Bedmates Soulmates -
CHAPTER 334
Should she p
ro and look for him?
And then there was Harlan
He seemed to have taken Kira's story to h
to heart.
Georgina was busy racking her brain, trying to come up with a way to
Harlan was standing far apart from her right now, obviously pissed.
a way for damage control, Georgina had to win him back.
Tarlan's family had deep pockets, deeper than the Vaughns'.
It hadn't been easy for Georgina to reel him in.
They were engaged now, but that was no guarantee that Harlan would ultimately marry her.
'Harlan,' Georgina held his hand, beseeching
He shook her off. 'What?"
Georgina bit her lower lip. 'Can we talk? Over here?"
Harlan followed her reluctantly.
Helen kept an eye on the couple, relieved to see Georgina making the effort to placate Harlan.
The financial backing from Harlan's family was crucial for Michael's company to survive.
Georgina might be spoiled, but she knew the right thing to do to help her family.
Unlike Helen's other daughter.
Thinking of this, Helen turned back to Kira
'Kira, can you be straight with me? What's your relationship with Mr McCarthy?"
Kira was following Austyn with her eyes, wondering what he had to say to Michael Vaughn.
She didn't hear what Helen said.
"What?"
Helen frowned
She thought Kira was giving her attitude.
The girl was getting cocky now that she had a man on her side.
Helen huffed. 'Kira, you can't pin all your hopes on a man like that. Can't you see that you're just a fling to Mr McCarthy?"

Ka moved back a step:
Helen's perfume was giving her a headache. "That's none of your business."
Helen was persistent 'Listen to me, Mr McCarthy comes from a prominent family, I know men like that They will only marry someone whose station matches theirs, someone from a rich and distinguished background. Not someone like you." Kira's face was story.
She was so used to hearing put-downs from her mother that they no longer shocked her.
Or hurt her.
"I know this sounds cruel, but someone has to tell you the truth,' Helen continued. "It's impossible for a man like him to marry a Like you. I've spent time with people in his circle. I know how they think."
She reached for Kira's hand. 'I'm sorry that I haven't paid much attention to you before, but you know I had my reasons. I promise change. I'm your mother. You know Lonly want the best for you.'
Kira shook off her mother's hand.
Helen gritted her teeth.
Why couldn't Kira be more obedient like Georgina?
She plunged ahead. "Here's a piece of advice. If you don't want to be abandoned by Mr McCarthy, you should try and get pregnant. It's best if you can give birth to a boy. He might lose interest in you, but he can't cast you aside if you have his child!! Kira felt bile rise in her throat..
She thought nothing Helen said could surprise her ever again.
She was wrong
Her mother's lack of scruples boggled her mind.
"You gave birth to Georgina as a way to marry into the Vaughn family. Now you're trying to teach me to follow in your footsteps?"
"It's for your own good."
'Don't you dare say it's for my own good! I don't need a lesson from a gold-digger!"
Helen was trembling with rage. 'Call me whatever you want. At least I got the life I wanted. If you don't listen to me, you're going to be left high and dry the day Mr McCarthy loses interest in you. You will have lost your looks, your youth, and you won't have a penny to your name. Is that the kind of life you want?"
Kira shook her head.
She and her mother had completely different value systems.
She was glad Helen gave up her custody during the divorce.
Otherwise, she might have grown into someone like Georgina.
She glanced at Helen, who was looking vexed.
"I choose to be with that man because I love him.' She pointed to Austyn in the distance. If the day comes and he falls for another woman, I'll leave him, I won't cling to him, and I won't wait for him to abandon me. I am my own person. I don't live and die by a man's affection. I refuse to spend my days living in fear of desertion."
Kira suddenly felt a smidgen of sympathy for her mother,
She realised that Helen was leading exactly the kind of life she just described.
Helen spent all her waking hours plotting and worrying, living in perpetual fear of the day her man would leave her.
Helen's lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but she never got the chance.
Austyn came back.
His glance alternated between the pale-faced Helen and his poker-faced wife.
Are you
okay?"
Kiranodded. I'm fine.
Let's go then."
ed to the spot.
Jae you done with Mr Vaughn?' Kira walked beside Austyn, leaving Helen to stand rooted t
'Yes'
"What did you talk about?
"Mr McCarthy! Helen raised her voice.
Austyn halted
He turned aroux 'Yes?"
Helen looked at Kira under the street lamp.
Her daughter had grown from a toddler into an adult, and she'd missed all the years in between
A twinge of guilt prompted her to call out after the man.
'Mr McCarthy, I hope you'll be nice to Kira. She's a good girl. Even if you don't love her, please don't do anything to hurt her. Kira whirled around.
She had not expected Helen to speak up for her.
Austyn held Kira's hand. 'I won't hurt her. I will be nice to her, not because of what you said, but because she's my wife' Then they left.
Georgina gaped at the couple wallding away.
'Mom, did you hear that?' She shook Helen's arm. "What did he say?!
Kira was the man's wife?
Not a mistress, a sugar baby, but a wife?
Impossible!
Helen was
s just as
as shocked.
She would not have believed it if Kira was the one who told her this, but the news came straight from the horse's mouth.
But how could it be?
How could such a man marry such a girl?
Austyn pulled up in front of a red light and used to opportunity to ask the girl who had been staring at him the whole way, "What? You got something to say? Kira nodded. "Yes."
'Go ahead."
'Just now...Was I hearing things? Did you really tell the Vaughns that I'm your wife?
"Yes, you were hearing things.'
'Really?" Kira tugged on her earlobe, as if trying to test her aural faculty.
T
'Dummy, Austyn muttered under his breath.
'Hey, I heard that!' Kira protested.
"That was a lest. Your hearing works just fine."
"Oh. Kira paused. 'Oh."
So she wasn't hearing things.
Austyn did say she was his wife.
He did announce that to the Vaughns.
Jura shook a fist at Austyn.
Couldn't he have just told her that?
Calling her dummy had been completely unnecessary.
'Stop staring at me.' Austyn tousled her hair. "Buckle up."
Kira fastened her seat belt, knowing how crazy Austyn could get when he was behind the wheel.
She pondered the implication of Austyn's revelation.
Kira was keen to keep their marriage under wraps because Austyn's status would draw loads of unwanted attention to her.
But she was unlikely to ever see the Vaughns again.
Even if she did, she doubted they'd have the guts to blab about Austyn's marital status.
Which meant it wasn't a big deal for them to know.
Kira dismissed the worry from her mind.
Which freed up her brain cells to process something else.
She narrowed her eyes. What did you say to the old man?'
1 Only Have Feelings For You
""Old man?"
"Michael Vaughn.'
He was at least a decade older than Helen
Austyn chuckled. 'Do you want t
to know?!
"Of course."
"Give me a kiss."
