Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 21
Katherine's
POV
A sad breath escaped my lips as I held the ruined dress in my hands. I have sent the dress to the dry cleaners, yet they have tried hard to have the red wine stain removed.
"I am really sorry Ms. King," the shop owner came and broke the news to me, "we have tried our best, yet, we couldn't save your dress..."
It was official, the dress was ruined... I thanked him, paid, and left.
I had the driver take me back to the boutique we visited the day before, and the sales representative spotted me the moment I walked in the door, she must have seen my depressed face and she rushed to my side. "What happened?" She asked, concerned, her eyes wide out of worry. Did I look that depressed?
I sighed and weakly smiled at her.
"Remember the girl you served yesterday?" I asked.
"Yes," she answered, "the one I sold the diamonds to?"
I nodded my head.
"Well, she accidentally spilled her wine on my dress..."
"Oh, heavens!" The sales representative gasped. She knew how pricey the dress was...
"I was hoping you would have a similar dress as the one I bought..."
"Ms. that was the last dress in that range..." she said, "I can order you one, but I am afraid it could take up until a month before it will arrive..."
"That's not going to help," I replied, "I need the dress by tonight..."
"I can maybe help you with an alternative dress, but nothing will match the exact dress cut and color..."
I let out a depressed breath.
"I was afraid you would say that..."
"Well, let us have a look..."
My phone rang, cutting the sales representative off, and I lifted my index finger, indicating that I wouldn't be long. She nodded her head and I answered my phone.
"It's me, Xavier," the familiar husky voice came through the receiver, "I am just checking in if you are ready for your big night..?"
If only he knew that I had nothing to wear to my party tonight...
"Hi, Xavier," I answered, trying to hide the panic in my voice, "I am just busy searching for a new dress. Erika had a little accident and she spilled her wine on mine..." I could hear Greyson mumbling something from the back, but I couldn't make out what.
"Kate," Xavier said, "go get your hair and makeup done, my driver will bring you something fabulous to wear..."
Wait what??
"But..."
"The dress is made to your size. If you don't like the dress, just return it to the driver and he will bring you something else..."
Was he some magician? Could he miraculously create dresses out of nothing? He doesn't even know what I like and dislike...
"How..?" I asked, but I already knew the answer to my question. Xavier must have taken my measurements on the date we slept together... and I turned crimson. "Don't worry love," he said, "just make sure you are home at three..."
"Okay-y-y, Xavier..." I answered, shocked, "uhm... thank you! You are a lifesaver..."
"No need to thank me yet..." he replied, "and Kate..."
"Yes, Xavier..." I answered, feeling overwhelmed, and tears burned behind my eyes.
"I will have the driver pick you up at seven..."
With that, Xavier cut the call, giving me no room to argue.
I turned my attention back to the sales representative and smiled at her.
"I guess you got yourself a dress then?" She asked and smiled.
"Seems so," I answered, wiping tears from my eyes.
"You are one lucky lady..!" She commented.
I thanked her and left the shop to go and do my nails at a close by spa.
Ten minutes before 3 pm, I got home.
Rose was standing in the0 foyer when I entered.
"Where have you been all day?" She asked like a concerned mother.
"Searching for a new dress?" I replied, aloof.
"And?" She asked, "Did you find anything?"
I shook my head and told her that I had been at the boutique and I couldn't find anything.
I knew the wine wasn't an accident, Erika did it on purpose... yet I hoped that I could have saved the dress and gotten the stain out.
"That's a pity..." she replied, "what are you going to wear now?"
"Not sure," I answered honestly, "I was hoping to know where I could find my mother's old dresses..."
Rose's face whitened before she spoke.
"I gave them to charity," she replied nervously.
"Why?" I asked, feeling angry that she didn't even consult me before she got rid of them.
"Well, you were missing and I didn't see the point in keeping them..." she answered, "no one would ever want to wear a dead woman's dress!"
"Mother!" Erika yelled from upstairs, cutting the conversation short, "Get your ass up in my room, I need some assistance!"
"Coming!" Rose answered, turned on her heels, and left in a hurry.
I growled annoyed, and started toward the stairs when the front doorbell rang.
I froze in my tracks, turned around, and jolted toward the door, cutting the butler off. The butler gave me a surprised look and took a step back.
"It's for me, don't worry, I will get it," I told him, "you can leave..."
He nodded his head and, without a word, turned on his heel and left.
My heart pounded in my chest... And I swallowed big breaths to calm my nerves.
Once my heart was more in control, I grabbed the front door handle and opened the door.
A smile crept to my lips when I recognized Xavier's regular driver standing by the door with a huge box, with two smaller boxes piled on top of one another, in his hands. "Hi," I greeted the driver, and he nodded his head.
"Mr. Black asked me to remind you about tonight's arrangements..." he said.
"I will be ready," I answered.
"Mr. Black also asked me to ensure you are happy with the contents he chose for you..."
I let the driver in and he followed me to my room. He placed the boxes on my bed and stepped away... waiting for my approval.
I carefully lifted the two boxes from the bigger box and removed the lid from the big box.
I gasped, and my eyes widened.
"Wow!" I said and turned to the driver, "You can advise Mr. Black that I am happy with the contents of the box..."
With that, the driver smiled, bowed his head, and left...
I couldn't help myself, and as soon as the door clicked shut behind him, I locked my bedroom door and rushed back to the boxes on my bed...
I felt like a kid, sitting around the Christmas tree, excited about opening and exploring the contents of the boxes...
At 4 pm, a knock sounded at my bedroom door, and I knew that the stylist had arrived.
"Coming!" I called from the washroom and got out of the bath.
I dried myself, wrapped my body in my fluffy pink robe, and headed to the door.
"Sam!" I gasped as soon as I opened the door, and a wide smile spread on the male's lips.
"Hi, Kate..." he said, and I opened the door even more, and gestured for Sam to enter.
Sam was my mother's best friend.
He was a well-known stylist and would come around occasionally to help my mother dress and do her makeup and hair.
"So, how are things?" He asked and lifted an eyebrow.
"Same old, same old," I answered, "how did you..."
"Alpha Xavier sent me," he answered and gave me a knowing look, "he doesn't trust anyone else around you..."
My face turned crimson... and shifted my gaze to the floor.
"I have never seen an Alpha wolf so crazy about someone... except maybe your folks..." he said.
"A human like me can't be mated to such a powerful Alpha wolf like him..." I commented and headed to my dressing table.
Sam sighed.
"Kate, you are just as much a wolf as any other..." he answered.
"Then why haven't I shifted as yet?" I snapped.
Sam quieted down behind me and I lifted my gaze to look at him in the mirror, his face blank, yet his eyes reflected as if he was reliving a memory.
"Sam?" I called, "Are you alright?"
He shook his head and smiled, "I am fine..."
I gave Same a wary look.
"Why do I have a feeling that you know something?"
He let out a breath and took a seat on my bed, looking tired.
"Your mother and I were best friends when we were younger..." he said.
"That I know," I answered.
"What you don't know is that your parents were not able to conceive naturally..."
"Wait, are you telling me I am adopted?" I gasped, surprised.
A tender smile played on Sam's lips, yet he shook his head, no.
"You are your parents' daughter..." he answered tenderly, "I can confirm it, I was there when your mother gave birth to you... and you looked like your father..."
"Then how did my mother fall pregnant then?" I asked.
"Rumor has it that your parents made a deal with the Goddess... and the Goddess created you from a drop of her blood..." Sam said.
"... what was the catch?" I asked.
Sam came upright and took a few steps toward me, picked up my brush, and started to brush through my hair.
"... your mother never told me..." he answered, "but I could see that whatever they negotiated for having you, was worth every second of it... I have never seen a couple of wolves love a pup as much as they loved you..." My heart warmed at his words, yet it only created more and more questions.
Why did they send me away?
Why did they keep me away from the pack?
I internally sighed and made a promise to get to the bottom of the whole mystery after the party...
The rest of our conversations were light and easily flowing.
Just after 6 pm, Sam finished off my makeup and hair.
I made him promise to visit more often and he left.
I quickly looked at the time, noticed that it was almost time for Xavier's driver to pick me up, and opened the huge box retrieving the dress that took my breath away...
