The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 85

The court opened and Xavier and Mia stepped into the hall, with their hands entwined and both in a grey robe. While Mia chose their clothes, Xavier made the choice for her hair. He told her it'd go better on the robe in a bun and he took his time to do that. Mia was a genius in many things, knowing the best style for her hair wasn't one of them. Thank the goddess her husband did.

The setting of the courtroom had changed since the trial began last week. Usually, the room had a large rectangular table with curvy edges and seats around it which the elders and the king sat on. Now, however, the table had been dissected into smaller shapes and the chairs rearranged. The eight elders sat at the right side of the room where their chairs were and a thinner table stayed before them. Robb also stayed on the right, but further away from the elders. Xavier sat on the left side of the room and he had the eyes of the elders and Robb on him in this position. The witness' stand stayed in front of the room where everyone could see while those who were families sat in the back seats.

Robb and the eight elders were already seated along with Elliott and Edward, waiting as they entered. Today was the second and the last day of trial. The first was last week. After today's trial, Robb would take another week to decide based on all the accounts of the witness he had received. This time next week would be the final verdict.

Just like last week, the witness who came in for Xavier would give their testimonies and then have Elliott question their testimonies. Robb chose him before the trial began last week as an interrogator and Xavier almost lost it in the court. Elliot took an oat to remain fair and unbiased in his line of questioning, but that was like a monkey swearing to stay off bananas.

Elliott was the last person Xavier wanted as an interrogator. His cousin had never had the best intentions for him. He knew the snake would do everything in his power to see him lose, even if it meant discrediting all the witnesses. He did that, and though they received four testimonies, he made two of them questionable.

This was why Xavier wanted to give up, and he would have if Mia hadn't held on to hope so tightly.

The elders of the maiden's court wrote back last night, all vowing to come in today as witnesses and the letter Mia received were about six. It was more than what they needed and they couldn't be happier.

Xavier's gaze drifted to Mia and, as if she'd heard his thoughts, she gave him a reassuring smile. She squeezed down on his hand. He brought her hand up and placed a loving kiss on it.

Mia took a seat at the back beside Edward while Xavier approached the front seat where he had sat throughout last week's trial.

Mia fidgeted with her fingers and counted down the hours, hoping the maidens that promised to deliver would arrive any moment from now. Edward placed his hands and her trembling ones to calm and reassure her. She swallowed nervously and her gaze left Xavier and settled on Edward.

"Thank you for everything."

Edward had been here, and there since the trial began. He dedicated his time to find out who was behind the disappearance of the bodies as well as the threat letter the royals received. Since the trial restricted the king's movement, Xavier counted on him to do the work and whatever information he received, he reported back.

He smiled. "You can thank me when all this is over."

After five minutes of silent waiting, Elliott rose to his feet and moved to stand at the centre of the courtroom. His hands entwined before him and he turned to Robb and gave a quick bow and then to the elders and doing the same. Then he turned to those in the courtroom, the person of Edward and Mia, and he nodded at them.

He didn't acknowledge Xavier before he started speaking, and Xavier paid no mind to it. If only he'd go dumb for the rest of his life, Xavier would be the happiest man alive.

"This is the second week of the trial and we are here to hear the witnesses plead the case of the alpha king." his gaze moved over to Mia.

Mia turned to the door where the witnesses promised were supposed to step through a while ago, but sees no one. She turned back to Elliott, her face blank.

"There are no more witnesses for the king?" he asked with a raised brow and when she maintained silence, he turned to the alpha of alphas. "Your grace, we need at least three more to consider the alpha king's fate. Yet, I don't think any more witnesses will take the stand for him."

"I'll stand!" Edward spoke up, rising to his feet. All eyes in the court turned to him.

"You can't stand. You're the alpha king's younger brother," Elliott said, thwarting Edward's demands with a ridiculous tone.

"I am not just the alpha king's younger brother, Lord Elliott. I am Edward Ainsworth, the crown prince of Wahala kingdom," Edward said through gritted teeth.

This was the first time Edward had spoken with anger and this was a side Mia hoped to see more of.

Xavier had a dark smirk on his face, proud of his brother at this moment. Happy to see him finally unleashing his scary side.

Mia rose to her feet. "I'd like to bear witness as well. And before you tell me I'm the alpha king's bride, I'd like you to know I was Mia Asika, lady and daughter of Lord Jobe Asika of the house, Asika way before I became queen." "I'll allow it," Robb spoke up, nodding his head.

Elliott stared at Robb in disbelief. "Spouses and siblings have never testified at the trial by witnesses before, because most times their testimonies are subjective, your grace."

Robb's eyes narrowed on Elliott, and it was because he had overstepped by questioning his decisions. "I said I'll allow it."

Elliott bowed in defeat and turned back to Mia and Edward. "Even if you testify, the alpha king needs at least seven witness testimonies for our Father to even consider."

"They are on their way," Mia said with much confidence, and Robb nodded his head in acceptance.
