Arielle's

POV

I walked into the conference room and I found Ethan locked in a deep conversation with a couple of stern-looking men who I hadn't seen around here often. I couldn't tell if they belong to our pack or if they were emissaries on a mission from a neighboring pack. As soon as Ethan sensed my presence, he signaled for me to take a seat before returning his attention to the men speaking in hushed tones but I could still sense the urgency laced in their voices.

Ethan wore a rather relaxed look on his face and if I didn't know him any better, it was only a facade to hide his true expressions. I didn't need to take two glances at him to know he wasn't pleased with whatever they were saying to him.

I focused my attention on the ceiling, counting the number of squares each row had while waiting for the meeting to be dismissed. It was uncouth to eavesdrop and rather than leave, I would rather keep myself occupied with something else. There would be no telling when next I would see Ethan and it was paramount that I discussed with him before the Van Tyson's arrived at our gate.

Half an hour later, the meeting was dismissed much to my relief. I watched on as they took turns in bowing toward Ethan before making their way out of the room, each of them giving me a brief nod much to my surprise.

"Hey," I turned my attention towards Ethan who had already gotten up from his chair and started towards the table adjacent to where he had previously been sitting.

"You seemed rather out of sorts while you were speaking earlier," I added as he remained mute, feeling slightly hurt that he hadn't bothered to acknowledge my voice at first. "What do they want?"

I dragged my unwilling legs forward as I made my way towards him. He was unusually quiet and it didn't sit right with me.

"They came to inform me of what I already knew before their arrival," Ethan poured himself a glass of whiskey as he turned to face me.

I stood a few feet away from him still trying to gauge his reaction to everything happening.

"And?" I hurriedly asked, eager to get to the bottom of the whole situation. "What were they here to tell you?"

"The Van Tyson's have arrived in our territory," He replied before pouring the whiskey down his throat. "And before their arrival, they sent a letter requesting to speak to the both of home right here in our home when morning came."

I nodded. It wasn't a secret that the Van Tyson's were coming any longer. Ever since we learned about the investigator they had hired to run a check on me, we'd been planning for their arrival since then. Surely that wasn't what had him so conflicted earlier, there was more to this than what he was letting on.

"That's not all there is, isn't it?" I started, sounding rather confident he was keeping a vital part of the discussion he just had from me.

"No, it's not. There's a lot more to it." He answered me after quite a long pause.

"Who were those people?" I covered the few steps between us and I was standing directly in front of him. "I haven't seen them before but they seemed to know who I was. Do they belong to our pack?"

"I like it when you include yourself amongst us, it's heartwarming to see how far you've come living here." Ethan offered me a smile but I wasn't buying any of it.

"I like it when you include yourself amongst us, it's heartwarming to see how far you've come living here." Ethan offered me a smile but I wasn't buying any of it.

I was used to his antics already. He often employed a distraction any time he was reluctant to discuss sensitive matters with me but I wasn't buying it this time. "Ethan..." I frowned, glaring at him.

He sighed and stepped away from me, making his way back to the bottle of whiskey on the table.

"They're members of the pack and the reason you haven't seen them around here is because the only time they come to the mansion is whenever there's a grave situation to tackle. Asides that, they keep their distance away from the rest of us." "What's going on then?" I crossed my arms across my chest and leaned against the table. "It's just like you said, they wouldn't be here if it wasn't under dire circumstances."

I watched on as Ethan repeated the same process as before, pouring the whiskey down his throat in one clean swoop.

"They see the presence of the Van Tyson's as a threat." He began.

"We're all aware of that," I nodded in agreement. "They can be very dangerous and we need to be careful about them."

He shook his head. "You don't understand. They wouldn't be here for something as basic as what you just said. When I said they saw their presence as a threat, I meant they regarded the Van Tyson's as threats that ought to be dealt with immediately." "We agreed to that, didn't we?" I furrowed my eyebrows at him. "I asked for you to let me handle this matter with you by my side, that was what we agreed on."

"They weren't particularly optimistic about your idea, Arielle." He answered, turning to stare me in the eye.

"And what about you? Are you in support or are you against me as well?" I challenged him, holding his gaze.

"You know I'll always stand by you no matter what but I couldn't help but think about the possibilities that their solution to our Van Tyson problem could offer us." "What could they possibly have said to deter you from our plans?" I asked, eager to hear this grand plan to solve our collective problem.

"They wanted to sign off a permit to assassinate the Van Tyson's triplets and their entourage. They were confident enough in their ability to get it done before dawn."

My eyes widened in shock as my knees buckled simultaneously. If they thought they would get away with executing the next Alphas of the Van Tyson pack, they were mistaken. This wasn't any rodeo, very few could match up against the sheer force they possess, and even fewer would come out successful.

I always liked to think that they were blessed by the moon goddess in all ramifications, they had everything going for them. Wealth, power, status, anything you could ever think of, they had in abundance.

My short stay living amongst them was long enough to reveal the sheer amount of wealth and vanity that they possessed. It was unheard of, they were the apex predators, never to be messed around with.

But I knew there would be consequences for their actions if they chose to proceed with this foolhardy plan of theirs. Xavier Van Tyson would render every man, woman, and child living in the entire state and its environs dead before he would be satisfied and I couldn't stand by and watch the m******e that would befall everyone here happen.

According to Loki, it had taken their father decades to build his ever-growing empire and he hadn't stopped seeking more wealth and fame. At the peak of his powers, he took the Van Tyson pack into battle against a union of smaller packs challenging his brute hold over their region.

The battle was a m******e, the Van Tyson's won with a landslide, and eyewitnesses had called it the most one-sided battle in the nation's history.

Using his sheer power, he had managed to take out every single one of his competitors or force them into total submission.

Ethan was Alpha of the strongest pack in the state but thinking of the Van Tyson's as insignificant was folly.

"Don't tell me you gave them your approval?" I spluttered, eventually managing to find my voice. "This is total madness."

"The idea seems rather alluring. It would take care of our problem and send a message to everyone out there not to mess with us." Ethan stated. "Don't tell me you believe they willingly came here without knowing there'd be every possibility that you would think of attacking them?" I scoffed.

"What if they never figured out that part?" He asked me. "It's just like you said, they're egotistical bastards. The last thing they'd care about is their safety."

"If you go ahead with this plan, you'll be putting everyone here at risk. Not just anyone affiliated with your pack, but everyone surrounding your pack as well. Xavier will take no prisoners and he will burn down everything in his path to get his revenge. Are you willing to risk it all for this?" I gestured around.

I took his hesitation for his answer. He was a proud man but his big ego wasn't going to solve this. If we were going to make a breakthrough, he had to trust me.

"I can't lose you."

His words serenaded my heart.

"We have a plan and we have to stick by it. Together, we'll take my revenge and we will live happily ever after."

I covered the distance between us and wrapped my arms around him.

"It'll be dawn down. What do you say we go to bed now and prepare ourselves for what is to come?" I suggest, my voice muffled against his chest.

"I'd love that."

He scooped me up in one clean sweep and I shrieked in surprise as we made our way out of the conference room and up the stairs.
