Divorced Heiress
Chapter 5

Stop thinking about what tormented me was almost impossible, especially now with the image on my phone, which I decided to look at for the second time as a masochist, while deciding whether to delete it or keep it in my gallery. There was no need to be a fortune teller or ask for explanations to know that they had just been together in a very intimate way in the bed that I once shared with Mr. Lancaster. Despite trying to encourage myself, I succumbed to the disappointment and pain of being betrayed by the least expected person. I couldn't continue like this every day of my life, I couldn't allow Rachel and Mr. Lancaster to do whatever they wanted with my heart, my feelings, and my dignity.

If they decided to screw everything up with me to be together, well, go ahead, they could do whatever they wanted. I would keep myself as far away as possible. Once Alexander had signed the divorce papers, they wouldn't hear anything from me again. Determined and with my head held high, I wiped away the tears on my cheeks before walking to my wardrobe and contemplating between several dresses for the banquet organized by my father. It didn't take long when Maga knocked on the door and after a few seconds, revealed that brown-haired woman with brown eyes and the biggest, most genuine smile I had ever seen in my life.

"It can't be. It can't be!" Abby let herself be carried away by her excitement upon seeing me and dropped the shopping bags she had in her hands to rush over and hug me with such force that she nearly took my breath away.

"You're back, you have no idea how much I missed you, Sari. I can't believe it! My best friend is back!"

I returned her enthusiastic hug, although I struggled to breathe. It had been so long since I last saw my best friend, my true best friend, I was going to get sentimental, but I focused on not losing my breath.

"Abby, I missed you too, but if you keep hugging me so tight, you're going to lose me forever." I said with difficulty, and realizing the strength she was exerting on me, she let go, but she didn't let go of my hands, her smile reaching her eyes. "I should have never left, Abby."

"Come on, we're not here to lament. What's done is done. You wanted to be with that guy you met who became the youngest and most sought-after entrepreneur in New York, perfect. You were with him, excellent. You got married, great. Now you're going to get a divorce, fine. You satisfied your desires and now you're back to do whatever the hell you want, even better!"

She infected me with her good humor and all the positive vibes that characterized her, but this time I couldn't do what I wanted, I didn't come back alone, I came back accompanied.

"Well... I'm afraid not." I said, fearing her reaction when she found out that I was pregnant, not even to my father's reaction was I so afraid.

"Don't come telling me that you're going to die because of some idiot. I don't know what he did to you, but if you're here, I can imagine it." She snapped with annoyance, while picking up the bags she had dropped when she entered the room, leaving them on the bed.

"Look at the woman you are, you're the heiress of Doinel, a woman who exudes class and sensuality, you're so brilliant, strong. You have a damn smile for everyone and you're spectacularly authentic. You're capable of anything, and just because an idiot hurt you, doesn't mean you won't continue with your life. You're wrong, that's exactly what you'll do, you'll continue with your wonderful life and you'll show him that he lost the best thing that could have happened in his miserable life. I'll pick your dress, my brother will attend the banquet and I know he'll be happy to see you."

Abby disappeared into the wardrobe with all her confidence, as she always had, and came back with a stack of dresses that she left on the bed. At least we still maintain the trust we always had, despite the time we spent without seeing each other or communicating.

And as always, I had to mention her brother. I thought that over time, that crazy idea of seeing her brother with her best friend would fade away from her mind, but it seemed she would continue to long for me to be her sister-in-law until the end of time. "I'm pregnant," I blurted out directly, without beating around the bush, and she stopped searching for my dress for tonight.

Her gaze showed surprise, yes, she was very surprised, so much so that she had to sit on the bed and fanned her face with her hand in a dramatic way, worthy of the drama queen.

"It can't be, is that the reason you're here? He didn't want it?" she asked with a mix of worry and anger in her voice, alternating her gaze between my face and my belly covered with a bathrobe.

I thought that if it had been like that, it wouldn't be as tragic as the real reason, but he didn't even know I was pregnant.

"He cheated on me with my friend," I informed her of the real reason so she wouldn't jump to her own conclusions, and her face completely fell apart.

I sat beside her and told her about the tragic moment I discovered Alexander with Rachel just when I was about to tell him the news that he was going to be a father. I also updated her on the dealings of his family and some of his friends, who didn't really like me. Abby kept cursing and insulting the Lancaster family, the friends, and especially Rachel, who ultimately revealed her false friendship.

"You know what? With this, you demonstrate that you are stronger than anyone can imagine. If I were in your place, I would be dying, no! I would be seeking revenge. But look at you, cool as a cucumber and with all the attitude, that's my friend. Even more, that bastard doesn't deserve a woman like you, and that bitch, what kind of friends did you find? She has no dignity at all. Karma will take care of them, you just sit back and watch as they pay for it. Look, this dress will look perfect on you. I'll call my stylists to work their magic,"

She got up from the bed, leaving aside the dresses she had discarded and made a call on her cellphone.

"Rose, come to the Doinel villa, tonight will be very special.

The club was filled with high society people. My father had arranged an exclusive banquet, where not just anyone could enter, especially not the paparazzi who never waste an opportunity to create news about any important figure.

He did it mostly so the media wouldn't dig deep enough to find the face of the Doinel heiress. My father preferred it that way since the day they tried to kidnap me for a hefty ransom. Luckily, I was very young and I don't have any memory of that tragic moment. The red dress with diamonds on the skirt from my father's collection enhanced my glossy skin and still slim waist. The long skirt had a high slit that exposed my right leg, it definitely looked very sensual and discreet at the same time.

I left my brown hair to fall over my shoulder, revealing the open back of the dress. The stylists had done a great job with the subtle makeup, highlighting each feature of my face without exaggerating. I felt very comfortable and satisfied with the result, but I couldn't help feeling nervous.

It had been many years since I attended any high society events, let alone ones organized by Leonardo Doinel. I had set all of this aside to be with Alexander, who, despite attending similar banquets and major events for his company, only took me to one and I didn't stay for more than twenty minutes.

I met his sister and mother, who waited for him to let his guard down to attack me for attending an event that was only meant for wealthy and important people, not a nobody like me.

The truth was, I didn't care what they said about me, I ignored their constant attacks, however, I left the place when they mentioned that Alexander's image would be affected by being accompanied by a poor wife with dubious family background.

I was so blinded by love that I preferred to protect his image, preventing him from being seen with me at important events.

Forget those memories.

"You look beautiful." My father said for the umpteenth time. His arm was linked with mine as he guided me into the huge and luxurious banquet hall of the Palace Royal Club. Together, we greeted the guests without mentioning at any point that we were father and daughter.

I smiled in response and quickly found my friend hooked arm in arm with a man almost six feet tall, with brown eyes that I remembered even though he had a tan, a perfectly groomed stubble, and an athletic body.

"Hey! You look beautiful. Mr. Doinel, I hope you don't mind if I steal your daughter for a few minutes. I'll bring her back in an instant."

My father gave her a serious look, but she didn't erase the smile from her face. She was more animated than anyone else in this place.

"Miss Dubois, I see you're still a troublemaker, nevertheless, I'll lend her to you."

I laughed at my father's words. He had always called my friend a troublemaker, and that's just who she was and always would be.

"Thank you for your compliment, Mr. Doinel." She said with a wide smile, apparently she liked it when my father called her that, or maybe she had just gotten so used to it that it would be strange if he didn't call her that. "Go on, don't worry, Sarah is in good hands."

"I doubt it." My father said to himself, but I heard him.

"I'll be waiting for you at the table with your mother, don't take too long. I have an important announcement to make in a few minutes. I love you."

He kissed my forehead, as he had done since I could remember, and left, not before saying goodbye to my friend and her companion.

"I know your father is very strict, but I'm sure deep down in his heart, he likes me." She said after letting go of the brunette's arm and hooking onto mine.

Of course, my father liked her, it was just that he didn't agree with how liberal and wild Abby was. "Now, setting aside the topic of grumpy Doinel, it's time for you to greet the man who should be married to you right now." She said, and I gave her a discreet look while digging my nails into her arm for the nonsense she had just said.

"Ouch, no violence."

"Abby, for God's sake, stop saying so much nonsense."

The deep, calm, and profound voice of the man made me look at him. For a moment, I thought he would agree with Abby's craziness, so I was relieved to know that I wasn't the only sensible one.

"Long time no see, Sarah, look at you, all grown up." The brunette said, his brown eyes glistening as he approached me to envelop me in a hug as a greeting. I closed my eyes and smiled at the comfort of his arms. I had missed him.

"Not just a woman, but a woman who is perfect for you." We separated at the same time upon hearing Abby's nonsensical remark. Both of us gave her a stern look, and she shrugged.

"I'll be quiet for a few minutes, but don't think I'll give up."

"It's nice to see you after so many years, Paul. You've become quite the hunk. You didn't look like this the last time I saw you." I greeted him amiably, trying to ignore my friend who kept intertwining her fingers to make the shape of a heart.

She was going to drive me crazy. When would she understand that I didn't like her brother that way and I never would? I mean, he was a very elegant, attractive, tall man with a manly face, successful and focused, but my tastes were different, even if those tastes ended up being t*****e for me.

"Nothing I can't achieve by exercising. Did you come back to stay? I hope so, because that way we can work together for a long time." He suddenly changed the subject, and I didn't quite understand what he meant by working together.

I knew well that his parents are partners in my father's company. But working together? I didn't think so.

"Well, yes, I'm staying, I don't plan on going anywhere, why do you say that..." I was about to ask him about the work topic, but my father arrived at the scene, interrupting anything that was about to come out of my mouth.

"Excuse my interruption, but it's been enough, I need to make an announcement with Sarah." my father took my hand and made me walk, distancing me from the Dubois siblings and the conversation with Paul. "How rude, Mr. Doinel."

My father shot Abby a sharp glance, who seemed frustrated by the interruption, although she was thankful that my father was rescuing me, otherwise I would end up engaged to Paul thanks to his sister.

"What announcement are you going to make? Are you going to tell the media that I'm your daughter?"

My father gave me a half-smile as we walked among people chatting animatedly with champagne glasses in hand.

"Something much better." A shiver ran down my spine and it was impossible not to feel nervous about the smile that wouldn't disappear from my father's face.

Okay, he wasn't going to say that I was his daughter, the Doinel heiress, but that didn't change the fact that he would present me to high society, I didn't know for what reason. I just hoped that the idea my father had in mind didn't end up affecting the family. Breathe, it's okay, there are no paparazzi. I can trust my father.

We both went up on stage, interrupting the melodious live piano piece, I stayed behind my father, hidden where no one could see me, and he began his speech about friendship, family, and how important everyone gathered there was, until he touched on the topic of his company, from when his parents founded it, to when he took charge with his wife.

I already knew the story by heart, so I stopped paying attention to what he was saying and focused on the dizziness I was feeling at that moment.

Baby, I don't know you yet, but don't do this to mom right now, I need to be focused.

When I managed to stabilize myself and dispel the dizziness that almost made me fall, I heard my father's words, which left me dumbfounded.

"That's why I'm pleased to introduce you to the new vice president of Doinel, Sarah Petit."

My body froze and I had to repeat those words over and over again to analyze them.

Did I hear correctly? Was my father making me the vice president? A supposed unknown person to the public eye with a high executive position, in the most prestigious fashion company in the world.

Vice president, me?

The sound of applause made me react and I was forced to join my father's side so as not to offend him.

I looked at the people staring at us, some surprised, others confused, and others with neutral expressions, as if it were an irrelevant matter, and finally I saw the smiling Dubois siblings next to their parents, Paul's genuine smile made me realize what he meant by working together for a long time.

Seeing my mother's excitement was enough to make me feel worthy of such a position.

Of course, I could be the vice president, that was why I studied, to take the reins of the company when he decided to take a break from business.

I stood by his side, while he gave a brief introduction of myself and mentioned that such an important position was waiting for someone as capable as me, finally admitting that he had taken me by surprise with the last-minute announcement.

After introducing myself and giving a few words of gratitude, we got off the stage and the guests began to congratulate me as if they had known me all their lives, I smiled cordially at everyone, until I finally reached my mother, who gave me an effusive hug and told me how proud she was of me.

"From a devoted wife to vice president of a renowned company, that's my friend!" Abby didn't fall behind in congratulating me, and in a very humorous way, which was just like her. She hugged me without any delicacy.

"Congratulations, Sari." Paul saved me from Abby's roughness and enveloped me in his warm and strong arms for the second time, I reciprocated without erasing the genuine smile on my face, while inhaling his masculine scent.

"So, are you back to stay? Because we will make a great team at Doinel." he asked, breaking our hug, but keeping his hand on my waist, waiting for my response with his eyes fixed on my face.

I delicately placed my hand on his shoulder before answering.

"I have no doubt about that, Paul. And yes, I came back to stay, I have no intention of leaving the place I should have never left." I replied confidently and more determined than ever.

This was my place and it always would be. I was far away from the Lancasters, far enough to never hear from them again in my life.
