Chapter 15

Kyle’s P.O.V.

“Do you really want Violet Carter as a field assistant for your team, huh?” Mr Stammers asked me with raised brows in suspicion and I looked at the boys standing behind me. “Yes, Mr Stammers. She is the best choice among all the other students”, I asked him in a confident and calm tone. “And why is that?” he asked me immediately and I took a deep breath. “The reason that we want her as our assistant is what you said yesterday. She is a nerd and not only does she cope with her studies while staying with us during the games but she can also help us too. She is also good at explaining the problems”, I told him a reason related to our studies. He looked behind me at the boys this time.

“Yes, Mr Stammers….. we all think that having her as our assistant will benefit all of us in terms of studies too. We will have our mid-term right after the tournament and we all think that she can help us in our studies during the tournament”, Ethan answered in a confident tone. I could say that Mr Stammers was not completely convinced with our reason, but this was the best reason that we could give to him about why we wanted Violet Carter as our assistant in the game. “Okay… but you have to give a second name too. After what happened to her today, I don’t think that she will agree to be with any team. In case, she refuses to accept the position, I need a second name too”, Mr Stammers asked me to choose another name while giving me the reason for the same.

“You have to convince her, Mr Stammers. This is also our final year in school and none of us wants to lose our grades. You know our parents well, Mr Stammers”, Noah spoke this time and I just looked at the change of expressions on Mr Stammer’s face. He had a complicated expression on his face right now. “Yes, Mr Stammers….. we promise that we will behave…. But convince her to be with our team”, this was Dustin this time and I looked behind him while narrowing my eyes in annoyance. He was the most mischievous among all of us and he was talking about behaving well. This was really something new for all of us as everyone was looking at him with raised brows.

Mr Stammers chuckled laugh this time. “Alright boys… let me talk with her tomorrow”, Mr Stammers said and we all nodded before he walked away. We all walked out of the boy’s room towards the playground. We still have an hour to practice today and none of us wanted to waste our time anymore. “Do you think she will be okay after what Sia and her minions did with her?” I heard someone behind me asking in a low tone. I pursed my lips into a thin line but didn’t look behind me at the boy who was talking. “I can’t say anything, Nick. You should have seen her when they carried her to the medical room. She was unconscious and looking so pale”, the other boy replied to Nick and also described Violet’s condition.

“Hey”, I heard Ethan and looked at him beside me. He said nothing again but put his hand on my shoulder. The truth was that all of us were completely shaken by what happened to Violet in the morning. Sia and her minions were scolded badly by the principal but she was left with a warning and no action was taken against her. Two of her minions were suspended for a whole week, but this was not a fair punishment. Sia once again escaped from punishment due to her father. We forced Violet to sit with us during the lunch break but I could see how scared she was. We treated her invisible during lunch only to put her at ease, but she was not stable. She flinched whenever we laughed or said something in a loud tone.

“What’s her problem, man?” I heard Noah’s complaining voice and came out of my stance. We were now on the ground and we had changed our shoes. “What is it?” I asked him in a confused tone and he sighed aloud angrily. He signalled me silently to see in the other direction. I followed his gaze and looked in the said direction. My anger flared up as soon as I saw Sia looking at us as if she would eat us alive. “Ignore her and concentrate on your practice”, I instructed Noah in a cold tone and stood up from the bench where I was sitting to change my shoes. Noah huffed angrily and then jogged towards the court.

I was the setter in the team and that made me more responsible than other players. The best thing was that my communication with other players was good during our matches and our coordination was the key to our success. Just like a quarterback in football, this position was also tough because this is the setter’s job to get the second ball up to one of the hitters, even if the first pass was not any good. A setter is responsible for analysing the situation quickly and making a decision without wasting a second. A setter doesn’t have too much time to think and make decisions during the game and that was why I had this position in the team because I can make decisions really quick.

Ethan was the outside hitter, Noah was the middle blocker, Dustin was the defensive specialist and Justin was the serving specialist. Five of us were like an invincible team and that is why we have been together since the beginning of this team because of our bonding and coordination during the match. I was really proud of my team. We were well coordinated with other members too and our game didn’t affect if someone changed positions with any of them. I needed to distract myself from Violet for the time being. So, I decided to take part in the practice and jogged behind Noah. We divided the team into two and both teams took positions on either side of the net. The game started soon and we all concentrated on our games.

We all lay down on the ground while breathing heavily after playing for half an hour continuously. I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down. “We need to work on our defence”, I heard Ethan after some time. He was right here. Dustin was good at defence but Nick, who was the other defensive specialist on the team didn’t play well today. “We have enough time and I am sure that Nick will improve soon. You have seen his game”, I answered him without opening my eyes while taking deep breaths. “I know, bro”, he replied to me after some time and once again there was silence among us. “Let’s have a break of five minutes and then we will resume practising. This time, we will cross switch the players”, I instructed everyone and they all confirmed my command in unison.

I stood up from the floor and went towards the benches where we had kept our bags and water bottles. I took my water bottle and took a large gulp to ease my thirst. “I saw that you got a new playtoy for you”, I grimaced in disgust but didn’t look at Sia who was now standing on the other side of the fence. “That’s none of your business, Bishop. Stay within your limit or else don’t blame me later for being ruthless”, I threatened her in a cold tone and then took another sip from my bottle. I still remembered Violet’s pale face when she went back to her home in Ethan’s car later after lunch. Ethan arranged that after talking with her mom and informed the principal. “You should understand, Kyle, who is better for you. She can be a plaything for you but she can’t be with you in a long term. The girl who is qualified to be your girlfriend is only me here”, her words made me look at her with disdain this time.

“What makes you think that you are qualified for being my girlfriend, huh?” I asked her in a sarcastic tone while still looking at her in disdain. I slowly went near her and gave her a nasty look. “You slept with almost every popular boy in school except me and my friends. Do you still believe that you are qualified for being my girlfriend, huh? As I said earlier, I can hook up with any of your minions but I will never touch you”, I gave him a dirty and nasty look while looking at her from head to toe. Her eyes widened in shock and she opened her mouth to say something, but I didn’t give her any chance to speak and walked away from her. “Kyle…. I am not finished yet”, she yelled behind me but I didn’t stop. “Go to your new play toy to satisfy your need, Bishop”, I yelled aloud and everyone looked immediately towards us. I saw Mr Stammers glaring at me but I didn’t pay attention to him.

“Do you think that it will stop her, huh?” Ethan asked me in a mocking tone but I just glared at him. “Take your positions now”, I yelled while clapping to get the attention of all the players. Ethan just shook his head and then took his position on the opposite side of the net. I didn’t give a s**t about what Sia wanted. She could have any other boys but not me and I was clear about what I wanted. To be honest, I wanted to teach her a lesson for what she did with Violet. I didn’t know why I was worried about Violet. She shouldn’t be my concern but I was not able to shake off her paled and exhausted face from my mind and it was really bothered me now.
