Chapter 172 The Chains of Fate
Benson stood before the white door of the hospital room, his emotions heavy and complex.
Just moments ago, Bella had coldly pushed him out, leaving him unable to hide his embarrassment and disappointment.
His face revealed a hint of helplessness and frustration.
The entire hallway was eerily quiet, the smell of disinfectant lingering in the air, occasionally punctuated by the faint beeping of machines from nearby rooms, adding to the desolation.
William stood in a corner, witnessing everything.
As someone who had seen many accidents, he chose not to intervene but to silently observe.
His eyes were filled with complex emotions, his gaze fluctuating as it settled on Benson, as if struggling with some internal conflict.
The events of the previous night still lingered in his mind–a fire in the neighboring residential area caused by an elderly servant’s mistake, with smoke billowing everywhere.
The scene had been horrifying.
William had been dragged out of his warm bed in the middle of the night, braving the cold wind to help with the rescue.
Even though early summer nights weren’t too cold, the suddenness of the situation was unsettling.
Now, seeing Benson, William’s eyes held not only fatigue and helplessness but also a touch of sympathy and concern.
He understood his friend’s feelings, feelings that outsiders couldn’t
comprehend.
The two had shared many experiences and secrets, making their relationship
more complex.
“I understand you,” William finally broke the silence, his voice low and gentle.
He seemed to be trying to calm Benson’s emotions, to create a space where he could confide
Benson turned his head, his eyes filled with anger and resentment.
At that moment, he was on the verge of exploding. He hated anyone’s sympathy or understanding, especially when he felt so powerless.
“You don’t understand anything,” he retorted sharply, his tone filled with deep frustration and anger.
It was as if he was saying that no one in the world could ..uly understand his feelings.
This sharp response left William somewhat helpless. He sighed softly and chose a gentler approach instead of quickly retorting.
He understood the inner struggle and guilt that had haunted Benson for years.
After a moment of thought, he spoke again, his voice tinged with a mix of pity and understanding.
Trying to reach the depths of Benson’s heart, he said, “All these years, you’ve been blaming yourself, haven’t you?”
His words slowly seeped into Benson’s heart, trying to awaken the long–hidden softness within.
Hearing this, Benson’s expression became extremely complex.
His eyes narrowed slightly as if recalling those painful memories.
The internal struggle was evident in the changes in his facial expression.
At that moment, he seemed to be back in that suffocating past, continuously struggling in the depths of his memories.
Benson had been injured years ago, his eyes damaged, leaving him blind.
After his family settled down, he went abroad for surgery.
But neither Yvonne’s family nor Olivia’s family was spared.
He felt that it was because of him that Olivia’s family had fallen into such at tragedy.

When the fire broke out next door, he rushed in to save people as if trying to atone for past mistakes.
This somewhat helped William understand why Benson had treated Mary so well over the years, even allowing her to climb up using him.
Before knowing the reasons, William had only felt that Benson seemed. bewitched.
This time in St. George, Benson had almost exhausted all his resources investigating someone named Davis.
He had also learned that Olivia had not only been Benson’s first love but also someone who had truly brought warmth to his life.
“You used to be so polite and cultured. After your eyes ..ealed, you changed. Was it because of her?” William raised an eyebrow, leaning on the bench outside the hospital room, looking at his friend with a hint of curiosity.
Benson said nothing, his brows still furrowed, his eyes filled with endless pain and struggle.
“Although you followed your heart, it’s quite unfair to Yvonne, isn’t it? She is so innocent, isn’t she?” William continued, his tone carrying a hint of reproach and helplessness.
Benson remained silent, leaning against the wall for a long time before
speaking softly, “Having few romantic experiences doesn’t help either, does it? “His voice was filled with exhaustion and self–mockery.
Since he was sensible, he knew that his fate was predetermined… Because he stayed with his parents from a young age, groomed as the heir to the Taylor family…
He wouldn’t face the misfortunes of his elder brother nor be sent away like his second brother, free to choose his life.
So, his marriage was likely arranged; he never struggled, at least not before meeting “her.”
He maintained his chastity, waited until he was of age, took over the Taylor family, married a wife of equal social standing, and lived a peaceful, if unremarkable, life.
But the accident that year, that period of temporary blindness, were his rare happy days…
That person was like a ray of light shining into his “dull” predefined life.
However, looking back on the years that had passed, what remained in his heart was only that unforgettable gratitude.
He clearly liked Yvonne, liked her very much.
He didn’t want to lose her, but when making decisio he always disregarded her feelings.
He even thought of the unpleasant “intimacy” that afternoon. He was forcing her.
Was his approach to relationships the same as when he faced his favorite toys as a child, trying every way to get them?
William looked at Benson for a long time, sighing, “Your question is beyond my scope. I have had quite a few relationships, but I’ve never sought love. I only seek physical pleasure… So, I can’t give you any advice on that.”
“But my
Uggestion is, you should deal with Olivia’s matter first. Once it’s resolved, she won’t affect you anymore, and then you can start fresh with Yvonne, right?”
William spoke with a tone of hope and encouragement.
“And are you sure Olivia is the person you’re looking for?” William’s words carried a hint of doubt and curiosity.
“What do you mean?” Benson frowned slightly, a look of confusion flashing in his eyes.
“According to you, you two had a serious relationship. Why did she seem so unfamiliar when she saw you yesterday?”
William was puzzled. He remembered the critical situation last night when Olivia was protected by a servant as she came out. He was relieved to see her safe.
But that woman had merely glanced at him indifferently, as if they were strangers.

Benson was silent for a moment, a look of confusion flashing in his eyes. “It shouldn’t be,” he said, his tone uncertain and puzzled.
“Maybe you should find an opportunity to ask her directly, just to make sure,” William suggested, his eyes serious and concerned.
“Okay,” Benson agreed, a look of determination flash
in his eyes.
For some reason, Yvonne’s. words echoed in his mind, “Benson, is it possible that the person you’ve been looking for isn’t Olivia, but me?”
This sentence replayed in his mind like a movie, tightening his heart into a knot.
his jaw
He took a deep breath, walked back to the door of the hospital room, set, and pushed the door open, “Yvonne, why did you insist on marrying me back then?”
