It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 55
Two days before their honeymoon ended, Malcolm and Lucia returned to S City. Malcolm went straight to the company to take care of his backlog of work while Lucia enjoyed the last two days of leisure in the apartment.
Since she had nothing to do, she took out her laptop and looked through the photos they had taken in Nepal. Then she took out her travel notebook and wrote some notes. She still had a lot of free time left, so she organized the souvenirs she brought back for her friends. She wrapped them one by one and put a name on each one. From time to time, she stared blankly at Malcolm’s photo. The faint smile on his face could easily touch the softer side of his heart.
“Is it because I’ve already really fallen in love with him?” » thought Lucie.
But his train of thoughts was interrupted by the sudden ringing of the phone. She looked at the phone in front of her, but her hand hesitated to take it. Her mind was debating whether to answer it or not. “If anyone wants to call me, even Malcolm, he will call my cell phone. Who would call the landline? Is anyone looking for Malcolm?’
After hesitating for a while, Lucia finally picked up the phone.
“Hello? Who is this, please?”
Wilma’s dignified voice came from the other end of the line.
“Lucie, is that you? I thought you should be home by now. Is Malcolm there? Let me talk to him.”
“Grandma, I’m sorry. Malcolm is in the business right now. He left early this morning,” Lucia replied carefully, changing the way she spoke to Wilma.
She didn’t know why, but she always felt like Wilma was weird. When they first met, Wilma’s inquisitive look made her uncomfortable. Wilma’s simple request to let her resign from her job and become pregnant with Malcolm’s child also made her uncomfortable. And on their wedding day, Wilma’s inquisitive eyes became more and more piercing. A kind of inexplicable fear welled up from the bottom of Lucia’s heart. This indescribable feeling was accompanied by a slight uneasiness. And that might be the best description of his mood right now.
“It’s okay. If he’s not here, I can just talk to you. After all, you’re his wife,” Wilma said slowly but rhythmically in a lukewarm voice.
“Okay. What is it, Grandma? I’ll do my best to make it,” Lucia said. His tone was neither humble nor arrogant.
“Lucia, I won’t beat around the bush. I know that you are also a simple person like me, so I want to tell you frankly. You are already Malcolm’s wife. I know that you still want to continue working. And I will not ask you to stop either. However, you should work in Evans Group. Only then can you be a united couple and live in harmony. If you work in another company, we cannot avoid others saying bad things about you, no matter how careful you are. It won’t be good for you or Malcolm. And you represent Evans Group now, so it will have a far-reaching impact. I hope you You can think about what I’m telling you now.” Wilma’s tone seemed to be negotiating. But the truth was that she felt like she couldn’t be refused.
Lucia listened silently. She didn’t speak. After all, no matter what she said, her position would always be misunderstood. If she refuted, she would be accused of disrespecting the elder. At the age of eight-nine, Wilma was too old to handle any mental stimulation. But if she didn’t say anything, Wilma might think she had agreed to his request. Lucia thought for a moment irritably.
“Lucia, are you still here?” Wilma asked in confusion after hearing no response from the other end of the line.
“Yes, grandmother. I’m listening to you”, Lucia quickly replied.
“Alas! I know you’re not happy with what I said. But since you are already married, you are no longer a free individual. There are many things out of your control. I also experienced this. So think carefully.” Wilma let out a long, deep sigh.
“Okay, Grandma,” Lucia replied simply. In the current situation, it was best not to say anything.
“You and Malcolm are coming here for dinner on the weekend next. Tell him.” There was a trace of helplessness in Wilma’s voice.
“Okay, Malcolm and I will be there,” Lucia said calmly.
“Okay. I’ll hang up now. Take a good rest.”
“I will. Goodbye, Grandma.”
Lucia waited for Wilma to hang up before hanging up. His good mood this morning disappeared in an instant. Looking at Malcolm’s photo on her laptop screen, she suddenly had the urge to print it out and photograph it with darts.
Was marrying him the right decision? In fact, Lucia had already thought about this question before. But she never thought trouble would come so soon. In Wilma’s eyes, perhaps Lucia should lead an elegant and noble woman’s life at home. Or, if she wanted to have an active career, she had to work with her husband. But for Lucia, she should be given at least some time to adapt to this kind of life.
Wilma’s words put a lot of pressure on her. She looked at her phone, dialed a number, then canceled it. She didn’t know if she should call. Finally, she tossed her phone aside, held out her hands, and collapsed onto the couch, still lost in thought.
The more Lucia thought about it, the more annoyed she became. She got up and paced around the living room.
As soon as Malcolm walked through the door, he saw that she was pacing back and forth and seemed agitated. “Something is wrong?” he asked confused.
“Ahhh!”
Lucia was so surprised that she screamed. She didn’t notice that Malcolm had already arrived. Then she turned and looked at the clock in the living room. It was only eleven o’clock. “Why did he come back so soon?” »
she thought. “What were you thinking?” Malcolm asked. He walked over to Lucia and took her in his arms.
She looked at him and told him what had happened earlier. Malcolm let go of Lucia and walked towards the wine cellar without saying anything.
He knew what Wilma had in mind. She wanted Lucia to resign, stay at home, get pregnant and give birth to a son. This way, she could rest assured that the next heir was guaranteed. But she had no idea of Lucia’s character. Malcolm poured a glass of wine, turned and looked at Lucia in silence for a long time.
“Do you want me to quit my job too?” » Lucia asked coldly.
Although she asked a question, she silently gave an affirmative answer. She may not have been able to see what Malcolm had in mind, but she knew a little about his behavior. When he was silent, it meant he already had an answer. Sometimes he didn’t say anything. But that didn’t mean he agreed. Mostly, he hoped people could compromise on their own.
Malcolm sighed softly and said helplessly, “Do you really think Grandma just wants you to quit your job?” He looked at Lucia and waited for her response.
“Is there anything else?” Lucia asked back.
“Sometimes you can’t see things clearly.” What he said was not the answer to her question.
“Your grandmother wants me to quit my job and stay at home to get pregnant and give birth to a son. Is that it?” Lucia was immediately enlightened.
She remembered that when she first met Wilma, she had already said it bluntly. But at that time, she and Malcolm were not yet married, so she did not take Wilma’s words seriously. But now that she was already Malcolm’s wife, Wilma no longer hoped but asked him to do it.
“You do not want?” Malcolm asked with a flash of sadness in his eyes.
“No. I don’t want my child to be born without love. Besides, having a baby is not part of my plan at the moment.” Lucia was a little overwhelmed by the sudden coldness in Malcolm’s voice.
“Without love? What do you think love is? Is it just saying ‘I love you’ every day? That’s what you call love, huh?” Malcolm asked, approaching her step by step and pushing her into a corner.
“No I…” Lucia couldn’t find the right words to say.
“What? Am I not good enough for you?” Malcolm asked indifferently.
“I…No…” Since Lucia was stuck, she spoke incoherently.
“What? Tell me!” Malcolm spat. He stood still and looked at her coldly.
“I…I can’t feel that you love me.” Finally, Lucia was able to say it.
“Love? Ha! I told you I could spoil you because I adore you. But you can’t be greedy, okay?” Malcolm said coldly.
Lucia turned her head away and said nothing. It was her decision to marry him. And she also promised herself that if she loved a man, she would stay with him no matter what. But why did he always have to give her an illusion? Was it really like what he said that he only spoiled her because he adored her?
“OK I understand.” Lucia’s voice grew cold.
“If you want to work, come to Evans Group. I will arrange a suitable position for you within the appropriate range.” This time, Malcolm’s voice softened.
“Yes, I will resign. But I won’t work in the Evans Group,” Lucia said firmly.
“Wildcat,” Malcolm said softly.
Lucie was sulking. Although she was cornered by him, she still chose not to look at him. She turned his head away and looked out the floor-to-ceiling French doors. There was a slight bitterness rising in his heart. And an indescribable emotion made her feel depressed.
“Give me a child.” Malcolm pulled her back, held her in his arms and added, “A child of our flesh and b***d.”
Lucie remained silent. But the phrase “a child of our own flesh b***d” touched his heart. “I made a bet on marriage. Should I continue? Children are the bond of marriage. Maybe everything will change after we have a child. Love would make people confused and hesitant. It seemed like his old free and easy self was gone. And she was under a lot of pressure. His mind was in disarray.
She felt like she was walking on a rope near a cliff. There was an attractive prize waiting for him at the other end. But if she lost her balance, she would lose everything, including herself.
“Is this really what I want? » Lucia wondered inwardly.
Malcolm seemed to feel the struggle in his heart. He didn’t say anything to force her further. He hugged her gently, looking out the French doors.
“What are you going to do, Lucie? he was thinking.
