Secret Wedding 217
Chapter 217 Max Breaks Into Kaleb's Home
When Isabel received Kaleb's call, Xander was still by her side.
To prevent any misunderstandings, Isabel immediately hung up without thinking twice.
"Who was it?" Xander glanced at her phone, his gaze darkening slightly.
"Oh, just a call from the telecommunication customer service hotline. They've been bugging me since yesterday about upgrading my plan. They must be trying to hit their targets at the end of the year," Isabel replied and shoved her phone into her pocket. Then, she swiftly changed the subject. "What do you want for dinner? I'll cook."
Xander's eyes lingered on her pocket, clearly not fully convinced.
"I'm serious! I'm not lying to you," Isabel declared, pulling out her phone to show him the call log.
Sure enough, the last call was from a customer service hotline just as she had said.
This wasn't the first time Isabel had dealt with this. Twice before, Kaleb's calls had caused major arguments between her and Xander.
To avoid a repeat, she had smartly saved Kaleb's name as a random customer service hotline number.
She silently patted herself on the back for her foresight.
Xander, finally satisfied, withdrew his suspicious gaze from her pocket.
"We'll eat out tonight. I've already reserved a place."
"Alright, I'll head upstairs to get ready," Isabel said.
Meanwhile, Kaleb stared blankly at his phone.
Why didn't she answer my call?
Does she hate me so much now that she wouldn't even answer my calls?
He exhaled a frustrated sigh, pressing his fingers against his temples.
For the longest time, Kaleb had assumed Isabel's indifference was just an act to play hard to get. But after everything that had happened recently, he felt her growing further and further away.
"Isabel truly has no feelings for me anymore?" he murmured to himself.
Just as the thought crossed his mind, a message from Isabel popped up.
His face lit up instantly.
He knew it she couldn't possibly feel anything for him.
Excitedly, he opened the message, only for his expression to freeze.
"Stop calling me! What if my husband gets the wrong idea? You're so annoying!"
Kaleb's eyes widened in disbelief.
His mind was completely blank for a solid minute before he snapped out of it and dialed her number again.
"Ugh, not again!" Isabel muttered, exasperated.
She had tried blocking Kaleb's number before, but he would use different numbers every time she blocked a number.
After a while, it just felt pointless, so she gave up.
"What do you want now?" she snapped impatiently.
"Isabel, tell me, what exactly happened between you and Eva earlier?" Kaleb demanded.
"So that's why you're calling? To stick up for Eva? Fine, I admit it. I pushed her a few times. But only because she deserved it! My friend's pregnant and her belly's already showing. After just a little argument, Eva tried to trip her. If I hadn't acted quickly, my friend could've lost her baby and her life. So yeah, Eva had it coming!"
Kaleb was stunned.
Eva attacked a pregnant woman?
Why hadn't Eva or Mom mentioned anything?
They'd told me Isabel had hit Eva, but conveniently left out the reason why.
Now it all made sense.
Eva was truly out of line!
And then there was the hospital incident, where Eva had tried to bribe a doctor to frame Isabel.
Kaleb's thoughts spiraled.
The staged blood-packet incident came to mind. This wasn't the first time Eva had done something like this.
As he reflected on past events, he thought about Isabel's
transformation. Back when she was still the sweet, kind person she used to be, countless accusations had been thrown her way-like the time
Laurel had fallen into the water.
If those incidents were anything like the recent hospital stunt, had I been wrong about Isabel all along? If so, it was no wonder she'd become who she was today.
She was pushed to the brink.
But...
I can't pin everything on Eva based on one incident. What if it really was an accident this time, and the other things had nothing to do with her? I can't risk falsely accusing Eva and breaking her heart. His thoughts tangled further, leaving him even more confused.
"Kal, I'm begging you, please open the door, will you?" Eva's voice sounded as pitiful as could be, softening Kaleb's heart.
After all, he chose Eva because of her kindness.
Kaleb stood up and opened the door.
The moment it cracked open, Eva threw herself into his arms.
"Kal, I was really wrong this time. Please forgive me. I can't live without you!" Eva cried her heart out pitifully as her tears soaked the front of Kaleb's shirt.
Laurel sighed and walked over.
"Kaleb, don't you think you should forgive Eva? She only came up with that ill-conceived plan because she was afraid you'd misunderstand her. Who hasn't made mistakes? Ske knows she was wrong. As a man, you should be more magnanimous and let this go. Holding onto her mistake like this will only make you look petty."
With one sobbing in his arms and the other pleading on the sidelines, Kaleb's heart gradually softened.
"Eva, let me ask you this. Did you lay a hand on a pregnant woman?" Kaleb's tone was stern.
To him, hurting a pregnant woman was unforgivable.
Eva shook her head vigorously and raised her hand as if taking an oath. "I swear, really didn't lay a hand on Yvette! It wasn't on purpose. My foot accidentally tripped her. Kal, even if Yvette wasn't pregnant, I still wouldn't have done such a thing to her."
Seeing how resolute she seemed, Kaleb had no choice but to believe her.
"Hmph!" Laurel snorted coldly.
"Yvette has an even nastier mouth than Isabel. She had it coming! She "
Before Laurel could finish her sentence, a man's voice rang out from outside, cutting her off mid-sentence.
"How dare you pick on my wife and child and say they had it coming? Your family truly lives up to Isabel's description-you guys are monsters!"
Who was that?
Who had barged in?
This was their private villa!
All three turned toward the doorway in unison.
Moments later, they saw a man kick one of the bodyguards aside with ease.
Max had his hands stuffed casually into his pockets while he strode into the villa.
"Who... who are you? How dare you trespass on private property? I'm calling the police right now!" Laurel yelled.
But before she could act, Kaleb's shocked voice rang out.
