The valet had already swung by to open the car door, but there was a noticeable pause before anyone stepped out. Just as he was about to lean in and say something, the driver hopped out instead. He went to the trunk and pulled out a wheelchair. That's when the valet noticed it-underneath the elegant lady's dress, she had only one leg. With a bit of help from the valet and the driver, she settled into the wheelchair.

The driver, looking a bit worried, asked, "Miss, are you sure you'll be okay on your own? Want me to push you inside?" Her response had a sharp edge to it: "No, thank you. I've got it."

As soon as Chloe rolled into the banquet hall, she became the center of attention. A big screen was broadcasting the red carpet action outside, and everyone knew she and Connor had just tied the knot. Guests swarmed in to congratulate them, creating a lively buzz around the couple. Chloe recognized a few faces, but most were strangers to her.

Connor took the time to introduce her to some key people-senior execs from Sartori Corporation. Chloe greeted them with all the grace and politeness she could muster. Yet, she couldn't help but notice that behind their courteous facades, many of their comments were laced with sarcasm and subtle digs.

Given their status within Sartori Corporation, Chloe maintained her composure and smiled for Connor's sake. But whenever they encountered such thinly veiled hostility, Connor would gently steer Chloe away. After a few run-ins, Chloe whispered to him, "Isn't it a bit rude to just walk away like this?"

Chloe sighed, "I can handle a bit of attitude. After all, they're like your family, and to them, we're an odd match. There's no need for you to make it awkward on my behalf." Connor replied, "They're all in Claire's camp, so there's no need to play nice."

Chloe was taken aback, "All of them?" She thought back to the senior execs she'd just met about eighty percent seemed to give her the cold shoulder. Were they all loyal to Claire?

Connor nodded, "Yeah, Claire's got way more clout in the company. She's been in the game since she was twenty, as the general manager."

Chloe mulled over this, and Connor added, "Even if they're not with Claire, if anyone gives you trouble, you can push back. I'm here to back you up, not let you take heat for me."

Chloe grinned, "Got it. Thanks."

Chloe was never one to take things lying down. She was just trying to navigate the company politics without causing a stir for Connor's sake. She didn't want to step on any toes especially since some of these people might be Connor's atties down the line. But knowing they were Claire's people, she felt no obligation to be overly courteous.

Still, a sense of unease settled over her. This annual meeting had a critical moment looming-Jeffery was set to announce the heir to Sartori Corporation. He planned to step down by year-end, and the heir apparent was set to be none other than Ms. Claire.

Sartori Corporation had its fingers in countless pies, spanning various industries. This was a seismic shift in the leadership of a business

empire. The news was a hot topic across the board. If Claire ascended to the throne as Ms. Claire, she'd likely throw Connor under the bus at every opportunity. His projects could face the axe, and even finishing the Paradise Resort might become a hurdle.

Chloe scanned the room and spotted Claire. As always, she was the picture of elegance and poise.
