His Mute Luna
Chapter 10

June

My whole time out here had been so peaceful, this was exactly what I needed. No hassle or questions, just the quiet, my work and the gentle sounds of everything around. Yet, that excitement I had been feeling the last few hours hadn’t diminished, it was growing, like something profound was about to happen.

It was the ragged breathing I heard first, before the footsteps, dampened by the thick vegetation. I instinctively glanced up, feeling a deep pull from within and also an apprehension that someone was approaching me.

And to my surprise it was none other than Alpha Morgan!

Was this some bizarre magic? Had the topic of him being mentioned so many times today made him miraculously appear?

My hand had, on instinct, moved to the pocket knife in my waistband holder that I had grabbed out of the work’s truck. It wasn’t really for use as a weapon, it was just a handy tool for using out in the field.

He came to a gradual stop a few meters in front of me, but did nothing else.

Why was he just staring at me?

Why was he out here?

…And when the f**k did he fill out like this?!

The young, cute boy I remember seeing those couple of times almost a decade ago was replaced by the huge, very broad and ridiculously handsome man standing in front of me.

I recalled Mati’s words from this morning, “was Alpha Morgan still yummy?”

Put simply, he was a whole snack and I was suddenly starving.

But he did have those same cute auburn curls, a little shorter on the sides with the curls messily hanging over his forehead. And those hauntingly almost white eyes were even more captivating. Did they seem to actually sparkle or was I just seeing things?

He was still heaving for breath as he approached me. Had he run all the way here? There weren’t really any homes or businesses anywhere around this site, so where the hell had he come from? I realised how much I had to crane my neck to keep looking into those eyes, it wasn’t too often I had to look up to someone like this.

The closer he came, the stronger the pleasant smell of tree bark grew too. Was that really from him? It reminded me of the bakery and why I found it so calming there. Those arms of his would feel really nice wrapped around me in reality.

“Hey…” he started and after a few seconds of silence he continued, as though he had no clue what to say. “…I’m Morgan. I can’t believe I actually found you,” he laughed a little and the sound was so deep but soft, I wanted to hear it again, forever.

A small smile tugged at my lips. It was adorable he thought he needed to introduce himself like I wouldn’t know his name. I might not have involved myself in pack business for a good few years, but even I knew who he was. He didn’t exactly blend in either.

The little trance I was in, just adoring all the small details of his wonderfully masculine face from his little dimples to the cute cleft in his chin, was abruptly ruined by a truck hurtling towards us.

My brother quickly exited, leaving Tipper in the front bouncing around at the excitement happening.

Why were all these wolves suddenly fixated on me?!

Not that I minded Morgan’s attention right now. And now that he had turned to stand in front of me protectively – an action that had me internally swooning – I had a clear view of his broad, muscular back. Bea was definitely right about his a*s. Nevermind rocks, you could crush boulders on that thing. Like everything else about him, it looked firm and muscular. I realised my hand was still on the knife in its holder, clearly I wasn’t in any danger. I had been so engrossed in checking the Alpha out I had sort of just frozen in place. I also realised the state I was in too; a little damp from collecting samples from the river, a little muddy…also from collecting samples, my hair was in a messy bun and I was in leg waders. I looked like a hobo gone fishing… wait, why did I care so much what I looked like right now anyway?

“I probably broke every speed limit in the pack to get here…but Morgan, you took off before I could say anything!”

“Tom, what the hell is going on? Did you send him here?” I signed.

“It’s ok June. I know this is gonna sound nuts…but you’re his mate,” he replied back, both verbally and in sign language.

“Morgan, my sister can’t speak. That’s what I was trying to tell you before.”

I was his what?!

How was that even possible?!

It wasn’t.

I was a human. There was nothing for his wolf spirit to attach to.

And even if it was possible…to be his mate, an Alpha leader to the pack…I couldn’t be Luna?! Was the moon goddess out of her tree?!

A human Luna wasn’t a thing, especially a mute one!

It was rare that I was self-conscious about my inability to speak. I was a little uncomfortable with people I wasn’t familiar with seeing my scars, but that was just because I hated the stares.

He was going to reject me…he’d never want someone like me as a mate.

I had heard of rejections. It was rare as the bond between wolves usually won out…but this was different entirely.

I had never hyperventilated in my life but it didn’t stop the rapid intake of oxygen that seemed to be nonexistent currently. When did I go so suddenly from utter disbelief of the bond, to outright grief at the prospect of losing it?

It was at that moment my legs started to feel like jelly and a pair of incredibly strong and stable arms slipped around me immediately for support. In an instant, a thrumming heat flared through my skin where our bodies made contact. It was like a rippling warmth, tingling my senses. My eyes snapped up to his as my lips parted in a silent gasp.

I never thought I would ever experience the ‘tingles’ that werewolves often spoke about with their mates, but this had to be them.

It was true, I was his mate…

And from the look of awe on his face, rejection was the furthest thing from his mind.

“Hey, it’s ok…I don’t understand any of this either. But I do know I want you,” he confessed, an earnest expression in his eyes.

He was so close; I could feel how his breath fanned my face, how his eyes flickered down to my lips, how we both moved in… only to be interrupted by a loud cough that broke the two of us apart.

I glared at the source to see Tom looking both a little embarrassed and wearing a smirk.

Oh hell! I almost made out with the future Alpha in front of my brother. I wasn’t much of a prude, but this was a little much even for me.

“I should probably get out of here…I’m really happy for you June, both of you,” he said with a sad smile.

I felt a pang of guilt at his expression.

Even though his wolf couldn’t break through, he had still hoped he’d be able to find his mate. I wasn’t a werewolf and I had just kind of stolen his dream, in front of him.

“I’m sorry, I feel like I’ve taken something from you,” I signed.

“You haven’t…my mate’s out there. We’ll be together one day,” he replied in silence.

“Sooo…I take it, you won’t want that guard now for tomorrow?” He smirked, switching back to speaking again.

I looked up to Morgan, who was still staring at me with silent adoration and shook my head. That made him smile wide, flashing me that cute, crooked grin that made his dimples deepen, just like I remembered but much more mature now.

Tom said his goodbyes, leaving the two of us alone. Which felt a little daunting. Would he know sign language? The Gamma had surprised me. Maybe my mate would too?

“So, do you know any sign language?” I asked hopefully.

But the blank expression on his face was answer enough.

This could get complicated.
