“Why are you all looking at me like that? I only spoke the truth.

If she truly had it her way, she would have called Lucinda a slut there and then, right in front of Nathan.

Atticus growled in disapproval, his lips turned downward.

“We were in the middle of dinner.

Why would you even think to mention the matter?

Just shut up and eat!”

To her credit, Florrie had the good sense not to say anything further.

She had already achieved her purpose, anyway, and had successfully provoked Lucinda.

At least, that was what she thought.

ALL eyes darted back to Lucinda, who had continued eating in silence.

There was no trace of anger or embarrassment on her face, as though Florrie had said nothing just now.

Which was highly uncharacteristic of her.

She was never the type to swallow her rage.

Disconcerted by her lack of reaction, Nathan gingerly plucked a mushroom from a dish and made to place it into her plate.

“Here, this is nutritious, and it tastes good.

You should eat more of this.

”

Lucinda finally stopped eating.

She said nothing, simply turned to look at him.

Nathan knew that look very well.

It was a warning.

She was livid.

He was at a loss, though.

Lucinda was never one to dawdle with her retributions.

Nathan had no idea what she was thinking, but he knew he would suffer a great deal if he insisted that she ate the mushroom.

She hated mushrooms.

And so, he wisely pulled his hand back and dropped the morsel into his own plate.

Lucinda’s features softened, if only a little.

Atticus watched the entire exchange, his thoughts racing.

The meal was not a pleasant one, to say the least.

When Nathan put his cutlery down a few moments later, Atticus mustered a gentle smile and asked, “Did you like the food?”

“It wasn’t bad, but I’m full now.

Please enjoy the rest of your meal.

”

Atticus only followed suit, however.

“I am full as well.

I would like to look through some of my books in the study.

Can you wheel me there, since everyone is still eating?”

It was evident that he wanted to speak with Nathan in private.
