Bedmates Soulmates
CHAPTER 188

Don't Fall For His Sob Story

When she mentioned divorce, he did show emotion-rage, and she got a dislocated shoulder as a result.

Elsie squeezed Kira's hand affectionately. 'And it's all thanks to you, Young Madam. You brought Young Master back to life. You have no idea how grateful I am. Kira smiled politely.

She didn't know what to say.

The housekeeper left her to process the flurry of thoughts swirling around in her head.

Kira was stunned.

To her, Austyn had always seemed like such a formidable man who had everything under control.

She would never expect him to be a victim of such a cruel betrayal.

The worst part was, Deborah was dead.

If she were still alive, Austyn could put her out of his mind and move on with his life.

She would just be a woman he used to love but no longer did.

But Deborah died.

Elsie was vague on the details, but Kira suspected that Deborah's death happened not long after the affair.

Otherwise, Austyn would have had time to let his feelings for Deborah subside.

But he didn't.

Before he had time to fully process the anger at Deborah's betrayal, he was confronted with the grief of losing her.

Fate delivered a one-two punch to him.

Kira couldn't help but feel sorry for the man.

She imagined how she would feel if, after catching Gideon and Georgina in bed, she learned of Gideon's death the very next day. Anger, shock, pain, misery, confusion...

She wouldn't know how to cope with the hodgepodge of emotions.

All she knew was, the event would leave an indelible mark on her memory, just like Deborah's death did on Austyn's.

Kira realised with a start that she and Austyn had a lot more in common than she thought at first.

They both had a kinda-sorta sibling they didn't get along with.

They'd both been cheated on.

Kira's heart almost went out to Austyn.

But she checked herself.

She shouldn't feel sorry for the man.

Nor should she commiserate with him.

He had tormented her.

Kira touched her right arm.

The pain was a reminder of what he was capable of.

Don't Far For His Sob Story

He had been a victim, but he had also been a perpetrator.

Kira pinched her cheek.

'Don't fall for the sob story,' she reminded herself.

She was still going to divorce Austyn.

Whatever happened in his past wasn't going to change that.

Kai drove the Hummer in silence.

He knew he was still in Boss' black books for the way he screwed up at the hospital, so he'd been keeping his head down for the past couple of days. Austyn was in the backseat, eyes closed.

Kai could see the dark circles under Boss' eyes from the rearview mirror.

He wondered if Boss had stayed up all night.

Ten minutes later, Kai had no choice but to speak up-he had no idea where he was driving to.

'Boss, where are we going?"

'Cedarwood Mansion.'

'Are you sure?'

Kai had to double-check.

Boss had not been back to the family residence for years,

Kai couldn't recall the last time Boss talked to his father, the old Master McCarthy.

'Do I need to book you an appointment with an ENT doctor? You seem to have trouble hearing.

'No Boss, my hearing's fine. Sorry Boss, I'll shut up now."

Kai had more questions, but he zipped his lip.

He flicked the lever for the left turn signal.

The rest of the drive was completed in absolute silence.

Kai had to switch off the radio at Boss' order.

Austyn had not said a word till the car turned onto the driveway leading to Cedarwood Mansion:

Armed guards stopped the Hummer.

Austyn had not been back for so long that they no longer recognised his license plate.

Kai identified himself.

A guard took a look inside the Hummer and let them pass.

Another five minutes later, the Hummer stopped.

'Boss, we're here.'

Austyn opened his eyes and got out.

The assistant followed close on his heels.

They passed more armed guards on the front court.

The behemoth property sat on 110,000 square feet of land, with four teams of guards patrolling the perimeter round the clock.

Old employees of the mansion recognised the young master and nodded a greeting at him, surprised.

'Young Master Austyn! What a surprise!"

The front door opened.

A man bounded down the steps.

'Sebastian.' Austyn nodded at his father's majordomo. 'How have you been?!

Sebastian inclined his head respectfully. I've been well, Young Master. Thank you for your concern. This is indeed a pleasant surprise. Though I wish you had called ahead so I could have breakfast prepared for you." "It's fine. I'm not here for breakfast.' Austyn tilted his chin to the imperial staircase. 'He's upstairs?'

The majordomo, well-aware of the history between father and son, knew whom Austyn was referring to without asking.

He nodded. 'Master McCarthy is in the study."

"I'll head up then. Let's catch up some other time."

"Young Master.' Sebastian hesitated.

"Yes?

"Master McCarthy is engaged at the moment. He gave an order not to be disturbed, so..."

Sebastian offered an apologetic bow.

Austyn didn't speak

He just stared at Sebastian, who had his head lowered but could still feel the heat from the young master's glare.

Sebastian stepped aside silently.

Austyn went up the stairs..

Kai nodded at Sebastian and followed.

The majordomo sighed.

He was going to catch some flak for disobeying Master McCarthy's order.

But Young Master Austyn was a member of the family and a master to him.

He was just the hired help.

How could he stop Young Master Austyn?

The winding staircase led to the second floor.

high-ceilinged and decked out with rare paintings and animal-head wall mounts.
