Alpha Luke and His Unwilling Mate -
Chapter 36
~Luke~
I drove at jet speed to the venue, praying Nyla was unharmed. While most of my wounds from fighting the Skinwalkers were healing already, the deep gash running down my ribcage seemed to need a pack doctor.
A thick sense of foreboding lingered in the air as I reached my destination. Driving my car into the dry and deep sand, I slammed on the brakes when I couldn’t believe my eyes from afar. All my pack members seemed to be walking into the ocean like mindless zombies.
What the hell was happening?
I ran towards them in a frenzy and used my alpha command to stop them. It didn’t work.
A hauntingly sweet melody had seeped through the air, filling my every sense and demanding me to look at the source of the song.
Nyla…!
Was it really her?
Her face was still the same, and so was her upper body, which was now naked. A ripple of anger pulsed through me when I watched her bare herself to everyone.
The special look I thought she had only for me, it wasn’t for me after all. Her eyes were glowing golden as she lured scores of people into the water. Her beautiful wavy hair formed a subtle golden halo around the edges, drawing me towards her. Rex lost his mind when he saw the beauty of her gorgeous purple and blue tail.
My mate was a siren, in all its glory, and she was luring my entire pack to their devastation. Instead of protecting my folks, I found myself in awe at how gracefully she moved.
Rachel’s yelp broke the trance I was in. The woman I saw at Golden Dells was here. She looked somewhat familiar even that day, and now I knew who she was. Sparing her life was obviously a big mistake.
Rachy, my little ball of fire, was about to fall unconscious from b***d loss while my wolf burst from my body, gritting his teeth. My mate’s song still lingered on my mind as Rex snarled in outrage at the sight of my dad’s dead body.
I locked eyes with Nyla’s friend while she flashed a spiteful smirk at me, with the bloodied silver blade glinting in the moonlight.
Did she f*****g use that on Rachy?! Did Nyla really let this happen?
I suddenly felt weak. My mate was supposed to bring strength to me, not fight me. I had severed a dozen skinwalker heads with confidence, and yet, I was lost and my heart was in crushing pain right now.
Nyla’s friend fought with a vengeance and disarming her wasn’t easy. It took every ounce of my concentration to not look at Nyla. Missing several swipes of the silver blade and taking a few grazes now and then, I lunged forward.
Ryder was right. This woman was an extremely skilled fighter, effortlessly coiling her body away from my teeth. Adalyn’s mom had once said something about sirens possessing extraordinary strength and stamina every full moon night. That was an understatement.
No wonder Nyla could wipe out most of the Night Walker Pack just like that. Look at her now. A true enchantress.
She was holding the attention of hundreds with ease. All she did to get back the lost energy was to pass out till three in the afternoon, apparently. The fool I was!
Nyla’s friend seemed to be picking speed by the minute, throwing punch after punch. Rex was already tired and hurt by the skinwalker fight. He was beginning to stumble when dodging her moves.
I was going to lose my first fight ever! She grazed the dagger over the wound in my chest. Surprise rolled through the both of us when we heard Nyla talk.
“Maya, I can’t do this,” she said, looking at a woman who worked in the kitchens. “She gave me food when I was in the Omega Quarters. She was kind to me.”
“What the f**k, Nyla?” Maya flashed a panicked look at the warriors who were coming out of the trance.
“Don’t fight!” I commanded them. My chest tightened when I watched Nyla struggle.
“I can’t. There’s Ren, Livi, and the wet nurse. I can’t harm them. They are my people.” She took off the pendant around her neck and threw it into the water.
“Have you lost your mind?”
My mate ignored her friend and swam towards me, caressing my wounds with her eyes and bursting into tears when she saw Rachel’s unconscious wolf.
“Were you really shacking up with him all this while? When I saw you two k**s, I thought you were pretending to save your life.”
“He’s my mate. I love him. Stop hurting him!”
“Are you f*****g serious right now? Wyatt was your mate, and this a*****e killed him. His men killed Vance. I haven’t forgotten unlike you.”
“I haven’t forgotten either. But I think I have forgiven him without knowing. I’m at a lot more peace when I don’t hold such extreme grudges. The pain is easier to get through with him around.”
Rex and I were overjoyed to hear this. I could never undo the heartbreak I caused. I was worried my existence would only remind her about what I did.
Maya was baffled. Feeling betrayed, she lunged at Nyla with extreme rage.
Rex growled dangerously, losing all reasoning when he saw his mate under attack. His lengthened claw slashed at Maya’s ankle, setting her off balance. Darting forward, I pushed her to the ground and sank my teeth into her flesh.
“NO! Stop! Luke, no, no please!” Nyla flung herself at Rex, knocking him off of Maya.
Another loud growl erupted through the air as my beta and gamma were back. I had linked them to turn back and save Nyla when I was under attack by the Skinwalkers.
My best friend Connor gave me a death glare, ignoring that I was his alpha. His bones elongated and his claws were out as he changed into his wolf form.
He moved around in a half-circle, giving me a warning growl. Was he really challenging me? A beta challenging his alpha wasn’t just completely and utterly stupid. It was suicidal.
“Mate…” I heard Maya’s feeble voice while Connor’s eyes softened.
Nyla, who was crying her lungs out until then, squealed in joy and did a funny backflip in the water. She hugged her friend who was still on the ground and whimpering in pain.
“Mate!” Connor shifted back and took Maya in his arms while my possessive self couldn’t hold myself from pushing him away from Nyla.
“No man is allowed near my mate when she’s naked.”
Or half-naked and half fish.
