A couple of months had passed since I started my tutoring sessions. I had to admit it was a difficult journey, but the outcome will be worth it. The tutor, Maggie, was a young, and petite woman in her early 30s. She had mid-length blonde hair with light streaks of red and a fair composure. She was kind and didn't appear to be judging her too broadly.

She was also extremely smart, which is what I admired about her. However, I wondered what Marlon did to convince her to help me with my studies. I knew what he did to convince Sierra to help with my heart condition. I couldn't help but feel that sting of jealousy as I thought about his relationship with Sierra. I wondered if it was still going on and I also wondered if he was doing the same thing with Maggie.

It upset my stomach just thinking about it. My wolf stirred uncomfortably within me, and I had to position myself differently in the seat to contain her. I was trying not to think about such things while I studied. Sometimes the thoughts would just come to me at random, but for the most part, I tried hard to focus on my studies.

My studies would begin early in the morning, that way I could still do some of my duties at the rose garden and work alongside the maids. They were told that they aren't to ask me further questions about my relationship with Marlon and why I was suddenly receiving special treatment. They knew I was pregnant and facing a heart condition, but they all assumed I came here pregnant.

I wouldn't dare tell them it was Marlon's child.

The only one in the manor who knew was Alex. Possibly Bob if Alex already informed him. I wasn't sure. Since that day Marlon caught me in Bob's room, I haven't been able to help him cheat his way through his studies. I haven't seen much of him. My only assumption was that Marlon punished him to a point where he was almost afraid to approach me.

I see Alex from time to time and he's been keeping up his end of the deal at helping me attend school. However, I haven't been able to attend school. He's been providing me with books and materials from his school to help me study.

"Why would you help me?" I asked Maggie one morning; I was afraid of her answer, but I needed to know if it was because she was partaking in sexual intercourse with Marlon.

She looked surprised at my question.

"It's my job to help those who want to study," she answered casually.

"Yes, but it's against the king's treaty for a slave to gain an education. Why would you risk punishment, or death, to help me?" I asked her, eyeing her carefully.

She chuckled lightly; I felt my stomach turning into a knot.

"It's no longer against the treaty for slaves to gain an education if the noblemen the slaves work under allow for it," she answered.

I frowned.

That was the first time I heard of this, and I couldn't help but feel betrayed that Marlon hadn't mentioned that.

"Of course, if you are attending the college, it wouldn't count for anything. You couldn't earn a degree, but you could still study there," she continued.

"What do I need to do to attend?" I asked her in wonder.

"Ask your master," she answered, shrugging.

...

Later that same night, during another night of passion with Marlon, he seemed a bit more hesitant than usual at leaving. Typically, once he cleaned himself off, he would scurry out of the room and back into his room before anyone catches him with me. But for some reason, on this night, he seemed to be lingering a little longer.

He collapsed next to me after finishing inside of me; he was breathless, and his body was warm to the touch. I didn't mind him lying beside me; I oddly enough enjoyed his company. My inner wolf found his presence to be comforting and not at all threatening. Marlon kissed my bare shoulder gently and placed a hand on top of my stomach to feel for the baby. My stomach had grown much more since finding out that I was pregnant. Nowadays when Marlon and I have sex, it seems as though he's being more gentle and wary of the fact that I am carrying a child.

I couldn't help but wonder what it was he was thinking as he lay beside me.

"I have to ask you something," I heard myself saying, breaking through the silence of the room.

He sounded groggy, as though he was falling asleep, but he mumbled, "hmm?"

"Maggie had told me that it was no longer part of the treaty that slaves couldn't gain an education. As long as their masters allowed them to," I told him, hesitantly.

I felt him stirring uncomfortably as I spoke.

"Is that true?" I asked, looking over at him.

His features had hardened, and he was now staring up at the ceiling trying to figure out how to answer me.

"It is," he finally said after a breath of silence.

"Why keep that from me?" I asked him; I was trying hard to keep any signs of emotions out of my voice, but I could hear my tone wavering a little. "Why keep me in the manor?"

He was silent for a long while before answering.

"The world is cruel, Deonna. I didn't want you out there. Not as you are," Marlon answered softly.

This was the first time he's ever addressed me by my name, and I could feel my heart skipping a beat. Why was my wolf growing more excited the more he spoke? It didn't make any sense to me.

"Being pregnant with a heart condition is tough as it is. Imagine throwing school in a public area? Not everybody is as accepting, and I could only imagine how they would treat you." "Why do you care?" I found myself asking.

He was silent again as he stared at the ceiling; he was trying to search for the right words.

"You are carrying my child," he began. "I'm determined to make sure this baby gets delivered without any complications."

I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed in his answer; however, I was also a bit appreciative that he cared enough about this child to want to have it be born in a healthy and non-complicated manner. I still wasn't sure why it mattered to him though; it was true that the Roessler gene was strong, but with me being a dark-furred wolf, the chances are that this baby was going to come out dark-furred. Or at the very most the colors of a commoner.

This child would never be fit for a nobleman and wouldn't even qualify to become the sole heir of the Roessler estate. I also couldn't help but worry that Alex and Bob would try to do something to decrease the chances of this baby becoming the sole heir. "I would like to attend school," I told him.

I was relieved to hear that I sounded much more confident than I felt, but I wouldn't take my eyes off him. He appeared to be thinking a lot about it; assessing each situation as they came into his mind.

He looked over at me, frowning as he stared around my features.

"What do you need at school that you can't get here?" He asked me.

"Opportunities," I answered.

After a breath of silence, he finally answered.

"Alright, fine. You can attend school," he concluded.

I wanted to jump up and shout with glee; I have never actually looked forward to something in my life and at that moment, I was excited for the outcome of my future. He was allowing me to gain an education and allowing me a chance to live an actual life. This was the start of something completely new. I could put an end to slavery and set all those children in the slave far free.

I still had no idea why he cared so much about me and why any of this even mattered to him; part of me feared him turning against me at any moment. But another part of me trusted him. I hated that I trusted him because he was nothing but a racist light-furred pig. But for some reason, my wolf couldn't get enough of him.

She wanted him, which was making me want him in return.

"What is it that you'll study?" He asked.

I was surprised that he was still engaging in a conversation with me; I thought he would have left by now. Gazing at him, I had to think about it for a moment before answering.

I knew I loved philosophy and I also wanted to learn more about politics because that was the same field, he was in. I figured with the two combined, I could figure out a way to put an end to slavery altogether.

I could make a real difference.

"Philosophy and Politics," I answered.
