Chapter 73: Betrayals, truths and lies

Penelope

The note was quite strange and Ruth asked me not to tell anyone, that the warriors could not be trusted, and to find a way out of the house.

It all seemed very specific, and she had always been a very organized woman, so it seemed consistent to me.

But, for what? Would it be about Nate, about the pack?

The atmosphere in the pack was tense, and as the time approached, I didn't know how I was going to do it. And everything seemed to be going my way when Naomi approached me. "I have to go for a moment, Luna...."

"Is everything okay?"

"Yes, I promise I'll be able to explain in more detail soon. Just stay here and wait for Roger" she says nervously.

"Are we in danger?" I ask worriedly.

"Nothing is going to happen, I just don't like that Ruth isn't here....maybe our Alpha needed her somewhere else," she says nervously.

I don't like to hide things from her, but the reality is that she's been acting weird for a while now, and the fact that Andrew wasn't around seemed quite strange to me. When it was almost time, I felt nervous. Until I heard a noise.

"What the hell?" when I heard gunshots inside the house, I threw myself to the ground in panic.

I started crawling towards the back door, I didn't know who was attacking, but I imagined they were enemies. Attacking an Alpha's house, how did they get here?

Suddenly, the door opened wide and someone appeared, desperately looking for me.

"Roger!" I shouted.

"Penelope! Thanks to the goddess!" he said, holding my hand and standing protectively in front of me as soon as we left the house.

"What's this?" I asked, worried.

"I don't know...I was with Nate....and I saw masquerade warriors attacking here...where's Ruth?" he asks.

"I haven't seen her for a while," I say, and he looks uncomfortable, "Do you know who these people are?"

"I think... they are friends of my father's, old warriors, but they come armed. Let's go... this way!" he says, as we hide behind a wall.

"We have to get out of here, Penelope... it's not safe here. Nate won't answer, and I'm afraid the pack is taken," he says, handing me his jacket.

"This will divert your scent," he says, taking my hand as we walk down an alley between several houses.

We were walking back and forth, just looking for where to go, getting out of the pack was an option...but they would hunt me. Roger wouldn't tell me, but I knew...nowhere was really safe.

I thought about Ruth's message...there she told me to go to the pack house, and if what Roger said was true, if the pack was taken...that was the one place I really shouldn't go.

"Maybe we'd better turn back," I say, maybe take something to defend ourselves, or Nate would look for me there, but as we kept going... I saw that there was smoke in the distance, and even further away. "What...?"

"Nate's house and the one that used to be yours... they're looking for you," he said, scared.

I leaned against the wall of one of the houses shaking with fear, we kept hearing gunshots and how they were tearing apart house after house like it was nothing! Like it wasn't the Alpha's house!

No doubt Ruth thought something like this would happen, and she had planned for it to get me out and protect me, hence the message. But why didn't she tell Nate or Roger?

I was worried about not having my brothers or my father or Naomi here, maybe Nate needed people at the border.

"Get down!" Roger shouted suddenly, and I threw myself to the ground. The warriors had finally caught up with us, it looked like a rabid gang, they were older men, but they were more.

"Stay back, Penelope," Roger said to me as he fought three men at a time. Roger was big and looked quite strong. He fought vigorously, and the men now doubted if they could stand up to him. When one of them came at me, I started to crawl backward, the masked man grabbed my leg and I screamed.

"Come human, come nice and easy and nothing will happen to you," he says and I kicked him when suddenly Roger hit him, and now they were all dead or unconscious. Roger turns to me, tired but unhurt. "We have to get out now...or..." he says as we hear another voice.

"I don't think that's going to be possible..."

"Regina?" he says, and I feel her behind me, holding me. It can't be that woman again!

"I'm sorry brother... I need her," she says, emptying a gas canister into Roger's face, he weakens until he falls to his knees.

"No, Regina... don't do this...' he says before collapsing. I can't believe what's happening.

"Roger! No!" I scream as she pulls me, basically carrying me because she's certainly stronger than me.

"Bro...you were always being loyal to Nate, that's been your biggest problem."

"What did you do to him?" I ask in fear.

"Don't worry human... I didn't kill him, he's my brother, after all. But neither he nor anyone else will interfere with my plans. He'll just sleep for a while," she says.

"Let me go! Let me go!" I scream, trying to break free, but she covers my mouth and I lose consciousness.

When I wake up... the place I'm in... looks very familiar.

The pack house.

I had not been here for so many years, and I was just in an area I knew very well, the kitchen, where the omegas work, where I used to work.

"Finally you wake up..." Regina says, looking annoyed.

"What am I doing here?" I ask as she covers my mouth and drags me to another place, it seems to be some kind of hallway hidden between the rooms.

There was a window from which I could hear a commotion. Suddenly I get a good look at her face and see that she has the mark of a blow, it must have been very hard to haven't healed.

"Why did you bring me here, how long has it been?"

"A few hours, it's completely dark now, you're quite sleepy and lazy. These were the passages the Alphas used for spying years ago. My father taught me, no one ever knows, let alone you," she says dismissively, looking at me. "And I brought you here because I fulfilled what I told you, I wanted you to see the truth..." she says, and now I understand, I already suspected it.

"You are the one with the message... Where's Luna Ruth?" I ask hectically, and she signals me to keep my voice down.

"Yeah, it was me...my idea was to bring you here and finish you off...but I realized it wasn't going to be that easy," she says, grabbing my neck and squeezing over my mark.

"That fool Nate marked you! How could he be so stupid? Besides, I can feel the power of the moon on you," she says angrily, letting go of me.

She had other plans... and what's he going to do now? She brought me here and camouflaged my scent, surely she could slip into the pack house quietly and no one would suspect what she was up to.

"What do you want from me?" I ask as I hear more footsteps in the room, some shuffling and movement of people.

"I've only ever wanted one thing: to be Moonstone's Luna. Nate must have always been the man for me, I was always after him... his best friend's little sister. But he... he never saw me. And yet I still hoped he would choose me," she says. "And then he... found you" She looks at me with hatred, grabbing my face and squeezing hard.

"A mere human took away the man I wanted! My rightful place!" she says angrily as we hear voices.

Regina stops and looks into the small window... I hear Nate's voice, and I feel like everything inside me is vibrating.

"Alright...show time," Regina says and lifts me to look out the window.

I see the main hall, there is Nate and his father, along with Robert and some of the important Moonstone family. I hear Ruth screaming, I can't see her, but it sounds bad.

It seems to be a reunion and a celebration, as everything is set up beautifully. I see no one else, just them, our enemies, and rows of masked warriors. "What... what is this?" I ask.

"Just...look human," Regina whispers.

I hear them arguing as Nate looks dizzy, he looks beaten and his clothes are torn, I feel my heart racing.

"How dare you?" asks Nate, as he almost falls to his knees.

"A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, I thought you knew that, but obviously I was wrong," Alpha Ivan says.

"Even let your mate get hurt? That's what you mean? You're a monster," Nate yells as I hear sobs that I think are coming from Ruth.

"The pack comes first, son... before even a mate. But you're so enchanted you can't see that," he says.

"But we're here to fix that anyway..." Ivan says.

When I see someone else appear, I am completely petrified. She has blonde light hair and is very beautiful, a she-wolf no doubt. "What does this mean?" asks Nate.

"You know Erica... she will be your Luna," Alpha Ivan says, and I feel my heart being ripped out in one fell swoop.
