Find me in your labyrinth (Stella and Jonathan) -
Chapter 1581
Chapter 1581
"It's like this all the time! Ever since he got into gambling, he's been stuck in this vicious cycle of betting and regretting. He genuinely regrets it when he does, but he just can't resist the pull of gambling. I've tried talking to him seriously, hoping he'd quit gambling so we could go back to our peaceful life. He'd always promise me, but it'd end up being a load of bull. After countless tries, I've realized that he's not going to change, not in
this lifetime."
"He's only staying put here now because he's broke. The moment he gets his hands on some cash, he'd be back at it." Emily lowered her head, choking up, "If I got together with Charlie, my dad would latch onto him like a leech. No matter how much money Charlie has, it'd never be enough for him. I'd rather break it off now than have to do it later out of resentment." She knew Charlie had feelings for her during their time together. But no amount of love could bear the weight of family drama. His family wouldn't accept her and her burdens would only make things worse, eventually warping their relationship. Estelle had seen people consumed by gambling. Jonathan had once taken her to a casino, but it wasn't her first rodeo. She'd spent over a month in casinos during missions, seeing gamblers lose everything, get humiliated, and even maimed. They seemed pitiful, but they'd throw themselves at the gambling table the moment they had money. It was mind-boggling. But now Emily and Charlie's relationship was over, she couldn't help but feel regretful, "Is there really no other way? I can help your dad find a job. Maybe that'd keep him from gambling."
"We've tried that before, but it didn't work. Don't trouble yourself." Emily took a deep breath, "Kya and I have made it through these past two years without Charlie, love isn't a necessity for me."
Estelle felt bad. Why did Emily have to shoulder everything by herself? She remembered Emily from the dessert shop, always optimistic and strong. But she'd been through so much over the years. Would she ever go back to her carefree self? Emily looked at Estelle with a light flickering in her eyes, "Don't tell Charlie. He must loathe me, hate me, so we can break up faster." Estelle nodded softly, "I understand." She might not be able to do much for Emily, but she'd respect her choice.
When Shawn brought Kya back, Estelle had already left. Emily took over Kya for her bath.
Shawn called out to Emily, "Your friend seems loaded. I noticed her clothes were really fancy. Could she help me find a job?"
"No!" Emily turned around, her tone icy, "You can stay here but you're not to ask my friends for any favors!"
Shawn laughed awkwardly, "Why so touchy? It's not like I'm borrowing money from her."
"You've borrowed money from my classmates, remember?" Emily responded coldly.
Shawn turned red, "I can't just sit around all day, so how about you fire Ms. Simmons and I'll take care of Kya? That way, you can save some money."
"No need. Ms. Simmons is great with kid!" Emily replied indifferently and went back to her room with Kya. Shawn watched Emily's retreating figure, his head hanging low.
