Blurred Lines 1: CHASE -
Chapter 12
~Sofia-
I busied myself studying Chase's schedule, plans, and his entire life all day. He's a busy man. One local news article labeled Chase Montiero as an unreachable, wild, and exotic s****l being Digging deeper into his life, he had been constantly caught on camera with different women, all models, and socialites in various events and locations. They all look amazing and beautiful on their own, but Chase... d*mn, he always looked his absolute best.
The pap*razzi pinned him as the heartless, bad-boy billionaire with no regard for women's feelings and only care about partying and screwing.
No doubt repairing Chase's image would be challenging.
Which is good. It will keep my mind busy.
I sighed, leaning back on this comfy gray leather chair. Pushing a little away from the table, I turned and faced the magnificent view of the sun dipping on the horizon. My office is at an angle where I have a view of the sunrise and sunset, a corner office meant for the big bosses, as Mich mentioned earlier.
Brazil is beautiful, with an entirely different feel from the suburbs of Boston, where I lived my entire life.
I traveled for work, but never for leisure. I'd like to explore new things, see the beauty of this country intimately and get out of my comfort zone.
I flinched when the phone rang. This office setting needs a lot of getting used to.
I cleared my throat, lifting the handheld phone to my ears. "Sofia Collins speaking."
"Sofia, Jessica Thompson is on line one."
"She is?" I squeaked. "Uhm, okay... Thanks, Mich.
"No worries. She sounds scary, though," Mich stated.
I laughed awkwardly. "I'm sorry. She's my best friend, and I've been avoiding her calls."
"Ah, that explains a lot."
The hidden meaning in her words made my brows furrow.
"Is your cell phone dead?!" Jessica's high-pitched voice greeted me. "My G*d, Sofia Collins! I've been calling you all morning!"
I giggled, which only irritated her more. "Oh, let's see if you can laugh at what I'm about to tell you."
I swiveled on my chair, facing the glass wall. "Oh yeah? What could possibly come as a surprise to me after I found out my fiance f*cked another girl and got her pregnant?" I pressed. "Your fiance coming to see you," Jessica sounded smug.
Crickets.
One.
Two.
Three.
"What?" I whispered, shocked.
Jessica huffed. I bet she's smirking wherever she is right now. "Yes, Sofia. If you didn't turn your phone off, you would have the time to move to the moon! Kyle is coming to see you."
I stood up and walked towards the glass wall. Why did the air suddenly turn heavier? I pressed my hand to my chest, calming my wild beating heart. "That's not possible, Jessica. How... How sure are you that he's going to see me? He doesn't even know where to find me."
"As if you don't know how persistent Kyle Andrews can be. He has connections."
I breathe, pinching the bridge of my nose. It felt like the walls were closing in on me. "Wait... Can
you tell me what happened? How did you know he was coming to see me?"
The coffee machine beeped in the background. Jessica must be in the office pantry. "He came in
This morning with Katerina." Jessica wheezed. "I was tempted to put poison in his coffee!"
I giggled, but my heart gained speed as she continued. "We talked about the wedding, the plans on how to hide Katerina's pregnancy until then, business as usual. Georgia was there too because she didn't trust that I could control myself. When Katerina excused herself and went to the lady's room, that's when Kyle asked us about you."
I don't know what to feel about this revelation.
"He did?"
"Yes. He asked us where you were. Of course, we didn't tell him sh*t. You'd be surprised how Georgia put him in his place, Soph." Jessica chortled. "Yeah?"
"She told him not to bother looking for you. To respect your decision in leaving a dipsh*t like him."
"She said that?" I laughed. In my time working for Georgia, I've never heard her utter such nasty words before. She was always prim and proper, especially in front of our clients; in this case, Kyle is her client.
"Yep. And your ex didn't appreciate what Georgia said. It was us against him. Good thing Katerina came back, or we'd be clawing his eyes out." Our laughter sailed into the line. "I think I found my new best friend. Georgia isn't so bad after all. And she truly cared for you."
"Aw..." I cooed, rolling my eyes. "I'm glad you two are working in harmony," I said, sarcasm dripping like honey from my mouth.
"Ha ha," Jessica retorted. "Anyway, just be ready because the Kyle I saw walking out of the office is different from the Kyle who walked in with Katerina. There was something different about him, Sofia. I have this gut feeling that he'd stay true to his words." "What exactly did he say?"
"Well, before Katerina saved the day, he told us not to bother planning anything because no wedding between him and Katerina was going to happen. He said there's only one woman he'd marry, and he will look for and bring you back to Boston." Those words left a pungent taste on my tongue. My throat tightened, and my internal o*gans were crowding one another.
As I ended the call with Jessica, chills spiraled down my spine. What if Kyle wasn't kidding? He's not someone who throws threats on a daily basis. Kyle Andrews is a man of his word. But would he really go to the lengths of searching for me? What if he figures out where I am? What would I do?
A knock on the door put a stop to my rambling thoughts.
"Hey, my girlfriend and I are going to her brother's bar," Mich said. "Would you like to join us?"
"Uhm, girlfriend?"
Mich's smile widened, her brown eyes gleaming with tenderness. "Yeah. That's the reason Boss, and I lasted this long. I'm immune to his charm."
I giggled. This day is truly eventful. "Sure. I hope your girlfriend would welcome a third wheel." I said, shoving all my belongings in my messenger bag.
"Oh, she's excited to meet you," Mich said as I closed the door. Locking it. "Her brother is single and hot." "Oh no," I cajoled, waiting for Mich to gather her things. "I knew this was a trap."
