Bedmates Soulmates -
CHAPTER 139
the was barely keeping her head above water, taking multiple jobs to afford her father's medical treatment, with just enough money left over for her not to starve to death. When the tall, broad-shouldered, and most importantly, rich-looking stranger showed up in front of her, offering to take care of her father's medical bills, Kira jumped at the chance. She knew the deal sounded too good to be true, and it probably was.
But then she thought, what did she have to lose?
Did You Marry Me For Money?
Austyn's anger spiked.
His dark face put Kira on high alert.
'No, I'm not sad,' she quickly back-pedalled. 'It's not like it's my money. There's nothing to be sad about."
She'd meant it.
She never intended to keep the money, anyway.
She just retained the cheque as proof of Kayleigh's scheme.
It was actually a good thing that he tore it up.
Kira was at a loss for what to do with it.
Besides, a tiny part of her wasn't sure if she could withstand the temptation.
Austyn fastened his gaze on her face.
She claimed she wasn't sad, but her eyes said otherwise.
Which irritated him.
Did she think a hundred thousand dollars was all he was worth?
"Why did you take her cheque? he asked with an edge to his voice.
'She was pretty insistent,' Kira said.
Kayleigh had gone to Stamford University to find Kira.
Then she'd gotten her bodyguard to waylay Kira on Friday evening.
Kira wanted to put a stop to it, once and for all.
With the cheque as evidence, she could ask Austyn to talk to his mistress and tell Kayleigh to back off.
Before she could explain, Austyn asked, "Did you marry me for my money?"
He regretted it the moment the words left his mouth.
It was such a stupid thing to ask.
He knew he wasn't going to like the answer she gave.
Sure enough, Kira shrugged and said matter-of-factly, 'Of course I was for your money. Why else would I marry you?' It was not as if she had fallen for his charming personality. He was a complete stranger to her back then.
And, as handsome as he was, Kira was not the type to fall in love at first sight.
At that time, things like love and romance were the furthest things from her mind.
She was barely keeping her head above water, taking multiple jobs to afford her father's medical treatment, with just enough money left over for her not to starve to death.
When the tall, broad-shouldered, and most importantly, rich-looking stranger showed up in front of her, offering to take care of her father's medical bills, Kira jumped at the chance. She knew the deal sounded too good to be true, and it probably was.
But then she thought, what did she have to lose?
Her father's treatment couldn't wait.
So she gambled.
When Kai Scott, who introduced himself as Mr McCarthy's assistant, took her to apply for the marriage certificate, Kira was relieved.
So it wasn't a scam, and the McCarthy man was not a human trafficker.
Lost in thought, Kira didn't realise the study had gone quiet.
When she looked up and saw Austyn's face, she shuddered.
The tiger was awake now, and the tiger was mad.
door of the study was behind her and closed.
Kira tried to recall the distance from her position to the door and calculate the probability of her making it to safety before the man pounced.
Her experience of watching wildlife documentaries told her that the most important thing to do, to survive a tiger attack, was to remain calm and back away slowly.
