It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 44
The atmosphere in the Evans family residence was cold and icy. This was not because there were few people living in the residence, but because of the tense atmosphere. It was very rare for Malcolm and Enoch to be seen in the residence simultaneously. Wilma’s lips formed a straight line and her eyes wrinkled into a morose expression, which made her appear older than she really was.
The desperate tone of Enoch’s voice echoed in his mind. She had a hard time accepting what she had just heard.
“Grandma, while Howell was traveling in Egypt, he was killed in a local terrorist attack. His body was brought back and returned to his family for his funeral. »
Wilma, who was always known as an introverted, calm and elegant woman, suddenly lost her temper. She struggled to keep her balance and felt dizzy, but luckily a servant stepped forward just in time to support her weight and seat her in a chair before she fell to the ground.
“Enoch, tell me it’s not true. » Wilma’s voice carried an echo of despair until Enoch could read it in her tear-filled eyes.
Enoch looked down at the ground and shook his head to dismiss his hopes. Wilma turned her anguished gaze to Malcolm, who seemed strangely calm, and who also said nothing to give her false hope. Wilma let out a sigh and resigned herself to the sad reality. Just as if all her strength had been sucked away, she stared at the void in the distance, without any movement.
” Grandmother? » Enoch called to her, but she didn’t respond.
“Enoch, let’s give Grandma some time,” Malcolm said with some indifference.
“Grandma, we’ll be back in a few days,” Malcolm said to his grandmother before turning to the servants. “Take good care of my grandmother. If anything happens to her, I will hold you all responsible. »
“Yes, sir,” they all responded in unison, very frightened.
After taking a good look at Wilma, Malcolm left the residence. Enoch joined him soon after. Wilma dismissed the servants as soon as she regained her composure, then she sat quietly in the greenhouse, immersed in deep meditation. It seemed like she was trying to come to terms with the harsh reality of life.
“Howell, I’m sorry we couldn’t see each other one last time,” Wilma whispered into the void.
But the only thing she saw were the beautiful flowers swaying in the wind.
Wilma’s original last name was Lopez. The Lopez family once was known as the most educated family who led a well-off life in S city, a few decades ago. Howell was from the Fu family, which was also a very wealthy family. Their wealth was enough to keep their family members rich throughout their lives. Since the two families were on good terms, the friendship between Howell and Wilma blossomed into love. Indeed, both had already committed to marrying privately.
However, destiny had other plans for them. Following the ongoing civil war in S City, the Fu family was forced to move out of the city and live elsewhere in solitude. Having lived a life of ease in his early years, Howell couldn’t bear to set foot in S City again after his family lost everything.
At the same time, in the Lopez family, most of its members were sent to prison by the revolutionary rebels because of the propaganda materials they collected privately. Most of them died under torture in prison. Wilma was lucky to escape this disaster, but she had to fend for herself to get from one place to another.
In the meantime, Howell and Wilma have lost contact with each other.
They were only eighteen years old when they were taken away from their homes.
However, fate found other ways to bring them together again. After the fall of the Fu family, Howell was quickly recruited by Chuck Evans, the famous business tycoon, for his extraordinary business talent. Chuck had his first son at the age of thirty-five and celebrated by throwing a lavish banquet. As his favorite employee, Howell also attended the banquet.
It was on this occasion that Howell found Wilma. Unfortunately, she had already married Chuck and changed her last name to Evans by this time. Howell’s excitement at that moment turned into indulgence, and all the unsaid things he had kept to himself showed clearly in his eyes. Wilma burst into tears as soon as she saw Howell again, but their relationship was beyond repair. They were no longer what they had been before.
They were twenty-eight years old that year.
Howell had also married and had children of his own, while Wilma assumed her role as Mrs. Evans and gave birth to a son. Yet, it seemed that fate was not yet done with the two of them. It might be too late for both of them, but there might still be a chance.
When Chuck turned forty, the Evans family had already become one of the most influential families in the country. The price to pay for such esteem was that they had made countless competitors and enemies. One of these days, while Chuck was traveling overseas on business, he was unexpectedly announced as having died of a heart attack. But the real reason for his death was that he was murdered by his enemy. Without Chuck to take care of the family business, the Evans family was on the verge of collapse, leaving only Wilma and her son, who was still very young, and Chuck’s mother.
In complete despair, Wilma had to take over the business in which she had never been involved. She had to hide her tenderness behind a facade of firmness and determination to tip the scales in her favor. So the Evans family got back on track. Howell had contributed greatly to its success. Instead of rubbing salt in the wound, he silently helped Wilma every step of the way. And within two years, they managed to bring the Evans family back to the forefront of the world.
That year they both turned thirty-five.
At that time, it seemed that everything was possible and that hope was reborn. However, that same year, Chuck’s mother died. But before she died, she spoke to Wilma privately and told her the Evans family secret. On her deathbed, Wilma’s stepmother held her hand and told her she would live to see the day the Evans family nightmare ended. She also made Wilma swear that she would never leave the Evans family behind. Wilma had sworn with tears in her eyes, even though she knew she would have to sacrifice her happiness.
Over time, Howell gradually lost patience with her. He continued to pressure Wilma, demanding a response from her. With grief and indignation, Wilma vaguely confided the Evans family secret to him. She didn’t really know what this secret meant, but to keep her promise to her mother-in-law, she had to make the cruelest decision of her life when her eldest grandson was born. In fact, Wilma was never able to forgive herself after that.
So Howell and Wilma’s relationship eventually broke down. Howell stopped being infatuated with Wilma, while Wilma suppressed her own feelings and maintained her perfect image as the spiritual pillar of the Evans family.
That year, they were already fifty years old.
Wilma’s son followed his parents’ path into business, but unfortunately, he did not inherit his father’s talent in this field. He was heavily dependent on help from Wilma and Howell. Wilma did everything possible to find the future hostess of the Evans family, because she had to pin all her hopes on her grandson.
Fortunately, her son cooperated with her. Very quickly, when his son was thirty years old, his wife gave birth to the heir of the Evans family. However, the happy news had a completely different reaction on Wilma. It was then that she had to commit the cruelest act of her life. Her daughter-in-law, who had just given birth, could not bear her decision, and died of depression only six months later. Subsequently, her son remarried and they had another son the following year. However, soon after, her son and new daughter-in-law lost their lives in a mysterious car accident.
This year, Wilma and Howell were sixty-five years old.
Wilma stayed true to her word and steadfastly protected the Evans family. She kept silent about her son’s murder. Furthermore, she was able to tolerate the existence of the culprit. Despite her resentments, she put on a good face and supported her two grandsons. Perhaps it was a blessing from God that the two grandsons inherited the business talent and famous looks of the Evans family. Finally, Wilma was able to put her heart at ease.
At the same time, Howell was no longer the man he once was. The indulgence and love he had for Wilma had long since been broken by his waiting. Although he eventually resorted to vicious means to achieve his ends, Malcolm and Enoch effectively opposed his tricks. Their feud continued until the end of Howell’s life.
Wilma and Howell were eighty-nine years old when they parted forever.
Tears welled up in Wilma’s eyes, as memories of the past raced through her head. God had decided everything and no matter how hard one tried to change one’s destiny, it was never enough to change it. Throughout her life, Wilma has experienced many ups and downs, including the death of her husband, nightmares of her business competitors, and the pain of losing her own son. Needless to say, she didn’t believe Howell died from a terrorist attack.
After all, he was too ambitious to be stopped. He could have lived a happy life at such an old age, but he insisted on getting involved in dark affairs, something even Wilma didn’t want to do. Perhaps this was his destiny. A sigh escaped Wilma’s lips. Howell had gotten himself into a bind with his hatred, resentment, and unrealistic feelings for her.
But Wilma’s life continued. She hoped that what her mother-in-law had told her was true, and that all of the Evans family’s nightmares would end at her hands. If that were the case, she would at least find some peace in death.
In the next life, if she had the chance to make a choice, she would never live such a life again. She would never do anything that would force her to live a life of self-reproach, even if it went against her mother-in-law’s wishes.
As Wilma slowly closed her eyes, her hands fell lifeless to her sides. When the servants found her in this state, they immediately informed Malcolm and Enoch. They took Wilma to the hospital as quickly as they could.
“Didn’t I tell you to take care of her? How it happened? » Enoch scolded the servants angrily.
“Sir…” The servants didn’t know what to answer at all.
For his part, Malcolm sat quietly and watched Wilma lie unconscious in her bed. Apart from her advanced age, no matter how much euphemism they tried to use, the truth was that the years of sadness and outrage had taken a toll on the old woman’s health. Besides, Malcolm knew she didn’t believe a word they told her about Howell.
“Ms Evans’ loss of consciousness was due to grief and indignation. It’s nothing serious,” the doctor explained.
“You can dispose of it now,” Malcolm said.
” Yes sir. »
The room returned to silence. After looking at Wilma thoughtfully for a long time, Malcolm calmly got up and left the room. Love was the main cause of people’s problems. No matter how powerful a person is, they would remain weak in the face of love.
