The fragrance of blooming roses was carried over by the wind. Scarlett walked once around the garden in which roses could be seen everywhere. Scarlett returned to the mansion and saw that Lucy was standing in the doorway, looking at her.

"Trevin planted all the flowers in there for his wife."

"How very romantic."

No wonder Mrs. Wilson had requested to be buried with Trevin in the last moments of her life.

"Ms. Reed, would you like some dessert?" Scarlett shook her head. "No, thanks. You may go where you're needed. I'm going back to get some rest."

Having taken an after-dinner walk, Scarlett returned to her room. This time she fell asleep very soon.

Night had fallen when she woke. Her room was pitch-dark. Scarlett turned on the light, picked up her cellphone and saw that it was something after 7 p.m. already. Alexis had called her at fiveish p.m.

Scarlett kneaded her temples and called Alexis back.

It was around 8 a m. in Jakesville. Alexis answered her phone very soon. "Lettie?" Scarlett smiled, "Yeah, it's me. Something happened?"

"No. I just wanted to ask you how things

went."

Scarlett let out a sigh, which was rather uncharacteristic of her. "She passed away last night. They held a funeral earlier today.

"I see. Well then, you should spend more time with Raymond. I'm going to get out of your hair."

Scarlett lifted her eyebrows. "Is there something you're not telling me?"

"Like I said, I prepared a surprise for you. I'll tell you when you get back!"

With that Alexis hung up.

Scarlett looked down at her cellphone, feeling slightly relieved.

It seemed to be a good thing.

Her mind was wandering when the room door was pushed open.

Scarlett thought it was Lucy. Not until she lifted her head did she find that the visitor was Chris.

She put down her cellphone and smiled at Chris, "You're a man of your word."

Chris walked over, stooped down, put his arms around her and said, "Yeah."

Scarlett twined her arms around his neck and stood up. "Is the dinner ready?"

"Yeah."

Chris slackened his hold slightly and carried her to her slippers to let her put them on before the two of them walked out of the room to have dinner.

Lucy made some Jakesville dishes and chicken soup.

Scarlett had just walked out of the room when she smelled the aroma of chicken soup. The dinner had been served, and Lucy had returned to her room on the ground floor. Scarlett and Chris were the only ones left in the dining room.
