Seeing the two men gearing up to strike again, Karina instinctively reached for Wilfred, ready to pull him away.

A little humiliation was better than getting hurt, she thought.

The blow Wilfred had taken earlier still made her heart pound with fear just thinking about it. She couldn't imagine the state of his back now. It was likely bruised and swollen but there was no time to sit down and check. Without hesitation, Karina reached out and grabbed Wilfred's hand. His wide, warm palm enveloped hers, though she didn't seem to notice.

"Dr. Wilfred, let's go. The police will handle this when they arrive," she urged, tugging him gently.

Karina didn't pay attention to the moment, but Wilfred did. Her hand felt so small, so delicate in his, as if he could completely enclose it with just a slight movement. A strange warmth crept into his chest, unsettling him. He pulled his hand free, his voice calm but firm. "There's no need."

Before Karina could argue, the sound of sirens pierced the tension. She turned and saw the police arriving, swiftly taking control of the situation and dispersing the angry crowd. Relief washed over her, and her eyes fell on Wilfred's phone, the corner of which stuck out from his pocket.

It looked like he had hastily stuffed it there.

Realization dawned on her that Wilfred must have already contacted the authorities while no one else had noticed. That explained his unshaken composure.

Soon, the police restrained the three agitated family members. Wilfred and Karina, as witnesses, were asked to provide statements.

However, Wilfred needed medical attention first.

Initially, he tried to treat his injuries himself, but no matter how skilled he was, there was no way he could properly reach the bruises on his back. After fumbling for some time, irritation began to set in. A knock at the door broke his focus.

Wilfred's sharp gaze shifted toward the sound as he called out, "Who is it?"

"It's me, Dr. Wilfred," Karina's voice came through, clear yet tinged with nervousness. "I thought... you might need help applying the medicine. If you don't mind, I could do it for you."

Karina's palms were slick with sweat as she stood outside the door, anxious and unsure what had possessed her to make such an offer.

Inside, Wilfred was silent for a long moment.

Karina felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment and awkwardly added, "You can just think of it as..."

Before she could finish, Wilfred's calm voice interrupted, "Come in."

Her heart pounded as she cautiously pushed the door open.

Wilfred sat on the edge of the

room's small cot. His white coat lay casually tossed aside, and his shirt was partially unbuttoned, one side still clinging to his frame while the other exposed part of his collarbone.

His Adam's apple moved as he swallowed, and the faint ripple of his muscles seemed both effortless and imposing.

Karina quickly lowered her gaze, the heat in her cheeks intensifying. Her hands trembled as she picked up the medicine, praying he wouldn't notice the dampness on the bottle from her sweaty palms. en FindNovel

Her attention soon shifted entirely, though, when she caught sight of his back.

A massive bruise, larger than her hand, stretched across his skin, deep and angry in color. It was stark and jarring against his otherwise pale complexion.

Karina hesitated before lightly brushing her fingers against the edge of the bruise, her voice barely above a whisper, "Does it hurt?"

Wilfred glanced at her briefly, noting her furrowed brows and the way her expression reflected genuine concern, as if she were the one injured.

He paused, then admitted quietly, "It hurts, but I can bear it."

Wilfred wasn't invincible, after all. He felt pain like anyone else. But he had grown used to it-far too used to it.

To those who knew his past, his

words would carry a deeper meaning. But Karina didn't know.

She assumed it was solely from the earlier incident, and her hands trembled as she applied the medicine.

She was angry on his behalf and pained by the sight of his injuries.
