Chapter 34

I dropped the book I was reading back on the table. What Thane had said yesterday refused to leave my mind. I couldn't possibly believe that they weren't my parents.

For as long as I remembered, I had always been with them. After Thane's bombshell, I wanted to go see them and ask them about it but he refused. Rather, they would be coming here today so I could find out the truth. Right now, I wondered if I really wanted to find out the truth, if my heart could take it. What if they really weren't my parents? Who are my real parents. Did they want me?

I sighed in frustration and laid my head on the table. Damia appeared from behind one of the shelves, her head bowed as usual.

"Your parents are here" I hurried out of the library quickly, down the stairs and to the entrance. My parents were stepping out of the car just as I got there. I ran into their arms, hugging them tightly.

"Let's take this upstairs" I held my mother's hands tightly as we ascended the stairs and into the study. Thane pulled me with him and I settled on his legs.

"My king, you sent for us abruptly. Is there a problem?" my papa asked.

"It's about Esmeralda" I caught their eyes and smiled weakly.

"You both are werewolves but she's a half-breed. You're not her real parents"

"We might not have given birth to her, but she's our daughter" my mum spoke in anger. My father held her hands and pulled her back.

"It's true she's not our real daughter. But we've loved and cared for her like we would do our own"

"That's not the issue. Do you know who her real parents are?"

My mama shook her head. "A woman brought her and asked me to hold her daughter for a minute while she went to get supplies. I had never seen her before but I wanted to help her. She never came back" tears ran down her face. I stood up from Thane's legs and went over to her, hugging her tightly.

"Continue"

"I think that's enough" I said. The story shows that I was abandoned. My mother didn't want me. She dropped me off in the hands of a stranger and took off. I didn't want to know anymore.

My mama shook her head. "Please let me finish. I want you to know the whole truth" I didn't say anything and she continued.

"My mate and I had been mated for a long while with no pups. When Esme was dropped with me, I felt joy. I finally felt what it was like to hold a child. I didn't want to let go. After waiting for a couple of days and the woman never showed up, I pleaded with my mate to let us change sections. I didn't want the woman to come back looking for her baby, so we left" I didn't want to hear anymore.

I stood up immediately and rushed out of the door. I ran to my room and shut my doors. I felt conflicted. What if my real mother came back searching. I wanted to be angry that mama ran away with me. That she denied me the possible chance of being with my real mother. The door opened and Thane came inside. We didn't say a word to each other as he pulled me into his arms, caressing my hair. We sat in silence as my mind kept on spinning.

"She wants to talk to you"

"I don't want to talk now. But I can't keep pushing it" there was a knock on the door and he called the person in. Mama looked nervous. Wringing her fingers as she looked at the floor.

Thane kissed me and stood up. "I'll give you some privacy" he gave mama a look and walked out. She smiled nervously and approached the bed cautiously.

"I know you probably don't want to see me now and you have a lot of colorful things to say about me. But I just want to say I'm sorry."

"Why didn't you tell me when I was old enough"

"I didn't want to lose you. I didn't want you to go looking for her and leaving me behind"

"I wouldn't have left you"

"Maybe not. I wasn't thinking and I was selfish. It's why I never wanted you to leave our section. But when you were chosen, I couldn't keep you from going. I knew the truth was going to come out soon but I just kept hoping it wouldn't. I'm really sorry"

"I want to be angry at you but I can't. You loved me and cared for me up until now. You've been the only mother I've known, blood doesn't matter. I love you and papa and that will never change" she hugged me tightly and sobbed. I rubbed her back in comfort and tried not to cry too.

She pulled back and cleaned her tears. "Would you like to look for her?"

I shrugged. "It's been a long time and the chances of finding her is slim. I don't know what I'll find out about her. I don't want to be hurt by the knowledge" she nodded in understanding.

A loud commotion interrupted our conversation. I rushed to the window and saw some people downstairs. I rushed out of the room and downstairs to the entrance, with mama running behind me.

The guards held a man pinned to the ground with silver chains. He struggled but they used brute force to hold him down.

"What is going on?" Nobody answered me. Thane walked in with Valdus and Noir behind him.

"My king. We found her" Her? The head was pulled up and I recognized the face. It was the woman from the forest. She had cuts in her arms and blood stained her makeshift dress. Mama gasped behind me. "It's you" I looked at mama. She knew her?

"You know her?" Thane asked with disgust dripping from his tone. Mama nodded.

"It's her. Your mother"
