A Dish Best Served Cold (The Man In Rage) -
Chapter 1192 The Light at the End of the Tunnel
Chen Lan was clearly trying to kill everyone in the Green Dragon Force.
"What a bunch of useless trash you are. I would have spared your lives if you'd stayed put in the military camp as you were told to. Instead, you spurned my gesture of mercy, disrespected my authority and even tried to mount an escape. You've betrayed me and nearly humiliated me with your betrayal."
Chen Lan cared deeply for his reputation. Wu Yang would have blamed him for negligence if the Green Dragon Force had deserted the military while under his charge. He would have been made the laughing stock of the military force.
They would mock him for his incompetency and his failure to control and discipline his men.
That had been why Chen Lan had been so furious when he had found out that the Green Dragon Force had attempted to break out of the military camp.
He had led thousands of men to corner Ye Yu-Yan and her teammates, launched a merciless attack against the Green Dragon Force and had nearly killed them.
"There's one thing that I cannot bear the most and it's betrayal. But I know you're young and foolish, and I'm willing to give you another chance. Get on your knees and address me respectfully as your commander and instructor. Swear your undying loyalty and obedience to me and that you'll forget your beloved Instructor Chu. Do that and I'll spare your lives."
Chen Lan's words were filled with ferocity.
A cold wind suddenly began to howl.
Leaves stirred on the ground while branches rustled uneasily.
Chen Lan's icy tone sent tremors rippling through everyone's bodies.
He expected these young soldiers to be cowed by his display of authority and submit to his will.
He did not expect Li Zi-Yang and his teammates to holler at him in fury. In the face of a thousand soldiers and stuck in a precarious situation, these young men and women continued to be defiant. "You old scoundrel, you're not worthy. We will never kneel to you!"
"You're not fit to be the Green Dragon Force's instructor."
"The Green Dragon Force only has one instructor and that's Instructor Chu."
"Do what you want with us! You can kill us if you want to!"
"But you best be prepared. Instructor Chu's going to avenge us!"
"When he returns, he's not going to let any one of you off easily! He'll avenge our deaths!"
The members of the Green Dragon Force lay helplessly on the ground and in their own blood. They appeared to be hovering on the edge of death.
Yet, they were stubborn to the end as they growled in anger and refused to submit to their enemy.
They would rather die than betray Instructor Chu.
"I see how it is. You've got guts, but that's not going to save you from my fists."
Chen Lan had not expected them to be so obstinate.
Despite the predicament that the Green Dragon Force was in, its members continued to hurl curses at him and show their defiance openly.
In a fit of fury, Chen Lan charged at Li Zi-Yang and the others, ready to unleash another series of attack on the Green Dragon Force.
"I would have let you all live if you had shown remorse for what you've done and repented. It's a pity that you're all stubborn, blind fools. There's no point in letting fools live. I'm going to do my duty as the chief instructor of the Jiangdong military camp and serve you the punishment that you deserve!"
His voice boomed like thunder and reverberated in the air.
Fury had twisted Chen Lan's features and lit his eyes in a cold fire.
Everyone watched as he took a huge bound and soared into the air.
He curled his fingers inwards and drove his clawed hands towards his enemy's throat as he dived down.
There was no doubt that when the hit landed, someone's head was going to be severed from their spine. Death was imminent.
Yet the members of the Green Dragon Force appeared fearless in the face of impending death.
They did not regret their actions, nor did they regret declaring their undying loyalty to Ye Fan, their one and only instructor.
They had but one regret, and it was that they could not see Instructor Chu one last time before they were killed and that they couldn't thank him for what he had taught and given them.
"So long, ants," laughed Chen Lan evilly.
The gust of wind that rushed towards the Green Dragon Force was akin to the sharp claws of death himself.
Was this what one felt before he or she died?
Ye Yu-Yan and her teammates' eyes fell shut in despair as they awaited Chen Lan's fatal blow and for his claws to rip through their bodies.
In the dark, no one saw the tears glistening in the corner of their eyes.
Were they truly unafraid of death?
Of course not.
They were in the prime of their youth. Their lives had barely begun and they had not yet realized their dreams. But their lives were going to end now. Inconsolable sorrow swelled within them.
"Farewell, Fan."
The last thought that remained in their mind was that of a young and slim man.
Chen Lan's claws approached them steadily.
It was then that a sudden wind began to howl.
A voice filled with power thundered in the night and reverberated in the forest.
"Invoke the Celestial Cloud! Cloud Sun Kick!"
A shadow darted across the night sky like a bolt of lightning, slicing through darkness and appearing out of nowhere.
The new arrival hovered in mid-air momentarily before thrusting his foot downward.
The weight of his foot was akin to that of a mountain as it landed squarely on Chen Lan.
Chen Lan clenched his jaw and tried to retaliate. Fierce winds lashed at his clothes wildly.
Just as he thought that he had successfully countered the attack and that danger had passed, he was faced with a second attack.
"Invoke the Celestial Cloud! Mountain Breaking Landslide!"
The winds lashed out and sent sand and fallen leaves into a flurried dance.
The punch appeared to carry within it the power of the entire universe as it landed on Chen Lan.
"What on earth?!"
Chen Lan's pupils contracted in alarm while his eyes widened when the immense force of the attack hit him.
The punch flung him away like a puppet cut of its strings and sent him staggering numerous steps backwards when he finally landed on the ground.
He smashed into the wall, denting concrete and metal and destroying a dozen meters of what should have been an impenetrable wall.
A tremor coursed through Chen Lan's body as the bittersweetness of iron filled his mouth. He nearly spat out a mouthful of blood.
"This...this is..."
Everything had happened too quickly.
A moment ago, Chen Lan had been towering over his fallen enemies triumphantly and mocking their defeat. Yet, the next moment, the tables had been turned. The formidable and seemingly invincible instructor had been flung away like a wild dog hit by a hunter.
The tides had turned against Chen Lan and his men.
The sight of what had just unfolded sent all of them into a stunned stupor.
Silence descended.
