~Sofia~

Jessica's three-minute rant finally ended. Certain she had already voiced her anger, I pressed the phone back to my ears without checking if she was still on the line. My face contorted when my phone rang. A request for a video call

Answering the call, Jessica's wicked laugh coasted through the air. I glared at her face, the crinkles in her eyes told me I was already forgiven for bailing out on her without a word. "B*tch," I mumbled under my breath.

Her laughter died down. "Traitor."

I glared at her. She glared back.

"I love you," I said.

She snorted, falling into a fit of laughter. I laughed with her, and just like that, her anger wilted away. "Sorry for leaving without a word." I rolled onto my back, holding the phone up. Jessica shook her head. "I get it."

"You do?" 1 turned onto my stomach, pressing my chin on my folded arm.

She hummed, stepping away from her cell phone. She was in her kitchen, dressed in a fitted top and yoga pants. Her blond hair was pulled up in a messy bun. With her back on me, the gentle purr of the juicer echoed from her end. She returned with a glass of green smoothie, her secret recipe.

Jessica and I went to the same school since elementary, but we only got together in our sophomore year. It was at a school dance. Someone accidentally spilled grape juice on my white dress. I went into the bathroom and found Jessica there. She offered to help remove the stain with a wet cloth, which spread the purple further. To say the dress didn't see the light of day again would be an understatement, but I found my best friend that night.

I refused to go back out into the dance and shame myself. Jessica stayed with me in the bathroom, locked the door, and magically pulled a joint from her bag. It was my first time trying that sh*t, but it was also hers. She stole it from her cousin, and to kill time, we both experimented on it and said, 'never again. "Georgia told you?" Although Georgia promised not to tell anyone, I wouldn't hold it against her if Jessica squeezed the information out of her. Jessica can be really persistent when she wants to be. Jessica's eyes narrowed to slits. "Georgia knew? I am your best friend; she is the evil witch, and you told her?"

"Sh*t," I murmured under my breath.

I love Jessica, but she is such a jealous pr*ck, even on small things like gossip about my life. She wants to know everything first. I should've remembered that and kept my mouth shut.

She set the glass on the counter, the thick green liquid swirling inside. Parking her hands on her hips, she paced the kitchen, breathing like a dragon ready to burn everything in her path. "I can't believe this. We've been best friends for what, ten, eleven years? And you chose Georgia over me?"

I sighed and sat crossed legs on the bed; the bed was so soft. It didn't even make an irking noise beneath my weight.

"It's nothing like that, Jess." I unfurl my palm on the covers, wondering how much this bed cost. This was much more comfortable than Kyle's bed. Pushing thoughts of that man aside, I continued. "Georgia was my ticket out of Boston. I would never choose her over you, you know that."

Jessica pouted, regarding me with scrutinizing green eyes. Some sentences are incomplete if you are not reading this novel on FindNovel.net. She made me drink one like that before, and I swear never to fall into her trap again. "Fine, tell me what happened."

I took a deep breath. "Dinner was fine, and you know, the usual: we ended up in Kyle's mansion... in his bed." My face scrunched, the memory of our last night together knocking the air out of my lungs. Jessica stared at me but kept her silence. "And then I went to pee sometime in the night and saw his phone blinking like crazy...."

Once I was done telling Jessica my story, she was furious again. Not at me, but at my ex-fiance. "I will kill him." "You'd go to jail."

Her forehead creased. "I will poison his drink. No one would know I was the culprit. A lot of people hate Kyle Andrews."

It's true, though. Kyle deals with influential people, puts them behind bars, or keeps them from doing jail time. Death threats are nothing new to him. "Your conscience will never let you sleep at night." Jessica huffed. "Why are you taking that m*ron's side?"

"I'm not. Find a hired killer; it makes the job easier."

Her mouth formed an 'o' and she stared at me with wide eyes. "You know, that's a brilliant idea!"

"Oh, for the love of G*d, Jessica!" I groaned, ready to pull my hair from my scalp.

"What?!" her eyes shine with excitement. "Do you think they have that cover-up website like 'The Mechanic' where I can book someone like Bishop?"

Jessica had always been a fan of Action/Thriller movies. Sometimes she can't tell what's fiction from reality. "You're crazy, Jess. Maybe. Tell me when you find one, okay?"

She laughed, but I know she would really look for a cover-up website. She's been looking for one since I met her. Jessica is a dark romance enthusiast, believing that a mobster can fall in love with her or probably an assassin, an outlaw.

"I still hate you for leaving me like that, but I'm glad you are not here for all this chaos. I can deal with. missing my drinking buddy than see you struggling with the wedding. Georgia gave me Katerina...."

A piercing sound filled my ears at the mention of 'wedding.' I'm staring at Jessica. Her lips are moving, but I can't hear sh*t. Even my line of vision tunneled. The generous lighting inside the penthouse did nothing to light my clouded mind. "Sh*t..." Jessica whispers, pulling me out of my trance. "You are out of the loop."

I nodded, my cheeks already soaking with tears.

So Kyle really went through with his ultimatum. He told the world that he would marry Katerina right after I learned about them. Even if he told me he wouldn't, a small part of me hoped he'd chase me. At this moment, I want to annihilate that small part of me. Burn it at stake until it turns to dust.

"Oh, babe..." Jessica cooed, her eyes watering.

I smiled at her, wiping my cheeks, but my tears kept rolling like boulders. "It's better this way, Jess. At least I didn't get to walk to him at the altar."

Who was I kidding? I love Kyle. I thought he was my endgame, d*mmit!

"At least we didn't have kids, right? And at least I found out about it before we tied the knot... at least my name is still the same... I still have you, my job... and...." I searched my brain for everything that I should be grateful for. "Sofia..."

I sobbed, meeting my best friend's eyes. "Jess..."

"I know, babe," she whispers, hugging herself like I'm doing with myself. I feel hot, I feel cold, I feel empty. "I know..."
