Chapter Sixty-Seven Cleo's POV

Having explained Jake's situation as best as I could, I asked a nurse to help me get Roman into a wheelchair. His grandfather was currently in the ICU on life support, and there was no way Roman was well enough to walk. As we exited the lift, we were met with faces that lined the corridor leading to Jake's room. Holding my head high, I pushed my mate down the corridor where his fathers met us. Kissing Roman on the cheek, I turned to walk away, leaving his fathers to take him inside.

"Cleo, where are you going?" Hearing Axle's voice, I stopped and turned to face him.

"I'm going to get some air while you spend time as a family. It's all right; you need it."

"Your right, we do, but you're also a part of this family, Cleo. None of us would be here right now if it weren't for you. Angel wouldn't be able to say goodbye to her mate if it wasn't for you." Holding his hand out for me to take, I hesitated for a second before accepting.

As I took his hand, he yanked me towards him and hugged me. "Thank you." He whispered into my ear, and for the first time, I knew he meant it, and together the three of us walked into the hospital room.

Jake lay on the hospital bed, several machines attached to him and all beeping at once. I'd seen things like this on tv, but not in real life, and never did I want to. The whole thing was upsetting, which only gave me a glimpse into how Angel felt.

Angel was sitting in a chair beside her mate, her elbows resting on the side of the mattress as she held his hands in hers. Behind her stood another older couple that before today I'd only ever seen once before at Athena's funeral. From my understanding, they were Hector's parents.

Upon hearing the door click shut, Angel lifted her head, her eyes automatically locking with mine. Raising from her seat, she walked towards me, throwing her arms over my shoulders.

"Thank you, Cleo. Thank you for giving me this. I don't know what I'd done had I been unable to be by his side as he passed. You've given me the best gift."

"No offence, Queen Luna, but I wouldn't call this a gift. Your mate lies here because of a series of poor choices that I made. I will never forgive myself for the trouble I have caused your family and kingdom."

"But is it your fault? The council had sealed your fate long ago, and I'm sorry we hadn't done anything about it sooner. It's no excuse, Cleo, but I feared that by interfering, you would be doomed to the same fate as our beloved Athena. We all make poor choices; I know I did when it came to my daughters. But to be by the side of your love as they take their final breath before returning to the Moon Realm is indeed a gift. And it's one I could never thank you enough for." The heart monitor went haywire as she sat back in her seat before giving a flatline. Everyone bowed their heads for a two-minute silence per tradition and a sign of respect for the fallen King.

As the machines were taken away, we each left the room, allowing Angel to say her final goodbye. Watching as the light faded from her eyes, it was clear how much she loved him. One by one, those closest to Jake said their goodbyes, knowing that the next time they saw him would be as they sent him on his final journey. I watched from the window as Roman sat beside his grandfather; the guilt he felt flowing through our bond hurt my heart. He needed to accept that none of this was his fault and I would be there for him the entire time.

...

Two days later...

Today Roman was discharged, and I would finally be freed from hellfire. As far as we were concerned, the Elders were all dead, and any that survived didn't have the power to regain control. So once I was back to myself and the next few days were over, we could finally get on with our lives.

With the Elders gone, Henrik had come out of hiding and created a spell to rid me of the darkness and reunite my soul with the light. It was both painful and draining but worth it. Even if I was now plagued with every emotion I had suppressed while under the darkness's influence. I spent nearly twenty-four hours crying before finally leaving my room and facing my next challenge. Holding my daughter, whom we had finally given a name. Scarlett. A word that represents everything she will one day inherit.

I thought I was finally getting ahold of my emotions until the day of Daphne's funeral. It was small and quiet, with half the pack refusing to go, all because of a bad choice she had made. Though no matter what wrongs she had done, she had saved my daughter, and in some way, she had saved me.

"Cleo, I... I don't know what to say."

"Then say nothing. She had her whole life ahead of her, and now she's lying there in that box, all because of a war she didn't deserve to be involved in. She didn't get a chance at love, to grow old. So there isn't anything you can say is there. Nothing will make this pain go away."

"I'm sorry for your loss." Eric just lowered his head before walking away. I felt bad for what I said, but even though they had marked each other, they didn't have time to fall in love, not really.

Everyone had spent the last twenty-four hours offering their condolences. All the 'we are here for you if you need anything' and the 'you will get past this with time' sentences were beginning to get to me. None of these people here knew her. None of them had spent an ounce of time with her.

"Come, let's go home" Roman's arms wrapped around my waist, his face sitting in the crook of my neck as I continued to process everything. His own emotions are a bundled mess after the loss of Grandfather.

We owed Daphne and Jake everything. Because of the long-brewing war, my family and countless other innocent people had been destroyed. Hades was to blame, sure, but he wasn't the only one responsible. We all held a piece of the blame; our hands just weren't as tainted as his.
