Roman's POV
I knew without a doubt that Cleo would rather lose herself forever than for our daughter to one day walk this road. A parent's sole goal is to ensure their children grow up safe. The problem was that Cleo had been looking at it all wrong. Each of us was born with the blood of a god or goddess. However, our pup came from both. The dark and the light are equal parts living in harmony within her tiny body. She was born to rule the underworld, her entire persona more than strong enough to sustain from giving in to a single part of herself. By accepting her role as Queen when she came of age, there was no risk of her losing herself.
I didn't want to believe the things she could one day be capable of, but now I do. I believe she will be capable of as much good just as she will be capable of causing irreparable destruction, but we had time to ensure she chose correctly. She would need Cleo and me to teach her the difference between wrong and right while freely embracing who she was. The last thing I wanted was for her to deny herself and her birthright.
When Cleo vanished, my father took me inside and updated me on our situation. After Layla told me what happened, it didn't take a genius to determine why Cleo turned to the darkness for support.
Our pup had been taken from us, Cleo had died, and although she returned, she remained unconscious for some time. It was only natural for her to have not bonded immediately with our pup. She hadn't been given a chance. I just wished that the moment she felt like she had failed, she'd gone to my sister. However, I knew Cleo and knew she wasn't the type to be free with her feelings.
"Where is Cleo now?" There was an unease in his voice, but who could blame him. I myself felt on edge.
"I wish I knew. She's created a mental block between us. I can't speak to her or Freya, and I can't see into her mind to find her like before. Balthazar keeps forcing himself against the block, but it's both pointless and mentally draining." "Her demonic side has gotten stronger. If she dives too deep, we won't get her back." I loved Layla, but sometimes she did wind me up. I mean, state the bloody obvious, why don't you. "Don't you have a pack to run and a family to be with?"
"I am with the family that needs me the most. Lewis knows what he's doing, and our kids are fine. I'm not going anywhere until we get this one's mother back." Layla gently stroked the pup's ginger locks before placing her other hand on my back.
"With everything that's gone on, we haven't even named her."
"Then name her."
"I can't, not without Cleo. It wouldn't be right." Layla just nodded before my father's barrelled in through the door.
Axel's lip was split, and Hector had a slice from his eyebrow down to his jaw. AN EXPLOSION SOUNDED before I could ask what was happening, causing the room to shake. As smoke came under the door, I knew the fight of our lives was about to begin.
"Layla, get her out of here!" Wasting no time, I watched as my sister picked up my pup and held her close to her chest before jumping from my balcony. The fight would be easier to win, knowing Layla would keep her safe.
"The council is here and looking for blood. They destroyed the guard posts on the west and eastern sides. We've alerted everyone that this pack is no longer safe, and they are to use the tunnels to leave." My fathers had done the right thing, except the tunnels hadn't been used in years, and I didn't know what condition they were in. After the man who tried to kill my grandmother used them to escape with his mate, they were sealed and only used in emergencies. "They can't condemn everyone else!"
"Well, they have. Their warriors are killing anyone they encounter. What Cleo did have them rattled. They're not taking prisoners this time, son. It's kill or be killed." "But she isn't here!"
"They don't give a fuck Roman. She's your mate; they know you would go to the ends of the earth to protect her. They will not stop until all is lost!" Slamming my fist into the wall, I couldn't even describe how angry I was. All Cleo was guilty of was defending herself and her family, yet they could condemn every innocent person based on one person's actions.
The members of this pack were all innocent; their only crime was fighting back against the death sentence that had been unfairly given. It wasn't right, no matter what way you looked at it.
The council was supposed to uphold the laws, yet they were breaking their most sacred. Those born to special bloodlines were not to be harmed, yet here they were, doing just that. Committing the same acts they punished my mother for committing. Axel was born into one of the last fire element packs in existence, and they were ready to wipe him off the planet, all to save their own skins.
The council was stuck in the past, a place where change never happened. The problem with that was they never witnessed new things blossom, and if they did, they turned a blind eye, too scared to admit times had changed. Wolves were now no longer mated to just other wolves. The Moon Goddess embraced the changing tide and began to mate us with demons, witches, and even vampires. All species that once upon a time hated each other.
With each explosion that came from outside, I finally realised how I was to unite our worlds. As my mum had always said, everything, whether it be good or bad, happened for a reason. Cleo and I being fated was no coincidence, and only now do I believe my great-grandmother chose us for a reason. Both of us were born not only royalty but gods. Two of the most influential species fated to be together to ensure that the much-needed change could happen.
The council, all of them, needed to be eliminated. With them in power, the Moon Goddess's vision would never happen.
