Linda nodded slightly, and the helper went to ladle some soup, treating her with the same gentle care as one might a child. When the helper left, Linda seemed a little reluctant to see her go. Jamie reassured her, "Don't worry, she'll be back in a couple of days."

Linda continued eating, her focus unwavering. It was hard to tell if she truly understood Jamie's reassurances or not.

Oddly enough, despite her mental state being comparable to that of a five-year-old, many of her actions still carried the poise of an adult. Perhaps her body remembered what her mind could not. Jamie watched her mother eat with quiet relief, feeling a small sense of comfort seeing her mother in a more settled state.

Then, the doorbell rang.

Jamie glanced at Linda. "I'll just get the door," she said softly before heading toward it.

As she opened the door, she froze, completely taken aback by the unexpected sight before her.

Charlie, oblivious to her reaction, chirped cheerfully from Mrs. Lucas's arms, "Mommy! I missed you so much!"

Jamie looked up at Mrs. Lucas, who gave her a soft smile. "Charlie really wanted to see you. He's been so distracted at our house, so I thought I'd bring him back for a little while."

Caught off guard, Jamie froze in the doorway, unsure what to do or say.

Mrs. Lucas's sharp eyes seemed to pick up on her hesitation, but before she could ask, Charlie wriggled out of her arms, dashed forward, and hugged Jamie tightly. Without waiting for an explanation, he ran into the house and straight into Linda. Mrs. Lucas's gaze shifted from Linda to Jamie. The faint resemblance between the two struck her, though she wasn't entirely certain.

Charlie, however, had no reservations. "Mommy, who's this lady?" he asked, his curiosity on full display.

Jamie froze, unsure of how to respond. She realized how much she had kept from Charlie. His father's identity, Mrs. Lucas's role in their lives, and now, Linda-his grandmother.

A pang of guilt surged through her chest. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. Finally, she made a decision.

"Charlie," Jamie said softly, crouching to his eye level. "This is my mom. That means she's your grandma."

"Grandma?" Charlie's eyes widened with interest.

Jamie nodded, her tone patient and gentle as she began to explain.

Charlie had never known any family apart from her and, occasionally, Ben and Mrs. Lucas. The concept of a grandparent was foreign to him But Jamie carefully broke it down, piece by piece, like assembling a puzzle for a child to understand.

"Why haven't I met her before?" he asked, his innocent gaze locking onto hers.

"Because Grandma had an accident," Jamie's voice softened as her gaze dimmed, her thoughts scrambling for the right words to explain.

Charlie, always perceptive, gently said, "I get it, Mommy. Don't be sad. I'll make sure to get along with Grandma really well."

He reached out with his tiny hand, wiping away a tear that had escaped down Jamie's cheek.

Jamie's heart clenched, and she pulled Charlie into a tight hug. The weight of her guilt mingled with a sense of relief at her son's kindness and understanding.

When Charlie interacted with Linda, the connection between them was surprisingly.seamless. Despite her withdrawn nature around strangers, Linda accepted Charlie almost instantly. The two, both childlike in their own ways, quickly bonded as they played together.

Meanwhile, Jamie sat in the living room with Mrs. Lucas.

"Sorry to bring him back like this. I just thought Charlie would feel better seeing you. I hope I didn't cause any trouble," Mrs. Lucas said, glancing toward the room where Linda and Charlie were.

Jamie shook her head and offered a

sincere smile. “Not at all, Mrs. Lucas. Honestly, if it weren't for you, I might still be hesitating to let Charlie meet my mom. This worked out better

than I could have imagined"

It truly felt like an unintended blessing.

Mrs. Lucas smiled faintly in return but didn't fully mask the cloud of hesitation in her eyes. Jamie noticed the shift immediately and suspected there was more to this visit.

Sure enough, after a brief pause, Mrs. Lucas finally spoke up. "Actually, Jamie, there's something I wanted to ask you..."

She paused, struggling to find the right words, clearly uneasy about broaching the subject.
