Chapter 22

HELGA FIDGETED with her hands, her gaze flickering towards the connecting door as it opened, revealing the Alpha King. He was clad in his signature black silk robe, hugging his well- built frame snugly. His hair was still impeccably styled, and she couldn't help but wonder how he managed to maintain such a regal appearance even when retiring for the night. With or without his luxurious attire, there was no denying his strikingly handsome features. She thought about all the she-wolves who were afraid of him, missing out on what they perceived as a threat instead of seeing his true allure. The Alpha King was definitely easy on the eyes.

"Do you want some tea?" Siegren gracefully took a seat on the sofa across from Helga.

"I'm fine, Your Majesty. I might not be able to fall asleep if I drink anything," she answered, still feeling a bit weird that they were talking in the middle of the night. Although she was pleased that there seemed to be progress between them, it was also a lot to take in, especially since it had all happened unexpectedly. "If you don't mind, may I ask you something?"

"Go on," Siegren gave her a single nod as he leaned against the sofa and crossed his legs, waiting for her to ask the question.

"Did something happen while you were away?" Helga inquired, curious about the sudden change in his behavior. She couldn't tell if it was because she hadn't seen him in a week, or if he had undergone a transformation into a kinder person overnight.

"Nothing, the border's clear, there's no trouble from the Lycans of Narva." Helga's body tensed slightly at his response, but she quickly relaxed and nodded. That wasn't the kind of answer she was hoping for, though. But hearing the reason why they checked the borders that separate Verdentia from the neighboring country piqued her interest.

"Why do you ask?" Siegren raised his brow slightly, his eyes never leaving hers. The moonlight illuminated Helga's face, accentuating her features and mesmerizing him. She was wearing a modest nightgown, but it somehow made her even more alluring. Her enchanting glow captured his attention, and he couldn't help but stare. "Do you want to get involved in Verdentia's affairs already?"

"If it's alright with you, I'd like to learn more about the country's affairs so I can better assist you," Helga said with earnestness laced in her voice, a genuine smile forming on her lips. "But for now, I want to focus on the wedding preparations. I've already selected the flowers and decorations for the ceremony and banquet, but I still wanted to hear your opinion before finalizing everything."

"Hmm." Siegren hummed, thinking deeply for a few seconds, "You can show me all the choices you've made so far tomorrow. For now, let's talk about how our marriage will work. It's crucial for both of us to have some type of agreement in place. After all, this union is more of a formality rather than a genuine marriage. You were aware of that when you volunteered during Luna selection, correct?"

"Yes, Your Majesty." Helga nodded, the smile on her face vanishing completely.

You were aware of that when you volunteered during Luna selection, correct?"

"Yes, Your Majesty." Helga nodded, the smile on her face vanishing completely.

She let out a soft laugh, her emerald eyes sparkling with amusement, causing Siegren's throat to tighten uncomfortably and a warm feeling to spread throughout his chest.

"Rest assured that I won't live a depressing life as the queens before me. Even if I develop feelings for you in the future, I promise not to burden or create problems for you. All I request is for your protection and not to mistreat me." Siegren's intense gaze made Helga flinch. Despite her impulse to look away, she held his stare with determination. Her heart raced at his penetrating gaze, her mind racing as she tried to understand why he was looking at her so intently.

"Come here," Siegren gently beckoned her closer, his eyes never leaving hers, but Helga hesitated because she was unsure of his intentions as he seemed to be acting differently. "I won't do anything, just come here for a moment."

His voice was soft and gentle, a far cry from his usual tone when speaking to her. Helga slowly took a few steps forward until she stood right in front of him. When she stopped, he looked up at her and patted the cushion beside him, motioning her to sit. Without any hesitation, Helga joined him and watched him take something out of his robe pocket before handing it to her.

"Uhm, w-what is this, Your Majesty?" she asked, looking at the small box on her palm.

"Open it." His tone was so demanding and assertive as he stared back at her in anticipation. Hesitatingly, she opened the box and saw a silver diamond ring, glistening and sparkling against the light. "Put it on, it's yours."

Helga's eyes widened in shock as she couldn't believe what she was hearing. She sat there, staring at the Alpha King with her mouth slightly open, feeling a blush creeping up her cheeks. "I..." she trailed off, "Uhm, is this an engagement ring?"

"David was nagging me to get you one. He insists that if I don't want you to suffer the same fate as previous candidates who killed themselves, then I need to treat you properly." He replied nonchalantly.

Helga's surprised expression suddenly turned into a smile, and before she knew it, she was laughing, which startled Siegren. He was taken aback by her sudden outburst, as this was the first time he had seen her show such a joyful emotion. He wasn't sure what he had said to make her laugh, but what made him feel even weirder was how his heart started beating faster just by watching her.

"What's funny?" he asked, prompting Helga to stop and dab at the tears forming in her eyes. It finally clicked for her why he had been behaving differently, despite his clear reminder during their breakfast together last week.

"Nothing, Your Majesty," she said before taking a look at the ring again. "I couldn't figure it out earlier, but now it's clear to me why you've been acting differently."

Siegren frowned slightly, wondering if he had been behaving strangely in her eyes. He was trying to act so naturally, but he guessed, he failed to do it.

While he was out of the palace with David, his trusted advisor kept reminding him to be kind and considerate to Helga, especially now that they were soon to be married. Siegren hadn't intended to take the beta's advice, but he figured there was no harm in letting down his guard every once in a while.

A slight smirk played on his lips as Helga's eyes remained fixed on the ring. He then sighed, and plucked the ring from the box, catching her off guard. But what he did next was even more unexpected.

"Well... Make the most of it," he remarked, sliding the ring onto her delicate finger.
