Sofia~

Bearded Guy swiped his palm on his chest, gaze dropping on it. Blood coated his hand, his eyes narrowing down on me. "The f**k?"

Then, with the chaos of gunfire that pervaded the air, muffled voices in his radio swelled louder, tension wrapped in their tones like a vise. "Everyone back to the mansion," one voice screamed.

"The police are here!"

"Find Sofia!" I recognized Nikos' commanding voice. "We are not leaving without her."

"Proceed with the plan. Get the Don to safety."

Bearded Guy snapped out of his trance. Menace and anger dilated his eyes.

I gasped, seeing my life flash before me, but his face blew up before he could squeeze the trigger. Flesh and blood exploding like watermelon smashed with a hammer. My lips parted on a scream, but no sound came out as his body fell over me.

I lifted my hand too late. He had already fallen, trapping my good arm between us. I pushed him with everything I got, but I was so tired. Fatigue caught up with me, and my left shoulder had been dislocated from the fall. My side was also pulsing. Some sentences are incomplete if you are not reading this novel on FindNovel.net. My muscles screamed in agony; each move punctured an excruciating sting through my system. Bearded Guy's body weighed tons, like bricks pinning me down.

'Is this it?' I thought, staring at the sky through the gaps of the waving leaves. It was so blue, so peaceful and calm. Closing my eyes, I listened to the gunfire perfusing in the air. The police are here. I just hope the good ones find me before Nikos' men do. "Sofia!" Avery called. She kneeled on my side, and her bare knees met the ground. "Hang in there," she murmured, her blond hair framing her worry-filled face. She dropped her gun on the ground and pushed Bearded Guy's body off me. "Fucking dead weight!" she grunted, dragging the dead body away and kicking it a few times.

She clearly hated the guy. Her childish act made me smile.

Turning back to me, big doe eyes scanned my state, lips pursing. "Can you walk?"

I pushed off from the ground to a sitting position. Avery aided me until my back was resting on the huge log. Looking down at my lower body, I grimaced at the huge slit in my sweat; blood gushed from my left leg. Avery noticed it, too. She pulled a dagger from her ankle boots and shredded my sweatpants, creating a makeshift bandage, and binding it above my cut.

"It's just a scratch, but we have to stop the bleeding," she stated, making more strips from the sweatpants and wrapping it now over the cut. "What's going on?" I asked.

"The police are here," she murmured, cupping my face and tipping it side to side. She placed her forefinger in front of me, moving it from left to right like paramedics would. I followed her finger's movement, pinching my eyes shut when dizziness struck me. "You look like shit."

"Gee, thanks." I rolled my eyes, wincing when she lifted my left arm. "Avery!"

"Don't be such a baby," she rolled her eyes. "We need to put your shoulder back in place."

"I don't like the look on your face," I cajoled.

She gifted me with a small smile. "You're just jealous that I'm prettier than you."

I giggled, groaning when she clutched my wrist and pressed a palm on my shoulder.

"Ready?" I nodded. "On three..." I bit my lip and prepared myself for the pain. "One, two-"

"Ah!!!!" I screamed in pain; tears pricked my eyes. I had a feeling she would do that, but nothing prepared me for the excruciating pain of having my shoulder forced back to its place.

Rustling behind Avery caught my attention. My heart almost burst in my chest when I saw Chase emerge from the cluster of trees, his gun raised, eyes blazing with determination.

"Chase..." I whispered. Avery stiffened, and she grabbed her gun from the ground. Her movements were swift, but Chase had the advantage and shot Avery in her right arm. "No!"

Avery hissed, swinging around with her gun, and pointed it at Chase. Chase's steps didn't falter. His eyes were zeroed in on me. He was a man on a mission, ready to bulldoze anyone who stood his way.

"Chase, don't shoot. Avery is my friend!" recognition flickered in Chase's eyes. His gaze slid from me to Avery and the faceless dead body a few feet away from us.

He was still guarded as he neared me, pinning Avery with a feral warning and tucking his gun into his waistband.

Reaching me, he kneeled before me and cupped my face, his anger dwindling. That familiar softness in him pushed forward as he took in my state. His eyes traipse around my face, the bandage on my head, my shoulder, and the laceration on my leg. There was no doubt that I looked like a wreck, but he was here. He looked as beautiful as ever. Though dark bags circled his blue eyes, seeing him here made my heart ache. My eyes sting. My tears broke out like a broken dam. "Chase..."

"Sofia," Chase whispered, pawing the back of my head and pulling my face to his chest, his familiar scent engulfing me. This was real; I wasn't dreaming. Chase was really here, and I was in his embrace. I clutched his shirt with my good hand, sobbing and sniffing. Everything came crashing on me like rushing waves on the shore.

"How... how are you here?" I tipped my face up, skimming his face with my dirty hands.

His eyes fluttered shut, shoulders lifting and falling on a heavy sigh as he leaned on my touch.

"Alice is here with me." His gaze fell on Avery. She quietly tended to the wound on her arm. It was a flesh wound. She used the excess fabric of my sweatpants and dressed it around her arm, using her teeth to secure the knot.

"She worked for Nikos, but she helped me escape," I explained.

Chase looked thoughtful, assessing the situation. "Thank you. But you have to leave now. The police will be here soon." Avery's eyes flickered to mine. "They got the Don?"

"Don?" Chase echoed. Avery's lips pursed, face turning serious. They had An unspoken understanding, and Chase was the first to break eye contact. "I don't know. But this place is surrounded by the police. Do you know about the tunnels under the mansion?" Avery nodded. "One of those tunnels leads to the coast. The police have no idea those tunnels exist. You have a few hours' advantage before they start clearing the mansion."

She gnawed at her lower lip. "Thanks." Scrambling to her feet, I reached for her hand before she could run.

"Avery..."

A warm smile tipped her lips. "I'll see you around, Sofia."
