As he looked at the name on the lower part of the paper, Dewayne silently wished he could go back in time.

He wanted to swallow the words he had said a few seconds ago.

Maybe the floor could open up and swallow him whole.

He was not picky.

After Joey completed his signature, Dewayne put away the materials and announced, “Alright, I’ll submit these now.”

Carson nodded and watched Dewayne leave.

Hector stood up and released a sigh of relief.

He turned to the boy and said, “Let’s go.

Don’t you want to see him?”

Hector left the office with Joey and Carson.

They went to the third floor, where they would cross the skywalk to get to the next building.

Clutching his walking stick, Hector led the way.

The police officers passing through the skywalk would greet him respectfully before going on their way.

The skywalk wasn’t long, and the bustle of the people walking through wasn’t that disturbing.

But Joey’s mind went blank as he followed behind Hector, muting the movements and other noises around him.

The only thing he could hear was Hector’s walking stick clacking against the floor.

After some time, they finally arrived at the next building and stopped at the door of a room.

Joey looked up at the door sign that read detention room.

..

Library

As Hector twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open, the inside of the room came into Joey’s view.

The room was dimly lit, with only a few shabby wooden chairs piled in rows.

In the farthest row sat a man in sloppy and slightly wrinkled clothes with his head hung low.

He seemed to have heard the noise, for his fingers moved slightly, but he didn’t raise his head to see who had come in.

Looking at the man, Joey clenched the hem of his clothes.

For a moment, Joey doubted if the man in front of him was Victor.

He seemed to have put up a glass cover around him to isolate himself from the world.

Unlike Joey, Hector and Carson weren’t surprised to see Victor in this state.

From the day Victor was brought to the police station, he had been cold and stubborn.

He wouldn’t say a single word and kept to himself the entire time.

Dewayne said he had never seen someone so uncooperative as Victor.

It was the first time Dewayne had been under such tremendous pressure in the fifteen years he had worked in the force.

He hoped that

Victor was innocent, but he had no confidence at all.

With his walking stick, Hector strode over to Victor and cleared his throat to get the latter’s attention.

But Victor showed no reaction and remained motionless in the chair with his eyes closed.

“You brat! Have you gone deaf? Answer me! How long will you keep playing mute? Don’t you want to get out?” Hector was so angry he could’ve hit Victor with his walking stick, but he restrained himself because the latter was still injured.

Leaning against the door and watching Hector get worked up, Carson couldn’t help but chuckle.
