Alpha's One Night Bride -
Alpha’s One Night Bride – Chapter 63
Jess stood above Graham with the gun in her hand and the smoke from the fire reining from the gun. Her body was shaking as b***d poured from Graham’s head. She dropped the gun and looked over at Jonathan who was beaten badly and passed out from the pain.
Tears were flooding down the sides of her cheeks as she ran to his side to make sure he was breathing. She saw Naomi bending down near Graham and touching her light glowing fingers to the cufflink. She took the cufflink off his sleeve and carefully walked it over to Jess.
Her l*p was quivering as Naomi approached.
“Is he going to be okay?” Jess sobbed.
Naomi glanced him over quickly and nodded.
“Yes, he needs to get back to Sabrebite and see his pack doctor for recovery,” Naomi answered.
Jess sighed out relieved that her son was going to be okay.
“Is the war over?” Jess asked, between her tears.
Naomi shook her head.
“Graham started a revolution. There are still packs that are invading other packs in different parts of the county. Once Jonathan recovers, he can use the cufflink to take a deeper look into it and put a stop to it,” Naomi answered.
“He’s the Overseer…” Jess breathed as she stared down at her unconscious son.
This wasn’t something she ever wanted Jonathan to be exposed to. Being the Overseer is a huge responsibility and it comes with the dangers of being abused, ridiculed, and possibly killed by those who don’t understand his position. All she ever wanted to do was protect her son from this very thing and now it seems as though she’s not going to have a choice in the manner.
Either he becomes the Overseer, or the war will only worsen, and more wolves will die. Seeing her discouragement, Naomi approached Jess.
“It’s his destiny, Jess,” she told her gently. “It always has been. This has been planned for a long time by the gods. There’s no better Overseer than Jonathan; especially with his luna by his side. He will prove to be undefeated.” She paused for a moment to allow Jess to wrap her mind around things. “I know you want to protect him. But there are some things that you can’t protect him from.”
Jess knew that she was right. It was hard to admit it, but she knew.
“We need to get him back to Sabrebite,” Jess told her as she wiped the tears from her face with the back of her hand.
Jess allowed for her body to transition into its wolf’s form so they could travel much quicker. Naomi helped place, Jonathan, on Jess’s back, and then Jess took off out of Onyxfang and towards Sabrebite.
It didn’t take her long to get there; she moved quicker on her way back because Jonathan’s life depended on it.
The streets of Sabrebite were now abandoned because everybody was hiding in their homes. Jess was relieved that no deceased bodies were laying around the streets; at least none that she knew of.
She pushed open the doors to Beverly’s doctor’s office; it was dark with only a faint light coming from under her office door. Her receptionist must have gone home due to the explosions and the fear it probably brought her.
“Dr. Beverly?” As she carried Jonathan into the waiting room.
To Jess’s relief, Beverly opened her office door, and her mouth fell open when she saw beaten-up Jonathan on Jess’s back.
“Oh my god,” Beverly breathed as she motioned for Jess to bring Jonathan into the examination room. As they slid Jonathan onto the bed, he stirred in his unconscious state and g*****d out in pain. Jess returned to her human form; tears staining her cheek as Beverly began her examination on him. “It’s probably best if you waited out there,” Beverly said, pointing to the waiting room.
Jess knew that Beverly liked working alone and didn’t like too many distractions; especially when it was an emergency like this.
She nodded and joined Naomi in the waiting room. Naomi was sitting in a chair; she didn’t look nervous which was a good sign because Jess knew she could already see the outcome of everything.
“He’s going to be fine,” she confirmed as Jess sat beside her. “You should notify Arina though. She just woke up.”
Jess nearly springs to her feet upon hearing that news.
Arina was awake? That was amazing news!
“Arina?” Jess spoke through her mind, linking to Arina.
“Jess…” Arina breathed; her voice sounded distant and broken.
It was obvious that she’s been crying. She must have been so scared not knowing what’s been going on. It’s been hours since Arina, Erick, and Ronnie left to go home, and the bomb went off. Despite how broken Arina’s voice sounded, she was so relieved to be hearing her voice, to begin with.
“How are you feeling, sweetheart?” Jess asked; she was trying to maintain a motherly tone because she knew that’s what Arina was needing at that very moment.
It’s been a long time since Arina’s had a mother and Jess tries to be the closest thing to a mother as she could.
“How’s Jonathan?” Arina asked, ignoring Jess’s question.
Jess sighed; she knew Jonathan was going to be okay, based on what Naomi had said. But the state Jonathan was in currently still had Jess worried. She didn’t want to tell Arina everything that’s been going on and how Jonathan actually was due to not wanting to worry her. Especially considering she was pregnant.
However, Jess has been keeping secrets and withholding information from Jonathan and everyone else for years. The last thing everyone needed right now was more secrecy and information withholding. Jess owed it to everyone including herself, to be honest for once. She’s slowly starting to realize that you can’t protect everybody and sometimes the hard truth is the best.
“He’s going to be okay,” Jess told her softly. Arina was silent on the other end of the link as Jess continued. “He was injured pretty badly in the fight.”
“Did we win?” Arina asked; her voice was hardly audible as she tried to process the information Jess provided her.
“Not exactly,” Jess began slowly. “Graham is dead, but there’s a revolution brewing in different packs around the county that only Jonathan will be able to stop. That is, once he wakes up.”
“Where is he now?” Arina asked.
“Dr. Beverly’s office,” Jess answered. “She’s examining him now. I’m in the waiting room with Naomi.”
“I’m coming to see him,” Arina said without hesitation.
“No!” Jess told her quickly. “You need to rest. From my understanding, you just woke up. You were caught in an explosion. That can’t be easy.”
“I’m fine,” Arina said sharply. “The baby is fine as well. I’m with Ronnie and Erick. We will head there now.”
“Arina, please,” Jess nearly begged. “I would feel much better if you stayed home and rested. Jonathan is going to be okay. Naomi foresees him recovering. Once he wakes up, I will call you and update you.”
“I need to see him, Jess,” Arina argued back.
“He would absolutely kill me if anything happened to you. He would want you to stay home. Plus, it’s still dangerous out there. There’s a revolution. We don’t know if there are more outsiders lurking around, waiting for an opportunity to strike.”
She paused for a moment; she was thinking about something heavily. After a few moments of silence, Jess spoke again.
“Arina?”
“Rock wants my daughter,” Arina told her; her voice cracking as she began to cry through the link.
Jess had no idea what that meant; she knew Rock was up to no good and was acting sketchy about Arina’s pregnancy. But what did she mean by Rock wanted her child? What use would Rock gain by obtaining a baby?
“I don’t understand,” Jess said, trying to gather her thoughts.
“He’s in the illegal industry of s*x trafficking basically. A prostitution ring. He drugs women and forces them to have s*x with strangers around different packs. Once they get pregnant, they return to him. He cares for them in some kind of underground bunker in Ironclaw or something. Once they give birth they get released and he sells the baby to third world countries,” Arina explained; her tone was hallowed, and she sounded disgusted.
“He’s selling newborns?” Jess asked in a whisper. “I don’t understand how he’s pulling that off. Why has nobody come forward?”
“I’m not sure. He must have something on them that’s buying their silence,” Arina answered.
“He uses fear against them,” Naomi said from across the waiting room. “When you fear someone enough, you typically oblige to their wishes. He uses fear to gain their silence. The bunker is under the grounds of Ironclaw. Accessible by the Grey Howler station in the center of the town.”
Jess wasn’t feeling so good; she felt disgusted in knowing this information. She felt disgusted that Rock would stoop to such low levels and accomplish something so cynical.
How could Rock do something like that to his own daughter? If he was successfully doing this with strangers, then why would he need Arina’s daughter too?
“Why does he want you so badly?” Jess asked. “Why do all of this just to get your daughter?”
She was silent for a moment before answering.
“Because of her bloodline. She’s the daughter of the Overseer. The bloodline of a Davis proves to be valuable apparently.” She paused for a moment. “When I was unconscious I saw my mother. She informed me of all of this. Before she left, she told me to be wary of those in Silverside. Made me promise not to go back there for whatever reason.”
Jess frowned.
“Silverside?” Jess asked; she could feel her heart beating quickly against her chest at the name “Silverside.”
She knew of that town very well. She had washed it out of her memory from years ago, but she remembered it slightly and she remembered who exactly was in Silverside that Emlin would want Arina to avoid.
“Yes…” Arina answered, her voice trailing off.
“You’re sure it was actually your mother and not just a dream?” Jess asked; she was skeptical, but at the same time, the warning felt a little too real and the information Arina provided almost made too much sense.
“Very sure,” Arina answered. “There’s more to her story. But for right now, she just warned me against Silverside, and she warned me against Rock.” She paused again, trying to gather her own thoughts. “I just don’t understand why she would warn me against Silverside. I thought she liked it there and wanted to run away to be with Boris at one point. She wanted to leave me there at one point. But now I’m thinking there’s more to that story than what I was told.”
Jess stayed silent for a moment, weighing in all that information as Arina continued.
“I just don’t know…” Arina said softly. “But my main question right now is, how did Rock know about Jonathan being from the Davis bloodline?”
Realization struck Jess almost instantly. She has never breathed a word about being from the Davis bloodline to anybody, including Emlin. So, there was no actual way Rock would know for sure. But Arina had mentioned how Emlin wrote him a letter back when she was in Silverside and somehow Rock ended up with the letter.
Jess had suppressed another secret that was about to resurface, and she realized who exactly sent Rock that letter and who Arina needs to be wary of.
Nikini Conway.
