Captivation: Want Nothing But You -
Chapter 1424
Rachel gave him a sidelong glance but said nothing.
She moved the laptop back to her side and typed on the keyboard.
Peering at the screen, Wallace thought the codes looked familiar, but he couldn’t recall where or when he had first seen them.
Suddenly, the screen froze, and the codes stopped rolling upward.
A prompt appeared on the screen, showing a download link for a packet file.
When Wallace read the file name, his eyes widened in surprise.
“It’s the one on my computer.”
“You’re right, but it’s empty,” Rachel said.
She clicked the file open to show that it had nothing inside.
Wallace’s face fell.
“What do you mean?”
“The hackers must have anticipated this would happen because it’s pretty easy to restore the stolen files and blueprints once the file source is located through the data history.
To avoid this, they created several fake files and interspersed them with the actual one to make it almost impossible to restore.”
As Rachel explained calmly, she tapped the enter key.
More than twenty files with the same name showed up on the screen.
“We can check them one by one,” Wallace said immediately.
Grabbing the mouse, he moved the screen toward him and dragged the cursor toward one of the files.
“You only have three tries to check them,” Rachel said, not trying to stop Wallace when he was about to click the file.
Wallace turned to her in confusion, his hand on the mouse frozen.
“What? Three tries?”
“Yes.
If you open fake files in those three tries and fail to open the original one, the file packet will self-destruct.”
“Self—destruct?” Wallace couldn’t help but raise his voice.
“Then what will happen after?”
“You won’t be able to retrieve your files and blueprints anymore,”
Rachel said calmly, in sharp contrast to Wallace’s troubled tone.
“That’s nonsense!” Wallace blurted out.
“I’ve never heard of such a thing before.
Everything on the network has data.
Anything can be traced so long as it’s recorded in data history.
There’s no way it
Will disappear completely.
Also, I don’t think this type of hacking exists.
You’re messing up with me, aren’t you? Is it because you want a bigger reward?”
“If you don’t believe me, you can open the files and see for yourself,” Rachel said nonchalantly and took a sip of the water beside the laptop.
Wallace pressed his lips into a thin line.
He sounded confident earlier but couldn’t bring himself to click the file open now.
Wallace’s head throbbed as he looked hard at the files on the screen.
