Love at the Door -
Chapter 73
Chapter 73
The stern bodyguard’s grin spread wide. His face was flushed with excitement.
He patted his chest confidently and said, “Got it! I swear, I’ll protect Ms. Crowford. No. one will dare lay a finger on her.”
Wallace nodded in approval and was satisfied with his response.
However, Melina looked a little awkward. Andrew was still landing beside them. Was it appropriate for this bodyguard to be so happy?
She couldn’t help but ask, “Did you know me before today?”
Jason nodded earnestly. “Yeah, I did! My uncle told me about you. He said I was too slow, and Mr. Wentworth had a short fuse. If I stayed with Mr. Wentworth, I’d probably piss him off too much.
“So, my uncle suggested I stick close
to you instead. He said you were kind, and maybe if I hung around enough, I’d get lucky and end up working for you.”
Melina’s expression grew even more puzzled. People always said she was straightforward, but this guy took honesty to a new level.
Did he just openly criticize Andrew’s temper right in front of him?
Melina asked, “Who’s your uncle?”
Jason replied honestly, “My uncle is Bernard, the driver who’s been working for Mr. Wentworth Senior for over ten years.”
Melina couldn’t help but chuckle. Jason had laid it all out in just a few sentences. She laughed and said, “But I really don’t need a bodyguard.”
Jason’s face immediately fell. “Please don’t say that, Ms. Crawford, I’m good at my job! Really! Even Mr. Wentworth can’t beat me. Benard said if I stayed with Mr. Wentworth and kept messing up, it wouldn’t be long before he killed me in frustration.
Wallace laughed and added, “Just let him stay. Don’t be fooled by his lack of intelligence as he’s got great skills. Even if there’s no fighting to be done, he’s good for driving and carrying things.”
Jason nodded enthusiastically. “I’m super useful!”
Melina finally gave in and let him stay with no way to decline.
Andrew continued to watch from behind, but no one asked for his opinion.
Wallace led Melina to the car, and only then did Andrew finally speak up, “Where are you taking her to?”
Wallace glanced at Andrew and said, “I’m taking Melina back to the Wentworth
residence. Why would she stay here at Oakread? Are you planning to kick her out at any moment?”
Melina was startled. “Mr. Wentworth Senior you… you knew I moved out before?”
Wallace’s temperament flared. “You clueless girl, if I hadn’t happened to see you after that car accident, would you have kept it a secret forever?”
Wallace thought about what he had learned during his investigation–the way Melina had been mistreated, how she had endured everything alone, and how she had even gone to the market to earn money by butchering fish.
He had expected that Melina’s basic needs would be met even if Andrew didn’t care
for her.
it seemed Andrew hadn’t even considered Melina a person. She didn’t even have
a new outfit, and Wallace was so angry he had to clutch his chest.
Melina panicked after seeing Wallace clutch his chest. “Mr. Wentworth Senior, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to deceive you. Please don’t be angry.”
Jason quickly handed over some heart medication, and Wallace took a couple of pills before calming down.
Melina was anxious. She had previously kept quiet about her situation to upset Wallace. She was worried that revealing anything might provoke him due to his
condition.
Andrew was just overly suspicious but wasn’t entirely foolish. He realized he had misunderstood Melina after watching this scene. It wasn’t her who had been scheming behind his back.
His recent actions, including everything he had done today, seemed almost laughable in retrospect. Did Melina not have any intention to plot against him?
Andrew looked at Melina in the car and said in a subdued voice, “Melina, get out of
the car and come back to Oakread with me.”
He decided to follow Toby’s advice and have Melina’s background thoroughly investigated once they returned.
Andrew wanted to know everything about her past. Maybe then he could understand what kind of person she really was.
