Jesse grabbed her right wrist gently, lifting her arm vertically.

He applied the Spaso technique.

Kira heard a gentle click

She blinked.

It wasn't as bad as she thought.

Sensing what she was thinking, Jesse said, 'Give it a few seconds.'

Pain started to radiate from her shoulder to the rest of her arm.

Kira sucked in several deep breaths.

She didn't want to cry, but she couldn't stop tears from rolling down her cheeks. Jesse offered her a tissue. 'If you go out like this, Austyn's going to think I bullied you."

Kira lay on the sofa and waited for the pain to subside.

Since the coffee table was out of commission, Jesse set down a tube of ointment on the arm of the sofa. 'Apply to your bruises, three times a day."

Kira didn't

Kira didn't hear him.

Jesse sighed.

He scribbled on a prescription pad, tore off the page and stuck it onto the tube of ointment.

Then he thought better of it and picked up the tube.

Before he left, he said, "I won't tell Austyn about the daredevil stunt you tried to pull just now. But I'm serious. Don't do it. A fall from this height is no joke, especially given your current condition.'

'If I don't run, I'll just be a prisoner in my own-no, in his home.'

Jesse's hand was already on the doorknob.

He whipped around. 'What? Austyn's keeping you locked up? Are you serious?"

Kira sat up.

The look of disbelief on the doctor's face galled her.

"You're his friend. Of course you'll take his side. You saw what he did to me at the hospital. There were guards outside my room twenty-four hours a day. I couldn't even set foot beyond the threshold. Tell me if that's not false imprisonment!' Kira was still furious about the past two days.

'Oh come on.' Jesse offered a placatory smile. "The guards were there to protect you, not to imprison you.'

'Miss Hewitt.' Jesse's face had taken a serious look. 'I'm not lying to you. I don't have a reason or a need to. And I'm not saying this just because I'm Austyn's friend. He assigned the guards to you to protect you against Liam Cane.' Kira stared at him, confused. 'But I never saw him after..."

Jesse shook his head. "You don't know the man. Liam Cane is a monster. He's capable of anything. Austyn was afraid he might sneak into the ward and hurt you. The guards were there to keep Liam out, not to keep you in." Kira opened her mouth, but she didn't know what to say.

The doctor seemed sincere.

Austyn was trying to protect her?

Why couldn't he have just told her?

Kira shook her head.

Even if his intentions were good, she still couldn't accept the way he just ran roughshod over her objections and kept her in the hospital.

Jesse heaved a sigh when he sensed she wasn't going to accept his explanation.

Maybe he should leave it to Austyn.

Kira was Austyn's wife.

It was Austyn's responsibility to clear up the misunderstanding.

He, Jesse Chase, was just a poor doctor who got dragged out of bed at night to do a thankless job.

As compensation, he decided to charge Austyn twice the market rate for a house call.

'I'll leave you to rest. Take care of your shoulder for the next couple of days. Stay away from strenuous activities."

Jesse closed the door.

He found Austyn in the study.

An ashtray on the table next to him was overflowing with cigarette butts.

Jesse knocked on the open door before walking inside.

'Her right shoulder's dislocated. I fixed it. She'll be fine."

Austyn just nodded.

Jesse patted his friend on the shoulder. 'I don't know what happened between you two, but I think I have a rough idea, seeing the state the bedroom is in. A word of advice, be gentler next time. Don't act like a barbarian. Your wife's such a sweet girl. Don't bully her like this.! Austyn didn't say anything.

Jesse helped himself to a cigarette from Austyn's pack and lit it up.

"You know, you could learn a thing or two from your assistant, Jesse said. 'Kai talks too much; you talk too little. But if you don't tell a certain someone all the nice little things you've done for her, she's never gonna know."

Jesse tried, but Kira appeared sceptical about what he said.

Austyn thought he was protecting Kira; Kira thought she was held prisoner..

This kind of misunderstanding and all the drama that ensued could have been avoided if the man had been just a tad more open.

Jesse blew out a smoke ring. "You're thirty years old, man. Time to grow up. I know you don't exactly have a lot of experience when it comes to romantic relationships. The last girlfriend you had was, what, seven years ago? You really need to learn how to treat right. That is, if you still want this marriage to work!

Jesse gave up when Austyn showed no response.

He rolled his eyes.

'Fine. Don't listen to me. I'm still single. Who am I to give you marital advice?

He placed the tube of ointment on the table. 'Apply this to her bruise, three times a day. It relleves pain and swelling. If the bruise won't go down after a week, come and see me.'

Jesse turned around.

The study was pin-drop quiet without his voice.

When Austyn whispered something, Jesse almost didn't hear him.

But he did, yet he couldn't believe what he heard.
