A Life Debt Repaid novel (John and Cordy) -
Chapter 495
After Cordy arrived at Levine Mansion, a servant led her to Alan's study.
The entire residence appeared bleak, perhaps because of John Levine's arrest.
"Mr. Levine," she greeted the man when she saw him.
Alan studied her for a long while in silence, probably because he had mixed feelings about her.
They simply remained still and faced each other for a long while, until Alan suddenly sighed. "I didn't expect Johnny to go that far. He never resisted me, you know." Cordy remained silent, unsure how to respond.
In reality, she understood how Alan felt since he raised John himself. It was certainly unthinkable that a child who had been so obedient would go against his will.
But it was all water under the bridge now, and Alan could not change anything no matter how much of a tantrum he threw.
And for a man of his noble stature who had weathered many tribulations, he would never allow himself to lose control while people watched.
"I knew John loved you, but not that much," Alan said emotionally.
Alan had felt John's restrained aversion towards the engagement with Jessica, but he never resisted, or even said 'no'.
Alan presumed John to be rational, and would eventually accept the state of affairs.
It turned out that he overestimated John, and held out too much hope for the boy.
"I thought about making you pay for this," he said, staring icily at Cordy while she remained silent. "Even if our family is in the midst of a crisis, a sick lion could still hunt a cat-destroying you would be all too easy. However, I will give up for the sake of my grandson and great-grandson...but what happened will always stay in my mind. I won't ever be able to accept you!"
Cordy held his gaze in return, and slowly said, "I'm sorry."
Her apology was sincere-a lot of what happened concerned her, even if she had no say in it.
But from Alan's perspective, she remained the cause of the whole mess.
He naturally didn't accept it, and ignored everything she said.
Cordy didn't expect him to, since she just wanted to convey how she felt.
"John told me to leave Dicky in your care before he was arrested," he said, making himself very clear. "You should remember that our deal was that I would give you Dicky once John and Jessica's married."
Cordy blinked a little nervously, just as Alan continued, "Obviously, they're not getting married now. Although I didn't make it clear that the deal is off if the engagement falls through because of you, the fact is that you were responsible, so I have no intentions of giving you Dicky. Without Johnny, Dicky is the only one our family has left."
Cordy pursed her lips-so Alan had chosen Dicky as John's successor, just as John succeeded his father all those years ago.
She certainly had something to say about it, but decided against it.
