It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 17
Malcolm entered the Evans family mansion on Saturday evening at exactly 7 p.m. As he expected, Wilma was waiting for him in the living room. There was also Howell, whom she had invited to dinner. Malcolm gave the woman standing next to them a cold look. If he remembers correctly, she was Howell’s youngest granddaughter, and Wilma had chosen her to be the mother of the next heir of the Evans family.
“Grandma,” Malcolm greeted flatly.
“I’m glad you’re here. We were waiting to have dinner with you. Come, sit down. Holly, ask the servants to bring the meal. » With a smile, Wilma nodded to the middle-aged woman next to her.
” Yes Madam. » Before entering the kitchen to prepare dinner, their servant, Holly Wang, gave him a respectful nod.
Even after sitting down at the table, Malcolm didn’t say a word. He quietly listened to Wilma and Howell talk about their past. Howell was a very good friend of the Evans family, having worked for them for a long time. In fact, he had worked for them since he was young. Wilma had been in charge of the Evans Group since Malcolm’s grandfather Chuck died in a car accident. As the other members of the Evans family fought for control of the company in such a crucial time, she put a lot of effort into keeping the company from collapsing. Howell was the only one who helped her stabilize the business without any hesitation.
“Malcolm, you are thirty-three years old now. When will you give me a great-grandson to cherish? » Wilma changed the subject, focusing on Malcolm’s life.
“You better ask Enoch, Grandma. He probably already has a bunch of illegitimate children. You don’t have to worry about not having any great-grandson at all! » Malcolm skillfully dodged his attack.
“Well, Enoch is still a mischievous child. I heard you sent him to the Middle East to sign a contract. Is it true? asked Wilma coldly.
Malcolm wasn’t the type of man to let someone lead him around. That was why he was able to dodge her questions so easily. There was no way he hadn’t guessed what Wilma was going with. He was thirty-three years old, and he only had two years left before he turned thirty-five. It was the nightmare age from which no male elder of each generation in Evans’ family had ever escaped.
” Yes, it’s true. I wanted him to go out and get some experience. I made it so he would act like a twenty-eight year old man rather than an eighteen year old boy. » Malcolm frowned and looked at her indifferently while taking a sip of red wine.
“Malcolm, I don’t care about your love life, but you can’t ignore your obligations to your family. Your companions are not presentable, they are certainly not suitable enough for you. My daughter-in-law must be like Susan here. » Wilma had to bring their conversation back on track because she could no longer let her grandson act so arrogant. After all, they had little time left.
She was determined to end the Evans family nightmare on her own.
“Wilma, Malcolm just got back. Let’s eat before we talk about such important matters,” Howell said, breaking the awkwardness around the table.
Even though it was a large table, there were only four people sitting around it. Wilma sits in the middle, with Malcolm to her left and Howell and Susan to her right. The dining room had become so quiet that even a needle dropped on the floor could be heard. And it was clear that Malcolm did not want to take part in such conversations with his grandmother. Lowering his head, he began to eat.
“Howell, we are both very old now. I feel like even when I go for a simple walk, the bones in my body are falling apart. I have so much pain all over my body. Why don’t you join me for a cup of tea? We haven’t talked in a long time,” Wilma said with a sigh, looking at Howell.
“You’re right,” Howell remarked, putting down his chopsticks, “It’s been a long time since we had a cup of tea together, and I miss having tea with you. »
“Holly, help me walk to the garden.” Let’s leave the young people alone. » Wilma then stood up, and Holly followed to help her.
Howell nodded, leaving his seat and heading out to the garden with her.
Malcolm fixed his gaze on his grandmother, whose intentions he recognized, but he said nothing to her. Susan clenched and released her fists, sweat in her palms, and she seemed nervous and uncomfortable. She was actually a little afraid of being alone with a man like Malcolm.
” Birthday? Malcolm asked with a sudden chuckle.
He could clearly see that Susan was nervous. After all, few people could be calm in front of him. One was the woman who stole his heart and the other was Lucia, who kept trying to escape. Suddenly, a delicate woman appeared in his mind. He hadn’t thought about her since Lucia came into his life. This woman was like his reflection. She had stolen his heart before disappearing from the world without a trace. Thinking of her, a hint of coldness flashed through Malcolm’s eyes.
” What? Susan asked awkwardly, not knowing what he meant.
” Your birthday? Malcolm repeated in a gentle tone, which could easily relieve people of their embarrassment.
“September 9th,” Susan replied immediately. However, she didn’t understand why he asked her such a question.
“September 9th, huh? “, thought Malcolm. He then glanced at Wilma and Howell, who were drinking tea in the garden. But his look was expressionless. There was only a slight smile on his lips, difficult to perceive.
He understood that Wilma was still focused on finding a wife for him who was born on the right day. She seemed to think that the rumors outside were just mere gossip. Wilma, who had always been calm, began to panic now that her eldest grandson was thirty-three years old. “Grandma, how can you be so agitated after being so calm all your life? »
After glancing at Malcolm, Susan continued to look at Wilma and Howell, who were having tea in the garden, swallowing her words nervously.
The man in front of her made her uncomfortable. Howell had spoken rudely to him about the Evans family. As a result, she knew that Malcolm would have to have a child before he was thirty-five. She had no idea why that was the case, but she knew that she had been in love with Malcolm for a long time. She had feelings for him for so long that she no longer remembers how long she had feelings for him.
She had undergone rigorous training at a Japanese marriage school to become the ideal bride. She knew she would be happy even if it meant she was just an accessory, not his lover. Sometimes even a woman’s unshakable pride turns to dust in front of the man she loves.
” Oh? So you understand what my grandmother wants? Malcolm asked softly, noticing the hesitation in her eyes.
” Yes, I know. And I’m ready to do it,” Susan replied resolutely.
A servant came into the dining room with dessert for Susan and coffee for Malcolm. After drinking just a sip of coffee, Malcolm gracefully set the cup down.
“So you agree, huh?” But what makes you fit to give birth to the next heir of the Evans family? » Susan felt like she had been pushed to hell from heaven after his initial remarks made her optimistic.
The fork she was holding fell onto the tiles when she started shaking. “Grandpa said there would be no problem. He said that even if Malcolm didn’t like me, my birthday was enough to get me into the Evans family. What was wrong? » Choking back tears, Susan tried to appear strong.
The sound of the fork falling to the ground also shocked Wilma and Howell. With Holly’s help, Wilma entered the house, and Howell followed her.
Malcolm remained calm as always, crossing his legs and casually resting his hand on his knee. His eyes were cold as he looked at the scene before him.
“What happened, Susan?” Wilma asked worriedly before turning to her grandson. “Did Malcolm say something rude?” You can be honest with me, and I’ll help you teach him a lesson. » There was a hint of fury in Wilma’s voice.
Not knowing how to respond, Susan turned to Malcolm and her grandfather. She rubbed her palms nervously. Malcolm gave the woman in front of him a cold look before standing up, putting his clothes away and turning to his grandmother, who was standing aside.
“Grandma, stop trying to use your dirty tricks on me. I don’t want anything like this to happen again. » Malcolm then left the villa without looking back.
“Malcolm…” Wilma called out to him anxiously, but that didn’t stop him at all.
She glanced at the coffee on the table which had gotten cold in the meantime. Why, after the doctor promised him that it was a powerful medicine that would put anyone to sleep as soon as they took it, did it have no effect on Malcolm?
She obviously knew that her grandson would not just lie obediently with Susan. After all, hoping for such a thing was just pure hope on his part. This was why she had to go to such lengths for Malcolm to produce an heir for the Evans family. She figured that once he passed out, she could harvest his s***m and use artificial insemination to place it in the uterus of a suitable woman. And she felt that Susan was the perfect choice, because she even had the right birth date.
Although she knew it wouldn’t guarantee her success, she was willing to go through with it if it meant the family’s nightmare would end. Wilma was convinced that once the heir was born, they would never have to experience the tragic thing that had happened to the previous generation.
As long as the mother was stable, the child would be born without problems. Even if Malcolm objected, he would still have to marry the mother of his child out of responsibility to his family.
Although this was an extreme measure, it was the only possible option at the moment. Two years may seem like a long time, but it goes by quickly. Wilma was too old to wait any longer, and she couldn’t bear the thought of failing. If she failed, she would be ashamed to face the ancestors of the Evans family after her death.
A handkerchief on the table, stained by coffee, caught his eye. Looking at him, his expression darkened. “Malcolm must have sensed something was wrong. He probably spat out the coffee as soon as he took a sip. » Wilma knew it would be difficult to find a similar opportunity again.
“Wilma, could it be because of Lucia Garcia, who is part of the gossip? » Howell told him about Lucia as if it had just crossed his mind.
“Lucia?” » Wilma was dazed.
” Yes. Why did Malcolm appear so openly in front of the media with her? Did something happen between them? Or is there some kind of secret between them that we don’t know about? asked Howell.
“Investigate this woman’s background,” Wilma told him.
” All right. Howell was more than willing to research Lucia.
“If she is a suitable woman, then I can consider accepting her.” » As Wilma sighed, she looked much older than she is.
” I see. » Howell nodded with a devilish look in his eyes. He wouldn’t let a girl take away everything he had hoped to acquire. Otherwise, all those years he spent planning would be in vain.
Susan, who always gets ignored, reluctantly clenched her fists. Of course, she knew about the rumors going around town. “How can a dissolute woman like Lucia attract Malcolm? Certainly not! Malcolm will come to me eventually. »
