As Ian held Maja close, she began to stir in his arms, nestled in the backseat of Beck’s car. Beck drove

with cautious precision, his eyes misting up with unshed tears. Glancing at the rearview mirror, he saw

Maja’s slight figure curled up against Ian. A soft cough broke the silence. “Maja, you awake?” Ian’s

voice was a mix of concern and relief as he gently patted her back. Maja’s eyes fluttered open, her

vision blurred and her senses engulfed in an icy dread that seemed to snake around her heart. But

Ian’s warmth slowly seeped back into her, banishing the cold. “Ian.” Her voice was a mere whisper,

laced with a longing to melt into his embrace. Ian felt a sharp pain in his chest, berating himself for

letting her down once again. “It’s okay, Maja. You’re safe now,” he assured her, though the tremor in his

voice betrayed his fear. Maja nodded, too exhausted to speak. She was taken to the hospital for a

check-up, where the doctor, after a glance at the medical report, delivered an unexpected bombshell.

“There’s nothing major to worry about, but Miss, you need to take care of yourself. You’re pregnant.”

The news hit Ian and Maja like a freight train. Shock. Disbelief. It took Maja a few seconds to process

the information. Her mind felt jammed.

“Doctor, are you sure? We’ve been careful.” The doctor adjusted his glasses, “I’m certain. Have you

engaged in any unprotected activities?” Maja’s cheeks flushed crimson as she stuttered, looking down

at the floor. Ian, on the other hand, stood frozen, the buzzing in his ears drowning out the world. The

doctor, puzzled by their reaction, asked, “Aren’t you planning on keeping the child? You need to decide

soon if you don’t want to go through with the pregnancy.” Ian snapped out of his daze. “Keep it? Of

course, we want to, but.” His gaze flickered nervously toward Maja. They hadn’t even had their

wedding or obtained a marriage license. An unplanned pregnancy wasn’t what they wanted, especially

since Maja had already endured one loss for him. Maja remained silent, her mind racing with the

untimely complications the child would bring. Sensing her hesitation, the doctor closed the report. “If

you decide to keep the baby, you must start taking vitamins and folic acid immediately. If not, you

should schedule the procedure soon; it’s less risky the earlier you do it.” The room was thick with

unsaid words when Beck abruptly grabbed the doctor’s hand, his voice tight with desperation. “Doc,

please check again. There must be a mistake. She’s too young for this. Have another look, please. She

shouldn’t have to suffer through this.” Maja found Beck’s urgency odd. “Beck, what’s gotten into you?”

Beck ignored her, his earnest gaze fixed on the doctor. “Maybe there’s an issue with the hospital’s

equipment. Just check one more time. They’ve been careful. She can’t be pregnant!” The doctor,

slightly taken aback, gently removed Beck’s grip. “Sir, unless you have a stake in this child’s future, I

don’t see why you’re so agitated.” “Damn it, don’t talk nonsense!” Beck’s agitation flared. “Quack!

You’re a quack!” The doctor, surrounded by a few nurses, left without further comment, leaving them to

grapple with the life-changing news amidst the sterile silence of the hospital room.
