Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 55
Katherine's
POV
When I got back home, the atmosphere inside my home was strange and depressing. The omegas quickly turned their heads and hurried by, subconsciously avoiding me.
I instantly understood that John had said something when he came back, and there must be something about to happen.
Sure enough, just as I was about to turn and head toward my room, John suddenly appeared from his study, looking a bit irritated and angry.
"Where have you been all night?" He growled at me.
"Evening uncle," I greeted, smiled, and shifted my head to the side, "I have gone out to dinner with Xavier."
John's face suddenly became calmer.
"Oh, I see," he said, "just keep in mind that now that you have taken over as CEO of the group, people will gossip when they see you wandering the streets this late!" "Uncle Xavier and I are engaged," I stated. "Am I not allowed to go out and have something to eat with my fiance?"
I emphasized our relationship, watching John's face.
"No!" He answered, "You should now be focusing on company affairs. All the directors of the company are now counting on you!" It seemed like John was jealous that the directors liked me more than him. My mind raced back to today's board meeting.
The board of directors made it clear that they had great expectations for me. It obviously made John depressed and bitter.
I smiled and was about to say something when Xavier suddenly walked in.
"Kate, you left your purse behind," he said.
As soon as Erika heard Xavier's voice, she ran out of her room.
"Is that Xavier's voice I hear?" She asked and rushed down the stairs.
John, who was already holding his pose, gave Erika a death glare as soon as she came into view, and she instantly backed off.
"Thank you for bringing my purse," I said a bit frostily. I couldn't get Xavier's stern expression and cold voice out of my head. I felt sad and miserable, and I regretted saying those words. I didn't mean it the way it sounded. "Why are you all standing here?" Xavier asked, and I noticed a slur in his speech. He looked at everyone, confused, and waited for an answer.
When no one answered fast enough, Xavier snaked his arm protectively around my waist and pulled me closer to him.
A faint smell of alcohol hit my nostrils, and I immediately searched for Xavier's gaze.
As expected, Xavier's eyes were red.
Was Xavier drunk?
How much did he drink?
Did he down a bottle after I left?
My gaze landed on Erika, who was licking her lips as she eyed Xavier, and a bit of anger and jealousy boiled inside of me.
"Alpha Xavier, you are a busy man, and now that you have delivered this forgetful princess' purse, why didn't you just send someone else to bring it to Kate?" John asked, seemingly in a better mood. Xavier's eyes had been pinned on me from the second he walked in.
John shifted his gaze to the side when Xavier didn't answer, and suddenly his whole face lit up.
Sh*t! He knows Xavier is drunk.
"Somebody help!" John yelled, "Alpha Xavier needs to rest in the guest room!"
None of the Omega servants came to John's rescue; they all hid. Whatever he said to them must have upset them.
John smiled hypocritically and pretended to be angry.
"Oh, that is so typical!" He acted angrily, saying, "When you don't need people, they are available; when you do need someone, you can't find anyone available."
A sly smile formed on John's face, and he waved his hand to Erika, standing at the end of the stairs.
"Erika, get the guest room ready for Alpha Xavier so that he can rest!"
Erika nodded her head, excused herself, and went to the guest room without arguing.
Xavier held onto me, and I could feel his eyes move around my breast.
He cocked an eyebrow at me and licked his lips.
My face flushed crimson, and I suddenly felt embarrassed by his lustful look.
"Alpha Xavier, the guest room is ready. You are welcome to stay the night and get some rest."
John stepped closer, threw Xavier's arm around his shoulders, and helped him to the guest room, leaving me standing at the entrance confused.
I slowly climbed the stairs, following John down to the guest room.
"Alpha Xavier," John said as he helped Xavier into the bed. "Get some rest; the Omega servants will bring you some water later."
Then he hurried to the door and blocked me off.
"Alpha Xavier is drunk," he stated, glaring at me. "You must have done or said something to have made the Alpha unhappy when you were out to dinner."
I internally rolled my eyes at John and looked at Xavier sitting on the bed.
If Xavier got drunk on purpose just because of what I said, he was acting childish.
I didn't mean it the way it sounded.
Why was he acting like that anyway? We still had a contract in place, and I was just keeping to the original agreement.
"You shouldn't give Alpha Xavier any trouble!" John continued.
"No, I..." I wanted to defend myself, but Xavier suddenly growled from his bed.
I just glared at Xavier, confused.
"He will be alright, don't worry," John said, "in a few hours, and a good night's rest will have him all sober up and back to normal."
John gave me a concerned look.
"You should go freshen up," he said, and he searched my gaze. "Don't worry, no one will go into this room, and everything will be fine when Alpha Xavier wakes up."
I gave John a nod of my head and headed back to my room. I couldn't do much about the fact that Xavier was drunk; I could just hope that he would sober up and forgive me.
Back in my room, I took a hot bath. The steam filled the bathroom, making the area look haunted.
I got into the piping hot water and laid back and relaxed.
About half an hour later, I felt better. I quickly washed myself, rinsed, and got out of the bathtub.
I stood before the mirror and looked at myself. The same dark circles were back, and I brushed my fingertips over the purple marks.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. I grabbed my robe, threw it on, and rushed to the door.
Surprisingly, when I opened the door, there was no one outside.
I peeked my head out of my room, finding my home extremely quiet.
I shook my head. I must have imagined hearing the knock.
I closed the door and turned back to the bathroom. Yet again, just as I was about to enter the bathroom, there was a second knock on the door.
I was certain that I heard it this time. Yet again, I rushed to the door, finding no one outside.
What the hell was going on?
My mind rushed to an article that appeared in the newspaper yesterday. It was about a man who had hanged himself, but after the police investigated, they found out that it was a murderer who used this technique to disguise the murder as a suicide after killing the man. The murderer was still at large, and law enforcement warned the public to be careful.
John had recently added more security around our home.
"This is not a murderer looking for the next target!" My conscious yelled, "Something else was going on!"
Why was the mansion dead quiet?
"Hello? Anybody?" I called and started walking down the corridor.
I couldn't find anyone after I had walked through most of the area.
I checked the front door, which was locked, and I returned to my bedroom.
As I went down the corridor, a woman called behind me, and my anxiety spiked and my nerves instantly tightened.
I didn't think much, except to run to my room without looking back.
When I passed the guest room where Xavier was resting, I could hear Erika's voice coming from inside.
"Alpha Xavier," Erika moaned, his name, "I knew you liked me..."
My heart dropped to the ground, and I could see it breaking into a million odd pieces.
"Oh, Alpha Xavier, please don't stop."
A burst of anger rushed through me, and I instantly forgot about what I was running from and clenched my fists.
"Xavier," Erika moaned again, "don't stop!"
"Sh*t!" Erika suddenly yelled out surprised, followed by the sound of the bedboard cracking. Tears burned behind my eyelids, and my sight became blurry as soon as they spilled over.
"We are just partners," I reminded myself, "we are nothing more..."
Xavier just proved to me that everything he said was an act! He doesn't love me, as he stated!
I wiped the tears from my face and slowly moved toward my room.
The guest room door flew open, and I turned to see Xavier standing in the doorway, still a bit intoxicated.
His shirt's buttons were undone, revealing his perfectly crafted chest, yet I turned around and rushed toward my room.
"Kate..." Xavier said, the intensity in his voice so pure that it made me freeze in my spot.
I was afraid to look back, for fear that seeing him covered in lipstick marks would ruin the love I had for him in my heart.
"Kate," he called again.
I sighed, shook my head, and ignored him. I should have known that Erika would find a way into Xavier's bed.
I started forward again, and Xavier grabbed my arm and pulled me to his chest, holding onto me for dear life.
I could still smell the alcohol on him, and he still looked a bit intoxicated, yet he knew who I was.
We quickly walked to my room, and as soon as we entered my room, Xavier turned and went into the bathroom and locked himself inside.
When I heard the sound of bathwater being drawn inside the bathroom, I felt a bit relieved.
Yelling coming from downstairs pulled my attention, so I rushed to my bedroom door and opened it just enough to be able to hear what was going on.
I could hear John, Rose, and Erika in the foyer. John sounded pissed, and Erika was a bit bewildered and concerned.
What the hell happened? What did I miss?
"How the f*ck could you just let him run off?" John roared, "I made sure to drug him. Do you know how limited those opportunities are?"
Was Xavier drugged? But how?
That explained...
My mind raced at a million miles per hour. Did John set us up at the restaurant?
My gaze turned toward the bathroom, hearing the water still running.
"That's not my fault!" Erika yelled, "I can't help that he ran away!"
"Erika," Rose whispered, "did you get the pictures?"
"No," she answered, "he woke up before I could take my clothes off and threw me off the bed. He then ran out! Look, I still have the bump on my head as proof!"
"It's useless!" John roared, and the sound of a door slamming followed.
"Don't worry about your father," Rose said. "Let's have a look at your wound."
"Father, don't worry about me!" Erika roared, "You two forced me to endure Kate. I have had enough!"
Silence followed before Rose spoke again.
"It's so late, Erika. Where are you going?"
After a while, it was quiet, and I assumed that Rose might have gone to John to calm him down. I opened my bedroom door and quickly ran to the guest room. The door stood open, and the bed was slightly messy. Yet what caught my attention was the glass next to the bed.
I picked up the glass and looked at the contents.
I knew Xavier had been given water, but what bothered me was the white residue at the bottom of the glass.
I shook my head.
Will this ever stop?
It seems that they haven't given up on their plan yet.
As long as Xavier and I were involved, they would seize every opportunity to get Xavier attached to Erika.
What were they planning to do next?
