Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 39

~~Sadie’s PoV~~

I’m still a bit confused about what I just witnessed as Logan and I walk back to the car. The way they were talking about breaking the link to the pack, I kind of expected thunder crashes and storm clouds to roll in, but I didn’t actually see anything happen other than Micah grimace a little bit.

They both say it’s a big deal so it must be a big deal, but I still don’t get it.

What’s a bigger deal to me is how Micah kissed me last night. I honestly hadn’t thought about him in that way at all, mostly because he was such an a*s to me when I first arrived. He’s been nicer to me lately, but I figured it was just a matter of tolerating me now. I never guessed that he actually was interested in me like that.

And the k**s was kind of nice, I have to admit. He’s a really good-looking guy, I thought that even when I thought he was an a*s, but when he’s relaxed and laughing, it makes him even better looking. And he makes me laugh too, and he makes me feel protected when he’s watching out for me.

Is there a spark there? I really don’t know. I thought about it for a long time last night. I don’t feel naturally drawn to him like I do with Logan, like I did from the first time Logan and I met. But I like that Micah was up front with me and told me how he felt without putting any pressure on me to reciprocate. Especially since Logan seems to have withdrawn from me, and I don’t know why.

But we’ve got a long drive together back to Westbridge now, and I intend to find out.

“What’s going on with you?” I ask him as soon as we’re back out on the highway and he doesn’t have to pay so much attention to the roads.

Logan’s eyes dart over to me nervously. “What do you mean?”

I cross my arms. “You know what I mean. We kissed in your kitchen last night and then you pretended it didn’t happen. How is that supposed to make me feel?”

He winces as he takes one hand off the wheel to rub the back of his neck. “You’re right, that was a shitty thing to do. I’m sorry.”

Well, at least we agree on that. “So what’s going on? If you didn’t like it, you can just tell me so. But it kinda felt to me like you did.”

I’ve kissed enough guys to know when they’re into it or not, and I was pretty damn sure Logan was into it.

He winces again, his face scrunching up uncomfortably. “Of course I liked it. I like you, Sadie. I think that’s obvious.”

“It’s not really obvious when you push me away like that.” I wasn’t letting him off the hook so easily.

“Okay, well, then let me be clear. I like you, Sadie.”

Warmth spreads through me as I hear the sincerity in his voice. He’s not just saying that. He really does mean it, but that only leaves me more confused.

“So then what’s the problem? In case it wasn’t obvious, I like you too.”

I thought kissing him was a pretty big hint in that direction, but maybe he needs to hear the words too.

He looks pleased that I’ve said it, a smile crossing his face, but then he sighs.

“The problem is that you might not be my mate.”

I g***n in frustration. “Are you kidding me?” After everything that’s just happened with Ava and Aaron and Laurel, how is that possibly a valid excuse right now?

He sighs again at the question, but he doesn’t back down. “I’m serious. My dad and I had a talk, about the whole mess with mates and why it’s such a big deal. I know you don’t understand it, Sadie, but it really is a vital part of who we are as werewolves. Your mate is the ideal person for you. We can’t choose any better than the moon goddess chooses for us.”

“You can’t really believe that.” He’s so enlightened about everything else, how can he hold to that kind of idea? “How is some goddess supposed to know better than you do who’s right for you? How do you even know she’s real? Has anyone ever seen her?”

“Yeah, actually, they have.”

His answer takes me completely by surprise. I wasn’t expecting that and my surprise shows in my voice. “Really?”

Logan laughs at my shock. “Yeah. I haven’t seen her personally, but other people have. Apparently because there are so many wolves all over the world, she doesn’t have time to watch over them all at the same time, so she chooses representatives in different packs, kind of like delegates, to hold some of her power.”

“What kind of powers do they have?” This all sounds like science fiction to me, but Logan obviously believes it, so I try to as well.

“They don’t actually get powers of their own. It’s more like they’re vessels for the moon goddess’ wishes. Her plans flow through them, if that makes sense. Her presence in them helps to keep everything running smoothly.”

It doesn’t completely make sense to me, but it does make me wonder. “So what would happen if something happened to these vessels? Like, if they died?”

Logan frowns. “I think she chooses a new one before that happens.”

“But what if she didn’t?” I press, starting to get excited as the idea comes together in my head. If he’s telling me the truth, then I might be onto something. “Wouldn’t that mean her plans got messed up? Like, maybe with people getting the wrong mates?”

Logan immediately understands what I’m saying and his eyes go wide. “Holy s**t. You might be right, Sadie. Maybe that’s what’s going on. Maybe something happened to the person who was the moon goddess’ vessel. I have to tell my dad, hang on.”

He starts punching in a number on the car’s computer and soon he’s got the Alpha on his phone, filling him in on what I’ve just said.

The Alpha’s deep voice comes through the car speakers. “That’s very clever, Sadie, well done. I can’t believe none of us thought of it.”

I’m a bit surprised too. I mean, I barely know anything about this stuff, but maybe that’s why it came to me and not them, because I was trying to understand how it all works instead of knowing it already.

“So who was the vessel?” I ask. Surely if the vessel is this important to keep things running smoothly, they would protect him or her.

“Nobody knows,” the Alpha says, and Logan nods in agreement. “When someone is chosen, the goddess swears them to secrecy, for their own protection.”

“Because if someone found out,” Logan adds. “They might try to…”

His eyes go wide again as he trail off. He’s obviously just thought of something else, but this time it’s me who doesn’t know where this is going.
