A Dish Best Served Cold (The Man In Rage) -
Chapter 691 Ye Family Dinner
But of course, Ye Yu-Yan's dislike and disdain for Ye Fan was just one part of the problem.
The other part had something to do with Ye Fan's plump little friend.
At that time, Ye Yu-Yan wasn't just a favorite among the adults, but also among her peers. Many boys saw Ye Yu-Yan as their goddess and they all hoped that Ye Yu-Yan could become their girlfriend. The plump boy was also one of them.
As a friend, Ye Fan helped him to pass a love letter to Ye Yu-Yan.
Ye Tian ended up finding out about it.
Everyone in the house thought that Ye Fan had written that love letter to Ye Yu-Yan. Ye Fan denied it and said that this letter was from the plump boy.
In the end, Ye Tian went to question the plump boy.
But after seeing how fierce Ye Tian looked, the plump boy immediately chickened out and refused to admit to it.
And so Ye Fan ended up taking the blame for this.
And till now, Ye Yu-Yan and the family still thought that Ye Fan was the one who wrote that love letter.
After that, Ye Yu-Yan was even more repulsed by Ye Fan.
For someone as precocious as herself to have someone like Ye Fan as her admirer, it was both ridiculous and a total insult.
Later on, Ye Yu-Yan got into the best military school in the country and joined the army. Her distance from Ye Fan became even greater than before and so their relationship became more and more distant. She probably might not even remember Ye Fan anymore.
But Ye Fan didn't care about that.
Women like Ye Yu-Yan, Lu Hong, Su Qian were just unimportant people who happened to pass by him in life.
So what if they respected him? And so what if they despised him?
They were just like passersby to him, so Ye Fan couldn't be bothered with them.
But Ye Xi-Mei didn't think the same way. Her son had finally come back for the new year, so she hoped that he could at least have a nice place to sleep at night.
"Tell you what, after dinner, I'll buy some fruits and milk for your gramps and uncles, then get a nice fish for your Uncle Tian. Your cousin came back with so many presents, so even though we're not well off, we shouldn't go empty handed either."
Ye Xi-Mei was better at these interpersonal relationships compared to Ye Fan.
In the evening, Ye Fan and his mother came carrying gifts for his grandparents and two uncles.
But to their surprise, his grandparents and Ye Ya weren't home.
"They're probably all at Tian's house," guessed Ye Xi-Mei.
Ye Xi-Mei and Ye Fan went over to Ye Tian's place.
They could hear the chatter and laughter coming from inside the moment they walked past the gate.
Ye Fan pushed the door open to find that the entire family was here.
His grandfather, his two uncles and his aunt, Ye Xi-Lan were all here.
There were more than ten of them sitting around a large round table and enjoying a steamboat dinner together. They were chatting and laughing merrily and noisily.
The table was huge, but there was no space reserved for Ye Fan and his mother.
It was as if the two of them weren't from this family.
When he saw this, Ye Fan frowned.
Ye Xi-Mei's expression paled a little and she felt a strange disappointment in her heart.
"Sis, you're here! Have you eaten? Do you want to take a seat? Yu-Yan is back and Dad and Mum are so happy about it, so they came over," said Ye Tian's wife, Dong Mei, with a smile when she spotted Ye Xi-Mei.
"It's alright, we've already eaten. Mei, it's fine, you go ahead and eat. We're here because Yu-Yan is back, so we thought we should pop by as well. Yu-Yan is a really bright child and she's always done well since she was a young child," said Ye Xi-Mei with a smile.
She had a favor to ask of them, so Ye Xi-Mei tried to be polite.
Ye Yu-Yan sat beside her grandfather and just glanced at Ye Xi-Mei without saying anything.
Her gaze fell on Ye Fan for a longer time instead.
"Dad, who's he? Why haven't I seen him before?" Ye Yu-Yan asked Ye Tian in a rather loud voice.
She was Ye Fan's younger cousin but she didn't even know her own cousin.
This wasn't just rude, but also an act of contempt.
It was clear that Ye Fan and his mother really had no place in this family.
Ye Xi-Mei's expression looked even more awkward than before.
But Ye Tian didn't seem to be bothered by any of this. He put some food into his daughter's bowl and flippantly replied, "That's Ye Fan, your Auntie Xi-Mei's son. Remember the little hooligan who had a crush on you and wrote you a love letter? That boy. He's married into his wife's family and has become a live-in son-in-law. He's disappeared for three years without a single word, but for some reason he's suddenly returned this year."
Ye Tian gave a brief explanation of Ye Fan as if he was telling her a joke.
"Oh, it's him." Ye Yu-Yan seemed to suddenly remember him and just responded very simply before going back to eating.
She ignored Ye Fan and didn't even bother greeting him.
In the end, it was Ye Fan's grandfather who bothered about Ye Fan. He waved him over and said, "Fan, when did you get back? Why didn't you tell me? I would have gone out to welcome you. You've left for three whole years and you didn't even give me a call. I've missed you so much. Come over here and have a drink with me."
The only other person in the entire family who was nice to Ye Fan besides his mother was his grandfather, Ye Guang-Kun.
"Grandpa, I've come back to see you, haven't I? How have you been? You must take good care of your health. When I have time, I'll take you to Yanjing to see Tiananmen Square!" Ye Fan walked over and spoke kindly to his grandfather.
Ye Guang-Kun nodded assuredly. "Fan, out of all the grandchildren of this household, I'm most worried about you. I know about your situation, but I'm old and I can't do anything to help you. But you cousins should mix around and get to know each other better, in the future you might be of help to one another. Yu-Yan is back today too, and all of you haven't seen each other in so long. Tell you what, you two should have a toast as fellow members of this family. Family is very important."
Ye Guang-Kun tried very hard to make these arrangements because he clearly hoped that Ye Fan and Ye Yu-Yan could become closer.
Then when Ye Yu-Yan became successful, she could help Ye Fan along.
But Ye Fan looked confused. "Yu-Yan?"
"Grandpa, who is this Yu-Yan? Why don't I remember? I have a cousin by that name?" asked Ye Fan loudly such that everyone at the table heard him.
The atmosphere instantly became awkward and the entire place fell silent.
Ye Xi-Mei's heart almost stopped and she started scolding her son in her heart for being stupid enough to say the wrong thing!
