Married On Paper To The Billionaire
Chapter 63: End Of The Road

Kane thought it was only possible to dodge bullets in movies but he'd done it in real life. When the old man showed up with the gun and yelled at him, Kane had preempted his opponent's move and dropped to the ground before he pulled the trigger.

He lunged at the man, knocking him to the ground. Hank fired another shot that went into the ceiling and Kane grabbed the rifle, trying to wrestle it from his grip.

"Get off me, you bastard!" Hank yelled at him as he continued to maintain his hold on the gun.

Kane headbutted him, destabilizing Hank for a few seconds. He finally snatched the gun from his hands and got up.

"You bastard. You broke my nose," Hank lamented and wiped the blood from his nostril.

"Who the hell are you?" Kane asked him while aiming the rifler at its owner.

"I'm Hank. This is my cabin and you're a trespasser."

Kane glanced at Emilia and saw that she was still awake but terrified. He returned his attention to Hank who was now sitting on the floor, rubbing his swollen nose. "Why did you bring my wife here?"

"I found her in the woods. What was I supposed to do? Leave her there to die?"

"Why did you tie her to the bed?"

"Can't you see she's got some broken bones? Those casts are going to put her bones together."

"Why didn't you just call the police instead? Are you crazy?"

"Hey, don't you dare insult me. This ain't the first time I'm treating a couple of broken bones. I used to treat Billie's broken bones all the time."

"Who the hell is Billie? You know what, never mind. Get on your knees and face the wall!"

Hank glowered at him. "I'll do no such thing," he replied deliberately.

Kane cocked the rifle to warn him. "I may be fast enough to dodge a bullet, but I don't think you can boast of the same speed." "What? You gonna shoot me in my own cabin?"

"Don't tempt me. Get on your knees, now!"

Hank chuckled. "You don't scare me, pretty boy. Trotting in here with your fancy clothes and shiny hair. Have you ever fired a gun before?" Kane blew out Hank's left knee and the old man screamed in pain. He fell on the ground, writhing in pain as he grabbed his damaged knee. "How did I do, Hank?" Kane asked him. "Was that a good shot?"

"You fucking bastard..." Hank groaned and began to pant.

"You should probably stay on the ground," Kane replied and walked backwards towards Emilia. "Hey, babe. Hang in there, ok? I'm going to get you out here."

He carefully lowered the gun beside the bed while keeping an eye on Hank who was still weeping on the floor. He began to untie the robes binding Emilia to the bed. "I'm scared..." she whimpered softly.

"Don't worry, I've got my eyes on him."

"He... hurt me..." she sobbed.

Kane paused and looked into her eyes. "What did he do?"

"He he touched me..."

Kane clenched his jaw to reign in his anger. "Don't worry, my love. I'll make sure he never hurts you or anyone else ever again."

He turned to look at Hank and saw the old man dragging himself away from the room. He probably had another weapon stashed somewhere in the cabin which he was going for at the moment.

"I'll be right back," Kane whispered to Emilia and rose. He picked up the rifle and strolled towards Hank.

"Going somewhere?"

Hank paused to look at Kane. "You stupid fucker! You're not going to get away with this."

"We'll see about that," Kane replied and fired a shot at the old man, poking a hole in his right hand.

"Motherfucker!" Hank screamed.

"Was that the hand you used to touch my wife?"

"Ugh!" The old man wept. "She enjoyed it too!"

"Did she?" Kane asked calmly and aimed the rifle between Hank's legs. "Tell me about it."

When Hank saw where the gun's muzzle was pointing, his eyes grew large and his breathing became shallow.

"Please, don't. Don't do that, please..."

"Why not? You take pleasure in hurting women, don't you?"

"I'm sorry, it wasn't my fault," Hank begged desperately. "I get so lonely out here on my own. Billie used to make me feel good but she's gone. She's been dead a year now." "Who is this Billie you keep mentioning?"

"She is, I mean, she was my daughter."

"You used to touch your daughter?" Kane asked with disgust.

"Yeah, it didn't mean nothing. She liked it too. They all like it. That's what they're made for -fucking and cooking."

"I believe I speak for everyone when I say the world would be a happier place without you in it. You're the scum of the earth and this is the end of the road for you." "No!"

Kane squeezed the trigger and blasted Hank's loins to pieces. "Oops," he said afterwards.

He turned around and walked back to where Emilia lay helplessly on the dirty bed. Just then, it began to rain outside.

"Should we wait it out or get going?" He asked her softly.

"Get me out of here," she answered.

"It's cold outside."

"I don't care. I don't want to be here anymore."

י

He smiled and kissed her. "Your wish is my command."

"How did you find me?" She asked as he began to untie the rest of the rope holding her to the bed.

"It's a long story."

"You didn't go to Qatar?"

"Thankfully, no. I'll make it up to them when this is over."

He carefully carried her and she groaned the entire time. Every inch of her body was enveloped in pain.

"Sorry, baby. This will be over soon," Kane assured her.

As he carried her out of the room, Hank's still form was still on the floor surrounded by an expanding pool of blood.

"Is he dead?" Emilia asked fearfully.

"I'd be dead if someone blew up my dick like that."

Emilia chuckled and groaned simultaneously as pain shot through her body.

"Easy, baby. You're going to be alright."

She rested her head on his chest and sighed. "Thank you for coming for me."

"Always, baby. You're not going to get away from me that easily."

"I must have been a fool to doubt your love for me before."

"I've been a fool many times before too. Nearly losing you today made me realize just how bleak my life would be without you."

Her eyes became misty. "Oh, Kane. I love you so much."

"I love you, Emilia, more than I could ever explain with words. You complete me, you make my life meaningful. I am so sorry for all the ways I let you down before."

"Please, don't apologize anymore, Kane. You put your life on the line for me today. That is the biggest expression of love. It overwrites whatever mistakes you made in the past." "Wow... I feel like a brand-new man. Thank you, Emilia."

He kissed her tenderly and stopped when she groaned. "Sorry," he whispered.

"No, it's not you. Every little movement causes me so much pain. I don't even understand how I survived that accident."

"It's because we have unfinished business."

She smiled at him. "We'll always have unfinished business."

"That's right. Now, let's get out of here."

As soon as he opened the front door, they came face-to-face with two rangers and three policemen running towards the cabin in the pouring rain.

"We heard gunshots!" One of them shouted.

"Are you ok?" Another one asked.

"Trust the police to show up just when you need them," Kane muttered to Emilia. To the others, he said, "We're fine. We just need a ride out of here!"

"That was incredibly brave of you, Kane," Elsie said proudly. "you risked your life to rescue Emilia."

"It was the least I could do," he replied.

After they were discovered in front of the cabin, they'd been whisked away by the searchers and rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Both Matt and Hank were then taken to the morgue. Kane did not feel an ounce of pity for either man. Both of them have in their own way put Emilia through hell within the space of 24 hours.

"What did the doctors say about her?" Elsie asked.

"Oh, dear. That's a lot of bone injury to recover from."

"They say she may never walk again..."

Elsie gasped. "Oh... poor girl."

Kane chuckled sadly. "Take it easy, Mother. She's got a 50 - 50 chance of making a complete recovery. She might walk again but they just wanted us to prepare for the worse, just in case." "And her sister?"

"She's showing a lot of improvement. She's officially out of danger and will be moved to a regular ward next week."

"Well, that's some good news."

"How are the kids?"

"Lillian is with them. I was surprised when she offered to stay with them while I came here. She has suddenly developed maternal instincts out of nowhere."

"I guess she's discovering a new side of her again. Being with an idiot like Samuel is enough to kill off all the goodness in you."

"Please, don't mention that rascal's name," Elsie said dismissively. "I always knew there was something odd about their relationship but I didn't realize just how bad it was. I regret forcing him on Lillian." "Well, she's about to regain her freedom soon. That's something to be happy about."

Elsie chuckled. "Jack would have thoroughly enjoyed teasing Samuel about this. Jack never liked him."

"I guess he was wiser than the rest of us."

"I miss him so much," Elsie whispered and dabbed her eyes with her silk handkerchief.

Kane put his arm around her and rubbed her shoulder tenderly. It was the first time she would talk about Jack since he passed away.

Being reminded every day that her youngest child was gone was too much for her to deal with. She preferred to pretend that he had gone on a long trip as he used to do when he was alive.

"You should go back home now, Mother. I'll stay here with Emilia."

"I don't mind staying here with you."

"No. You've been through a lot today. You need to go home and relax. I don't want you to break down from all the stress."

"You're one to talk. Weren't you the one who confronted an armed man in a secluded cabin in the woods?"

"You make me sound like a superhero."

"Aren't you?"

"I don't think so. Just a man in love doing what he had to do."

Elsie cupped her son's face with her palm and patted his cheek lovingly as she used to do when he was a boy.

"I'll never stop being proud of you, Kane. You've been the best son a mother could ask for."

Kane swallowed the lump in his throat as he listened to his mother lavishing compliments on him. Elsie wasn't a very emotional person and that was why it meant a lot to him whenever she spoke from the heart like this. "You have been braver than you give yourself credit for," he said softly. "and I may not say it enough, but I am proud of you too and I love you."

Tears rolled down her face and Kane embraced her. "I love you, son. Emilia is lucky to have you."
