Married On Paper To The Billionaire
Chapter 22: Someone’s Watching…

"To Tiara and Travis Beaumont!" "Cheers!"

Everyone clinked glasses and drank to the health of the new members of the family. The babies were in the nursery with their nannies while their parents and the rest of the family celebrated their birth on the large patio of their island home. "Aww... this place is exquisite!" Elsie gushed. "I love it."

"Thanks, Mother," said Kane. "You can move back here and live with us if you want."

"Oh, I don't think so. This is a place to vacation in, not live. At least that's how I see it."

"Preach, Mrs Beaumont!" Said, Chloe. "I told my sister the same thing."

"Give it a rest, Chloe. We love it here," said Emilia.

"It's a nice place, no doubt, but I think it's a little too... secluded," said Lara.

"If the owners like it, then we should love it," said Andrew.

"Always a diplomat. Thank you, Daddy," said Emilia.

"Dinner is served," the chef announced and everyone made their way to the dining room.

Everything about the island villa was huge and opulent. Emilia is still blown away that Kane had gotten the place built in under six months.

As soon as they'd both agreed that they would relocate to Malta to settle down with their children, Kane and his construction team had swung into action. They'd ended up building an architectural phenomenon that is second to none. "Are we expecting the locals to join us too or is all this food for us alone?" Jack asked.

"Please, don't ruin this happy evening with your perpetually sour mood," Lillian warned him.

"I was just asking a question," he insisted. "What happens to the rest of the food we don't eat?"

"Drop it, Jack!" Samuel snapped at him.

"I wasn't talking to you," he fired back.

"That's enough," said Kane. "You can't keep doing this, Jack. You complain about being excluded from the family all the time but when you're included, all you do is give us reasons to want to leave you out next time. Stop it." "Whatever..." he mumbled.

"Let's say grace," said Elsie.

After a brief prayer of thanksgiving, they began to eat. The food was delicious and abundant. The mood was once again lively as everyone talked and laughed while eating.

Emilia excused herself after dinner and went to check on her babies. Tiara was been fed by her nanny, while Travis was still sleeping peacefully in his cot.

"You can take a break now," she told them. "I'll stay with them for a while."

"Yes, ma'am," they said.

Tiara's nanny handed her over to Emilia. She had finished feeding the baby with the breast milk that Emilia had pumped out earlier.

"Hey, little princess," she cooed to her daughter who was already asleep again. "You look so pretty."

Emilia was still in awe of her babies. She almost couldn't believe that they were hers. How two little human beings grew inside of her body for months was still a wonder to her. "I knew I'd find you here," said Kane, coming to join her.

She smiled at him. "This is going to sound silly to you but I was missing them so much."

He chuckled. "That's not silly. I was missing them too."

He bent over his son's crib and scooped the tiny baby into his arms. "I didn't realize how much I love the smell of babies until now."

Emilia laughed. "It's infectious."

"Right!"

Kane pulled up the other nanny's chair and sat beside Emilia. "I think they did a switch"

"What do you mean?"

"Look at their faces. Travis looks like you and Tiara looks like me. They did a face swap of us."

She laughed again. "I like it. Let's see if their personalities will match their faces."

"This feels really good, Emilia. Thank you," he said softly.

"For what?"

"For making me the happiest man alive."

Her heart melted. "That's so sweet. I love you, Kane."

"I love you, Emilia. I cannot wait to see what the rest of our future together will look like. I know it's going to be a rewarding experience to raise these children with you."

"You give me so much credit."

"Because you deserve it. Not many women would give a man like me a second chance after how I treated you in the past. I'm going to spend the rest of my life making it up to you, I promise." "Stop bringing that up. It's in the past. Let's focus on the present and the future."

He kissed her and Travis began to squirm in his arms.

"Seriously, young man? You chose this moment to wake up? Can't I kiss my wife in peace anymore?"

Emilia giggled. "I guess he's a little jealous."

"Well, get used to it, buddy. Because I enjoy kissing your mother a lot and I'll keep doing it whether you like it or not."

Travis began to cry.

"See what you've done. You've upset him," Emilia laughed. She returned Tiara to her cot and then took Travis from his father's arm.

"He's awake," said his nanny who appeared at the doorway like a magical being.

"It's ok, Farida. I'll nurse him," said Emilia. "I'll send for you and Celia when I'm done."

"Ok, ma'am," she said and left.

"How did she know which twin cried?" Kane asked.

Emilia chuckled. "They've been with the babies for nearly a week now, so I'm sure they can tell the difference already."

"Don't all babies sound alike?"

"Generally, yes. But when you know the babies personally, you can tell who is who when they cry."

"Now I know why they say mothers are superheroes. You all are a special kind of creature."

"Thanks for the compliments."

"You're welcome, sweetheart."

They sat in silence and Kane watched lovingly as Emilia nursed their son. It was an intimate bonding experience for them. He never knew it was possible to derive so much joy from watching his wife feed their baby. "It's going to be awfully quiet around here when everyone goes back home," she whispered.

"Are you worried about that? Having second thoughts?"

"I don't know. Maybe raising our babies in isolation isn't such a great idea after all."

"Would rather raise them under public scrutiny while dodging the paparazzi every day?"

"That sounds chaotic."

"Exactly. We don't have to live here forever, just for the first few years of our children's lives. We need the peace and sanity that this environment brings." "You're right. I didn't mean to sound ungrateful."

"You didn't sound ungrateful. You were just expressing your concerns and that's ok. It seems motherhood is making you more apologetic than before."

She chuckled. "You're becoming an expert in the nuances of motherhood."

"I'm a fast learner."

Four days later, their families bid them farewell and returned to the U.S. Emilia was not prepared for the overwhelming wave of loneliness that descended on her afterwards.

It was as if she was all alone on the island even though Kane and their army of domestic staff and security guards were there too.

She spent more and more time with the babies until the nannies began to grumble because they practically had nothing to do while Emilia fussed around the babies all day.

"Let the nannies do their jobs," Kane told her one day. "You're wearing yourself out by doing their jobs for them."

"Aren't I allowed to take care of my babies anymore?" She retorted.

"Of course, you are. But you don't have to fold their laundry, make their beds, bathe them and dress them. That's for the nannies to do. Just feed them at intervals and cuddle them."

"I will not outsource my duties as a mother to a couple of strangers."

"Celia and Farida are now strangers?"

"Leave me alone, Kane. I'm not complaining."

"Well, I am. You barely spend time with me anymore. It's almost as if you're tied to the nursery."

"Oh, I see. So, that's what this is all about."

"What?"

"You're not truly concerned about me wearing myself out. You're just upset that I spend more time with our children and not with you."

"Don't twist my words, Emilia."

"I'm not twisting anything. You said it yourself!"

"Fine. Do as you please."

As soon as Kane walked away from her, Emilia broke down in tears. What was wrong with her? Why was she so angry?

She called her mother on the phone later in the evening and gave her a summarized version of what had been happening in the past three months.

"I think what you two need is a breath of fresh air," said Lara.

"Are you kidding, Mom? We're surrounded by fresh air!"

"No, I mean like a different scenery. When was the last time you two went out on a date?"

"Mom, we have newborns to take care of. Why would we go on a date?"

"The babies are three months old already, Emilia. Cut off the imaginary umbilical cords and set yourself free. They'll be fine if you leave them alone for a few hours." "I don't know..."

"Did you fire the nannies?"

"No."

"Then let them do their jobs and stop trying to villainize your innocent husband."

"You're making me feel worse, Mom."

"That's not my intention but I hope you get my message. Reconnect with your husband and ignite the romantic spark in your marriage."

"Now, you sound like my therapist."

Lara laughed. "I'll take that as a compliment. Now, get off the phone and go to Kane. Wear something sexy and take him out to dinner."

"I don't know about that sexy part... I don't feel that way yet."

"Wait, haven't you two started having sex again?"

"Mom!"

"What?"

"Thanks for the chat. Bye!"

She hung up and giggled, and then she sobered up to consider what her mother had said. Had she been too hard on Kane? Was she driving a wedge between them with her obsession with the babies?

He hadn't even tried to initiate lovemaking with her because he'd known that she wasn't ready. Perhaps it was time for her to bring the sexy back into their marriage.

"Ok, I can do it," she whispered to herself. "We're going out for a romantic dinner tonight."

She took her time to dress up and apply some makeup on her face. By the time she was done, she was impressed with her image in the mirror.

When she went into the nursery to check on the babies before leaving, the nannies were stunned by her beautiful transformation. They showered her with compliments which she accepted graciously, then she went in search of Kane.

"There you are," she said when she spotted him lounging beside the pool. When he saw her, his jaw dropped.

"Emilia?"

"That's me," she replied with a grin.

"You look gorgeous!"

"Thank you."

"What's the occasion?"

"We are going on a romantic date tonight. Get off your fine ass and get dressed, baby."

"You don't have to say it twice!"

He got up and hurried into the house to go and get dressed. He joined her in the hall ten minutes later, looking like a goofy teenager going to prom. "Where to?" He asked.

"Where else? The only fancy restaurant on the island, of course."

"We could go into town if you want."

"Nah. I don't want us to travel that far."

"Ok, Mother Hen. Let's go."

She laughed and accepted his offered arm. Their chauffeur was more than happy to finally have a reason to drive a car again.

When they arrived at the restaurant, they were treated like royalty. The staff fawned over them and served them the most expensive dish on the menu.

As she ate, Emilia felt an ominous prickling on the back of her neck. She looked around but there was nothing out of place in the restaurant. Everyone was minding their business and having a good time. "Are you ok?" Kane asked softly.

"Yes, it's just..."

"What?"

"I don't know. I sort of feel as if someone is watching us."

Kane smiled. "That's to be expected. We're the stars of this place for now, so of course, some people will stare at us.'

"

"Nobody is staring at us."

"But you said

"

"Never mind. Maybe it's just my imagination."

He reached across the table and squeezed her hand gently. She felt comforted by his touch but that weird feeling didn't completely go away.

"Who are you?"

Joyce nearly fell out of her boat and lost her binoculars in the process. She had been so focused on watching Emilia and Kane that she hadn't heard another boat come up beside her.

"I asked you a question, ma'am. Who are you?"

Joyce gazed at the man who was questioning her. He was alone in his small boat but he was carrying a black rod that looked suspiciously like a rifle.

"I'm just a tourist," she replied in her best old-woman voice. "I mean no harm."

"Tourists aren't allowed here," the man replied. "Turn your boat immediately and leave."

"Sorry," she said and hurried to obey.

She wasn't about to get shot in the middle of a European island where her family won't find her body. Dying in Malta was not a part of the plan.

"If you ever come back here, you'll be arrested for trespassing," the man warned her sternly.

"Fine. I'm leaving already!" She snarled.

As she sailed away into the night, she vowed to get her pound of flesh from the Beaumonts, even if it was the last thing she did.
