Gideon could see it; he just didn't want to admit it.

Kira was just stating a fact, but Gideon heard the accusation in her voice.

It intensified the guilt already weighing heavily on his heart.

'I'm here now,' Gideon said, his voice solemn. 'I will take care of your father, and I'll take care of you, Kira. I can do it, and I want to do it.'

Kira opened her mouth, ready with a rejection.

He wasn't there when she needed him the most.

She didn't need him now.

Her father didn't need him now.

But her phone chose this moment to ring.

Kira fumbled for her Samsung and answered it without checking the caller ID.

'Hello? Who's this?"

Austyn scowled.

He checked his phone screen.

Did Kira just ask who he was?

'Your husband,' he said.
