Rachel was looking out of the window, lost in thought.

When she heard him beside her, she turned to look at him.

“About what my mother said earlier, you don’t have to take it seriously,” Roger said, looking straight into her eyes.

Knowing he still had something to add, Rachel didn’t say anything and let him finish.

“If you don’t want to get engaged, I will talk with my mother.

I will tell her I don’t want to get engaged for now.”

Seeing the serious look on Roger’s face, Rachel asked, “You don’t want to?”

Roger paused for a while, slightly taken aback.

“It’s not… Why? Did you mean it when you said you wanted to get engaged?”

Roger’s heart thumped hard as if it was about to jump out of his chest.

Rachel didn’t say anything and just nodded, but the smile on her face revealed her answer.

Under the faint light from the street post nearby, Roger’s eyes lit up with joy.

“Your mother is right.

I understand why they are worried.” Rachel looked into his eyes and smiled again.

“Don’t worry.

I didn’t make the decision because of your mother.

I also think it’s a good idea, so let’s do it.

Let’s get engaged.

Outside the Bennet family’s house

“Yes, Dewayne, we know.

Yes, we remember!” They were thanking their lucky stars that the person on the other end of the phone wasn’t in front of them.

If not, they would have probably been groveling on their knees.

After that, the man on the other end of the line huffed and hung up.

The two policemen let their shoulders fall in relief as they turned back to face Hector with the respect that was missing earlier on.

“We are sincerely sorry, Mr.

Brown.

We didn’t recognize you.

We’re sorry…”

Hector snorted and put up a hand to shut them up.

“I thought you wanted me to go with you.

Maybe I should just follow you to the police station.

After all, I haven’t seen your chief in a long while.”

“No, no, no, Mr.

Brown.

We know we were wrong.

Please, don’t do that.

It’s getting late.

Please, let us drive you home.”

Hector shook his head and said, “No, I’m good.

I may be old, but I’m not that old.

I can find my way home on my own.

Why don’t you go about your business instead and leave me alone?”

Both policemen gulped as their throats felt dry.

Their captain had just scolded them, and they didn’t want to risk being scolded again.

They weren’t sure if Hector was truly letting them go.

What if

Hector called Dewayne the moment they left?
