Matt's POV

The restaurant Ben chose was an upscale little place away from a main city. The entire building had been emptied out. Uriel warned us that Ben had armed people waiting around the area, but just outside their area of operation, I had stationed Warhammer Guard. "Matt, it's so nice to see you," Sonia said. "You should really come see your stepmother more."

If anyone wasn't making it out of this alive it was Ben, Sonia, and Wade.

I didn't respond to her, "Odd that you'd bring her."

"I wanted it to be clear."

It was a ruse. He was hoping to keep the gunfire down from our side because she was here.

"I figure the women can stay here and get acquainted," Ben nodded upstairs, "I've had our table set up upstairs."

I turned to Glenda and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

"Don't eat anything," I whispered, drawing back. I ushered her to her seat and pushed her up to the table before following Mordecai and Ben who were putting on airs about how close they were.

Wade glared at me with an almost haughty tilt to his lips. His face was still healing, but it wasn't from the injuries that I had left him with from his car accident.

Ben must have stomped him into the ground for Frost Melt and Skyfall.

It would serve him right.

When we got upstairs, Mordecai settled into a seat on my side of the table.

"I didn't think you were this hospitable, Ben! Every time I come to visit, I barely get a crust of bread."

It was a warning. He laughed, but the tension in his shoulders told me everything I needed to know.

I had been right to tell Glenda not to eat anything. It seemed like this spread was poisoned too.

I sat beside Mordecai as Ben and Wade settled on the other side of the table. There was another seat beside Ben that I was sure he meant for me to take. I saw it in the twitch of his eye that he was pissed I wasn't taking the hint.

"I don't tend to eat with people who mean me and mine harm," I said plainly, meeting Ben's gaze. "What are you offering and why should I listen?"

He bared his teeth, glaring at me, "I'm your father, you little shit. For everything I've done for you, you owe me. I'm not playing nice anymore, Matt."

"I don't negotiate with terrorists," I said and stood. "If that's all you had to say, we didn't need to come all the way here and inconvenience Uriel like this."

"Sit down, you little bastard. You're going to turn over everything to me if you want to leave here alive."

Mordecai stood, "You're crossing a line, Ben."

He sneered, "I thought you don't get involved in father-son disputes."

Mordecai's voice turned dark, "You do this, Ben. And it's all over."

Silence filled the air between us. I withdrew from the table. Something clicked in the air and smoke began to fill the room.

Mordecai shoved me to the ground as the table flipped. Ben growled and I heard a gun fire nearby.

"Bastard!"

"I got him!"

Pain cut through my shoulder and I felt Mordecai dart forward. He roared and his voice changed. I heard clothing rip and felt the air heat as the smoke stirred.

Wade's voice cried out. There was a vicious crunch and another set of gunshots. Glass shattered and I felt the air sweeping in, clearing the scene.

Wade gurgled. I heard something clatter to the ground, but I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move.

My whole life I knew that I was different. My wolf form was too large, too powerful. Lucas was too strong and too aware in some ways. My sense were always too alert. I had learned to control my temper in some ways, to direct it into my work as I needed, but the difference I felt had never faded.

Wade lay in a slowly growing pool of blood. His neck had been torn out and his body was still twitching, but that wasn't what had my heart racing.

In place of Mordecai was a black wolf broader than any natural wolf, taller and growling, prowling after Ben across the room as he dragged his body back. The gun I assumed he had tucked in his jacket was a few feet away.

The black wolf's fur was missing in places as if it had fallen or had been ripped out. Blood made patches of it shiny and wet.

Ben darted to his feet, grabbing another gun that had been hidden near the door and fired. Mordecai jumped between me and the gunshot. He stumbled as it went off and I heard Ben rushing down the stairs. Mordecai turned to me. His eyes glowed the same vicious blood red that mine did and my heart clenched.

"Are you hurt?" Mordecai asked.

I shuddered, feeling his voice at once in my mind and in the air. The raw power of it was familiar and pushing at Lucas. I wanted to shift. I felt it coming, but I held it back. "What-"

"Are you hurt, Matt?" He asked again, his voice stern.

"A little."

He looked back at Wade, "I should have torn his limbs off. We don't have a lot of time. If Ben makes it out of the building, there's no telling when we'll have another chance." "You... Your wolf..."

He chuckled, "Azrael, but that is a story for another time. Are you coming?"

I didn't have to answer. Lucas pushed through my control. I lost my human form in a smooth, even roll of power through me and faced Mordecai on all fours, feeling more at ease than I ever remembered being. Mordecai turned to the door, "Stay behind me."

I couldn't argue. I could barely speak, but when he started downstairs, I found myself following him as if I was always meant to and I didn't know how to feel about it even though I knew exactly what it meant. Glenda's POV

I sat across the table from Sonia Wallber. Alyssa was on edge and I couldn't blame her. There was something not quite right about her. She was dressed well. Every part of her seemed to be perfectly crafted to seem harmless and wealthy, but her eyes were crazed. "You're not going to eat anything?" She asked. I glanced at the food spread across the table. "I suppose I shouldn't expect Matt's plaything to have any manners when he is so rude."

I said nothing watching her pour her tea and sip.

"I've done my best to be a great mother to him, but he hasn't-"

Gunshots exploded upstairs. My heart lurched. Before I could get to my feet, Sonia flipped the table towards me. I dove aside from the table and avoided her as she jumped at me. "Stay still you little-Ah!"

I kicked her in the chest, forcing her to fall back. Her heel broke and sent her tumbling onto her back. I heard her head crack against the floor as a door slammed open.

Ben Wallber dashed and stumbled out of the door, turning back briefly to fire another shot before rushing left and turning, heading through another door. I stood and ran after him. My heart hammering.

There was no way I was going to let him escape. I heard the pounding of paws coming up behind me. A large black wolf, bigger than Matt's wolf form with glowing red eyes, came up beside me and rammed into a metal door as Ben closed it behind him. The scent of blood filled my nose and I saw the trail of it following him.

Matt rushed towards me and streaked past me, all grey fur and glowing red eyes just like the other wolf.

His shoulder was bleeding but he looked unharmed otherwise.

We went through the open door and into the sunlight.

"Kill him!" Ben's voice yelled.

The black wolf darted back pushing me and Matt back as they opened fire. Matt howled in fury and mourning. I heard the bullets landing and the thump of a body on the ground.

Then, Ben was laughing, "I told you you wouldn't make it out of here alive! Last chance, Matt or you'll end up just like Mordecai."
