Chapter 57

Soon he came back with a wheelchair alongside his personal assistant and took Mrs. Miriam to the beach as she had requested. We followed behind, accompanying them to the beach which was now silently serene and desolate than it was in the daytime. The continuous splashing of the waves against the rocks at the bayside as and the ebbing tide was the only noise that disturbed the calm night as Mr. Stark rolled the wheelchair on which Mrs. Miriam savoring the chilly windy breeze that kept brewing around the tranquil seashore under the starless night. Hilary and I had fallen behind from the slow procession on the sandy beach while Richard and Ben escorted their mom alongside Mr. Stark but they were up ahead the both of us assisting their father the very best they could.

Hilary was the first to break the silence that had come between us that had lasted fifty minutes after we came to the beach and it turned out to be a perfect chance for us to converse without involving the boys who had their own issues to deal with. She had quickly taken the opportunity to know more about me and I too wanted to know more about her though my mind was a bit distracted with how Richard was coping with the current situation with his parents which had gotten far worse than it was the first time I witnessed it firsthand.

"So, you told Ben that you lived in Georgia, right?" she asked, trying to create a conversation between us and squeezed her fingers against her shawl which was wearing to shield herself from the cold.

"Yes, I did with my aunt and her two kids. What about you?", "New jersey but Southampton was my hometown before we moved there", "That's great. If you don't mind at all, tell me more about your relationship with Ben? I mean you guys are planning to get married, right?" I said gesturing at the ring she wore on her left finger.

"This..." she chuckled as she peered at her own finger. "It is as you have suspected, we've finally resolved our differences after four years of doubts if he's the right man for me",

"I think he suits you", "Anyone can say that. What of Richard? You two look cute together", I blushed even though I already felt it was true, "You think so?", "Of course...did you hit your head or is something really wrong with you?", "No, it's neither but it's just....no one has ever told me that before", I replied, picking pace with her.

"Really?", "Yeah...not even Chloe my best friend", "Why?", "What do you mean why?", "Why hasn't she told you something like that or perhaps no one thinks you are perfect for him", "I can't say but everyone in school thinks poorly of our relationship", "How so?", "It's quite a long story", I replied, glancing over the opaque horizon which had gotten even darker in the cold night.

"Have you told him yet?", "Told Richard what?", "That you have feelings for him", Hilary retorted, still looking up ahead at the three men escorting the sick woman in a wheelchair.

"Honestly, No, I haven't", "And why haven't you? You know he does feel something for you", "I can see that but it's just....", "Is it because of his past with Lori or there's something else you haven't told him yet?", "It's not that. He haven't confessed to me that he does love me and I can't tell him yet until I'm sure he does have true feelings for me", I explained and she nodded her head in affirmation.

"You have a point there but don't wait until it's too late for you to tell him and I'm sure he really does have feelings for you if you don't know", "How can you be so sure?", "Because he wouldn't have brought you here if he don't love you like you fear", Hilary replied and I deeply pondered on her words which seemed logical in all respect since he could have called one of close friends to join him for the trip especially Clyde and Linder whom he frequently hang around with but he chose instead to invited me to his real home in Hawaii which was too much of coincidence for anyone in his shoes to do. I thought about what Hilary said and concluded that he really had developed feelings for me during our times together which had rendered a lot of closure between us.

After the long silent walk around the beach, we returned back to the mansion and around 9pm, everyone went back to bed as soon as we were done eating supper.
