Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 28

~~Logan’s PoV~~

I should be asleep but my mind is refusing to rest. I keep thinking over everything that happened in the last week. There’s the mate mess, of course. That is top priority for me as the future Alpha. Then there’s the attack on the school, targeting Sadie. And then there’s Sadie herself and the way she’s managed to bring me out of myself like no one else had succeeded in doing over the last year.

I’m still confused by the tingling feelings I had when we touched earlier, but the other feelings I have are getting clearer all the time.

I like her. I like the way she doesn’t hesitate to say what she’s thinking. I like that I feel comfortable telling her things, and I like when she opens up to me too. And she’s pretty too, in a totally natural and unassuming way. There was a moment at the gun range earlier when I was watching her grin as she took another shot at the target, and I actually wondered what it would be like to k**s her.

These are all things I haven’t felt for any girl in a long time. My whole life is divided into before the attack and after. In the before time, I used to go on dates. I never got serious with anyone, but I dated. I kissed some girls. I didn’t do a lot more because I was still young and because I didn’t want to lead anyone on. As the Alpha’s son, I can’t just go around sleeping with anyone I feel like and getting anyone’s hopes up. That’s not how my mother raised me and my sister would have kicked my a*s if I broke anyone’s heart.

So it was all pretty innocent before. And then after, well, I haven’t even thought about dating anyone. What right did I have to do things like dating and kissing and enjoying my life when Kara would never get to see another day?

That hasn’t changed, and yet somehow it has. Kara would like Sadie, I’m sure of it. I can almost hear my sister in my head, telling me not to be an i***t and not to waste my own life mourning hers.

But am I really ready to do that? It feels like such a big step, though maybe not quite as big as it felt just a week ago.

I roll over to try to get comfortable and that’s when the alarm goes off in the pack house. Immediately I jump out of bed and run down to my dad’s office, wearing only my pajama pants.

I’m no longer in charge of securing the house. My dad took that job away from me at my own request. Technically I should be the one being secured now, just as my sister was before, but when I rush into his office, my dad doesn’t send me away.

“What’s going on?” I ask, looking between him and the other men already gathered. Gamma Ellis is here of course, mind-linking with the defense team. Beta Aldric isn’t here yet because he doesn’t live in the house, but I’m sure he’s on the way.

“More intruders,” my dad grimaces to me before going back to barking orders at the others.

“Sadie?” I ask, taking another step towards him.

My dad turns back to me. “The guard on duty hasn’t seen anything. She’s fine for now and we’ve sent reinforcements.”

“Actually, Alpha,” Gamma Ellis interrupts a little nervously. “I’ve just heard from Anderson Miller. He went to check on his family when he got the alert and they’re all gone. The twins and Sadie.”

“F*ck,” my dad swore under his breath before his own eyes glazed over. It wasn’t long before he slammed his palm down on the desk in frustration. “I can’t link to the twins, they’re probably too overwhelmed to know how to control it yet. Ellis, send the tracking team to the Miller house. They should be able to follow their scents.”

I head towards the door too but he calls out to stop me.

“Logan, you can’t leave the house. It’s not safe.”

I know he’s right, but I also know that I’m going. I just need a wolf to come along. “I’ll take Micah with me.”

As if I summoned him, he appears at the door, with his dad close behind. “I’m here. What’s going on?”

“We’re going to look for Sadie,” I tell him. “She’s not at home.”

His eyes widen with real panic. “Where the f*ck is she?”

I’m a little surprised at his reaction until I remember that he’s in charge of keeping her safe during the day. That must be why he’s so worried.

“I don’t know,” I tell him honestly. “That’s why we’re going to look for her.”

Micah’s already turned and halfway out the door before I even finish the sentence.

“Be careful,” my dad calls out after us, his voice echoing down the halls as we run to the door. Just before I go out, I grab the gun I keep by the front door. I have one at every door, just in case the wolf who killed my mother and sister ever comes back.

“Where would she go?” Micah growls as we get outside. “In the middle of the f*cking night?”

Once again, I don’t have the answer but I tell him what I do know. “Ava and Aaron must be with her. They’re missing too.”

Micah’s eyes immediately glaze over, trying to reach out to them by mind-link. He frowns as his eyes clear. “I can’t get through directly but I can hear some of Ava’s thoughts. She’s thinking about noise in the trees. They must be in the woods.”

That helps a little, but we still need to narrow it down. I need to think. “Sadie doesn’t have her wolf,” I say, thinking it through out loud. “So they probably went down one of the paths. And the closest one to their house…”

“Is the one to the lake,” Micah cuts me off as he runs forward and shifts into his wolf.

“Wait for me,” I order him since he looks like he’s about to take off without me. He growls in frustration but holds back, keeping pace with me as I take off at a sprint.

It’s not too long before we come across an abandoned bike and Micah immediately sniffs at it, then starts following his nose further into the woods.

It’s frustrating as hell that I can’t do all this stuff myself. I’ve always been looking forward to getting my wolf, but now I want him more than ever.

I c*ck the gun as we move deeper into the woods, just in case. Micah’s ears are twitching more which I think must mean we’re getting closer, and then we hear it.

A scream.

Sadie’s scream.
