Barney looked over at Gabriel, who had been sitting staring morosely at his laptop all morning.

Barney had been making the tea himself all morning. It was a job that normally Gabriel took pride in doing.

“Want to talk about it, Gabriel?” Barney asked worriedly.

“Nothing to talk about, Barney.”

“You never know,” Barney replied, feeling even more worried.

“I think I’ve blown it,” Gabriel said. “And I don’t know why. I don’t know what I should have done. I don’t even know ...”

“I’ll buy you a sandwich and a pint at lunchtime, mate,” Barney offered, and Gabriel grunted in assent, but Barney took no consolation from it.
