~Sofia~

"Kyle." My hand, holding the towel, paused in patting my hair dry. "What... What are you doing here?" I swallowed hard and stood straight, holding my ground against this six-foot-one intimidating wall of muscle in front of me. He changed physically. His hair was longer, tied in a low ponytail, and he was much bigger than before. It's as if he's been spending a lot of time in the gym.

"I heard you're back," he murmured, eyes gliding over my face, lifting a bouquet of red roses between us.

"I wonder where you heard that," I said, reaching for the flowers out of courtesy.

He offered me a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He looked so sad. The warmth in his blue eyes was gone. They seemed distant, and the frown lines on his face had deepened.

He doesn't say anything for a while. I'm not sure how to take his silence, but I don't feel hostile toward him anymore.

It's not only him that changed. Something inside me changed, too. Yes, I was surprised to see him at my doorstep, but the ache in my chest wasn't there anymore.

"Homecoming present." He gestured at the flowers. "If I had known you were coming home, I would've fetched you at the airport myself."

I released a quiet breath. "Kyle-"

He cut me off with a shake of his head. "You and Montiero are over."

I paused. "Were you keeping tabs on me?"

He nodded, confirming my question. "I knew he'd break your heart, Sofia. I know his type."

What a surprise.

Kyle had the resources, money, and connection to do such a thing.

Draping the towel over my shoulder, I sniffed the roses. "Of course you do. You two have a lot more in common than you think, yeah? Oh, wait. You were much worse. Because we were actually together while Chase and I were merely fooling around." It was irrational to feel defensive about Kyle attacking Chase. Both of them hurt me on some level, one more, than the other. But I feel protective of Chase.

There's no insult he can throw at Chase that I cannot hurl back at him. Besides, it was me who couldn't keep my feelings at bay. Chase didn't promise me anything. He didn't put a ring on my finger and get another girl pregnant.

I paused. Realization dawned on me. Between them, one had a stronghold in the broken pieces of my heart, or what was left of it.

There must be something really wrong with me.

If my words affected Kyle, he doesn't show it. "Now that you're here, I will do everything to win you back, Sofia." He pretended as if he didn't hear a thing I said. "You were off limits in Rio, but now you are on my turf. He can't fucking control me anymore." My brows furrowed. "What the hell are you talking about?"

The elevator dinged open. Jessica stepped out of the lift, Chinese takeouts at hand. She paused, brown eyes narrowing when she saw Kyle. She continued walking. A woman on a mission.

"What are you doing here?" She glared at Kyle for a second longer and turned to me. "And you, why are you talking to him in your robe?"

Jessica's animosity made my heart swell. Due to their height difference, it's like David was taunting Goliath. I glanced up at Kyle. "He was just leaving."

Kyle's brows knotted, and he clenched his jaw. He stepped forward, removing the distance between us. Tall and broad, casting a shadow as he loomed over me. Jessica looked like a lioness, ready to protect me at the first sign of danger. A six-foot-one danger. "Kyle-" Jessica hissed.

He didn't mind her and reached for my chin, tipping my face up. "I'm not here to hurt you, Sofia," he murmured, dark-lashed gaze softening. His touch used to ignite thousands of matches beneath my skin. Now, nothing. The butterflies aren't there anymore. Not even a sizzle.

He skimmed my lips with his thumb. "I'm here to get my girl back, and trust me, I will win you back." Saying his piece, he turned and headed for the elevator. "One day," she raised her forefinger for emphasis. "You were here one day, Sofia. And he's already threatening to make life difficult for you again."

I giggled, stepping aside to let her in. She rolled her eyes and headed straight to the kitchen. I followed her and reached for a flower vase in the cupboard, filling it with water.

"You're keeping the roses?" She asked, lining up the boxes of takeouts on the counter.

"They did me no harm, Jessica," I said defensively, arranging the roses and setting them on the counter. "Besides, Kyle can do whatever he wants, but I'm not going back to him. He's fighting a losing battle."

Jessica paused and blinked at me as if she had caught something in her eyes. "Because of Chase?"

I hummed a yes. "Let me get dressed, and I'll tell you everything."

Empty boxes of takeouts littered the coffee table. Jessica sat crossed leg on the couch while I stretched my legs wide on the carpet.

Jessica passed me the ice cream pint, sticking the spoonful of the sweet treat inside her mouth. "Letty?" I barely understood what she murmured. She swallowed and pointed the spoon at me. "But the police ruled her death as an accident."

I nodded, the chocolate ice cream melting inside my mouth. "Derek said Chase had a hand in her death, but I know Chase wouldn't do that. I don't believe he could ever hurt Letty."

"Why didn't you hear him out?" Jessica groaned, tipping her head back onto the backrest of the couch.

"I told you my reasons. Chase needed to free himself of whatever guilt he pointed at himself. He and Derek need to deal with their demons."

She blows out an exasperated breath. "I won't be able to sleep, Sofia. Letty? What could've happened to her? Why would Chase let Derek think he killed Letty?"

I sighed. "Do you believe Chase could do what Derek thinks he did?"

She shook her head. "They were brothers. Chase might be a fuck boy, but he could never hurt Derek like that. Besides, is Letty cheating on Derek? They were end game." She had dreamy eyes. "I used to dream of love like that. The way they looked at each other..." she sighed and pinned me with a threatening gaze. "You will tell me everything once Chase is ready to talk to you, right?"

I nodded. "I just hope it doesn't take him that long."

Jessica sighed. "Let's hope it won't take him another ten years,"
